    Fabrication and characterization of TiO2 nanoparticles conjugated luminescence upconversion nanoparticles

    TiO2 nanoparticles conjugated luminescence upconversion (TiO2-UC) nanocomposites have been fabricated by covalently linking of carboxyl-functionalized TiO2 and amino-functionalized NaYF4:Yb3+,Er3+,Ce3+ upconversion nanoparticles (UCNP) in the presence of N,N'–dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC) /4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) coupling reagents. The carboxyl-functionalized TiO2 nanoparticles and amino-functionalized UCNPs have been synthesized by hydrothermal method with 5±2 and 55±10 nm in diameter, respectively. In the synthesis of UCNPs, the percentage of stabilizing agent (polyethyleneimine, PEI), the mole ratios of NaCl/NH4F and the co-doping ratio of Ce3+ ion have been found to be a significant effect on their size and morphology. Size, morphology, conjugation as well as photo-physical properties of all synthesized nanomaterials have been characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and fluorescence spectroscopy. UCNPs and TiO2-UCnanocomposites exhibit strong green luminescence at room temperature under 980 nm excitation leaded the emissions at 440, 520, 540 and 658 nm, representing 2H9/2 → 4 I15/2, 2H11/2→4 I15/2, 4 S3/2→4 I15/2 and 4 F→4 I15/2 transitions, respectively.     Compact finite difference schemes for soybean hydration model as Stefan problem

    In this paper, a study of numerical solutions of a nonlinear soybean hydration model is considered as a Stefan problem is presented. For this purpose, fourth and sixth order compact finite difference schemes are employed in space for the distribution of moisture and velocity of radius and calculated equilibrium times and CPU times. To show efficiency of the methods, numerical experiments have been done and numerical stability has been proven. It is noted that the present methods have more accurate solution with minimal computational effort (CPU time) for soybean hydration model, by comparisons of result in the literature which is validated experimental data

    Effect of foot anthropometric measurements on postural stability

    Aim: To examine the effect of foot anthropometric measurements and body sizes of young male adults with normal posture on balance. Methods: In this study, the effect of body size and foot anthropometric measurements of 112 young male adults with normal posture on balance was investigated. The foot and body parameters of the cases were measured. The static and the dynamic balance tests were evaluated according to the dominant foot in each case. The parameters that affected balance were determined and the variables were taken to the model. In addition, the significance levels that defined the effects of the properties examined in relation with the balance were also calculated. Results: When the findings were evaluated, it was determined that the effect of the foot parameters other than the foot length, and the effect of 15 body parameters other than the biiliac diameter, trochanteric height, and right upper extremity length on balance performance was significant. The balance test performance was predicted with success ranging from 7.8% to 43% with the parameters included in the model. Conclusion: In this study, the fact that the relation between the foot anthropometric and body dimensions and functional balance performances of young male adults was found to be significant shows that this relation must be considered in the creation of a normative database on balance, and in clinical studies that will be conducted on the subject

      Introduction: Although prolonged small intestine and colonic transit time has been demonstrated in acromegaly patients, the influence of acromegaly on oesophagus motility and the pathological mechanisms involved are still not clarified. We aimed to investigate manometric measurements to ascertain whether oesophagus motility is affected in active acromegaly patients. Material and methods: The study was performed in an institutional referral centre at a tertiary care hospital. Twenty-three acromegaly patients (mean age 43.2 ± 13.2 years) and 25 sex- and age-matched healthy control subjects (mean age 48.6 ± 7.9 years) were recruited to a case-control study. Oesophageal manometry was performed using MMS (Medical Measurement Systems, Netherlands) Solar GI — Air Charged Intelligent Gastrointestinal Conventional Manometry. Results: In manometric measurements the lower oesophageal sphincter pressure was 18 ± 7 mmHg in acromegaly patients and 15.6 ± 4.4 mm Hg in controls, and there was no significant difference (p = 0.17). The percentage of relaxation was 64.8% and 81.8%, respectively, and it was significantly lower in acromegaly patients than in controls (p < 0.001). Additionally, the duration of relaxation was found to be 4 ± 1.9 seconds and 5 ± 1.7 seconds in patients and controls, respectively (p = 0.049). Conclusions: Our study has demonstrated a significant reduction in the percentage and duration of lower oesophageal sphincter relaxation in oesophagus motility even in acromegaly patients without any gastrointestinal symptoms. Further clinical and pathophysiological studies are required to clarify the underlying mechanisms of gastrointestinal motility disorders in acromegaly. (Endokrynol Pol 2015; 66 (4): 308–312)    Wstęp: Chociaż u pacjentów chorujących na akromegalię wykazano wydłużony czas pasażu żołądkowo-jelitowego, wpływ akromegalii na motorykę przełyku oraz powiązane z tym mechanizmy patologiczne nadal nie są wyjaśnione. Celem pracy było zbadanie za pomocą pomiarów manometrycznych czy motoryka przełyku ulega zmianie u pacjentów z aktywną akromegalią. Materiał i metody: Badanie przeprowadzono w ośrodku referencyjnym w szpitalu specjalistycznym. Dwudziestu trzech pacjentów chorujących na akromegalię (śr. wiek 43,2 ± 13,2 lat) oraz w grupie kontrolnej 25 osób dopasowanych pod względem płci i wieku (śr. wiek 48,6 ± 7,9 lat) zostało zakwalifikowanych do badania kliniczno-kontrolnego. Manometrię przełyku wykonano za pomocą MMS (Medical Measurement Systems, Holandia) Solar GI. Wyniki: W pomiarach manometrycznych u pacjentów ciepiących na akromegalię, ciśnienie dolnego zwieracza przełyku wynosiło 18 ± 7 mm Hg, a u osób kontrolnych wynosiło ono 15,6 ± 4,4 mm Hg, nie było więc znaczącej różnicy między grupami (p = 0,17). odsetek rozkurczu wynosił odpowiednio 64,8% i 81,8% i był on znacznie niższy u pacjentów z akromegalią (p < 0,001). Ponadto, długość trwania rozkurczu wynosiła odpowiednio 4 ± 1,9 sek. i 5 ± 1,7 sek. (p = 0,049). Wnioski: Niniejsze badanie wykazało znaczną redukcję odsetka i czasu trwania rozkurczu dolnego zwieracza przełyku w motoryce przełyku, nawet u pacjentów z akromegalią bez objawów żołądkowo-jelitowych. Należy przeprowadzić dalsze badania kliniczne i patofizjologiczne, aby wyjaśnić mechanizmy leżące u podłoża zaburzeń motoryki żołądkowo-jelitowej u pacjentów chorujących na akromegalię.     Evaluation of the Sterility of PRP Obtained with Multi-bag System (PRPBAG®)

    Introduction:The aim of this study is demonstrating the sterility of PRPBAG®, a multi-bag completely closed PRP preparation system different than PRP kits in the market and determining preservability of the sterility of PRP produced with PRPBAG® up to 5 days similar to other platelet products.Methods:We recruited 60 participants for increased statistical significance. 150 mL of whole blood was collected in specially produced PRPBAG®. A double-spin preparation method was used for the samples with a refrigerated centrifuge specially manufactured for PRPBAG®. We started centrifugation within 1 h after collecting blood. In the 1st spin of the centrifugation, whole blood was centrifuged. Erythrocytes precipitated in the first bag because of blood component density, and the supernatant plasma was transferred into the second bag using a manual plasma extractor. The third bag was empty after the first spin. We used a hose-closing device to separate the first bag, which contained erythrocytes, from the other bags. In the second spin of centrifugation, the plasma was centrifuged.Results:PRP product with high-quality was collected in the second bag. We have considered the European guidelines for the preparation, use, and quality assurance of blood components during the whole process. 1 cc of PRP was added into separate pediatric blood culture bottles on days 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. These samples were sent to the microbiology laboratory and incubated for 5 days. After this incubation period, the blood culture bottles that did not give positive signals were reported as sterile.Conclusion:Currently, PRP is used immediately after preparation. Our study demonstrates that PRP prepared with a closed triple blood bag system PRPBAG® may be used for 5 days if agitated at room temperature. There was not any bacterial growth in any sample after 5 days

    Araştırmada 2007 UNESCO Dünya Mevlana yılı için hazırlanan grafik tasarım ürünleri incelenmiştir. Bu araştırmanın evreni 2007 Dünya Mevlana Yılı tanıtımı için hazırlanan tüm görsel reklam uygulamaları olmuştur. Örneklemi ise 2007 Dünya Mevlana Yılı için Konya'da yayınlanan ve Konya'dan ulaşılabilen basılı grafik tasarım ürünleridir. Bu araştırma kapsamında 10 adet grafik tasarım ürünü, kataloglama yöntemiyle grafiksel açıdan incelenmiştir. Araştırma sonucunda, 1. 2007 UNESCO Dünya Mevlana yılı etkinlikleri için hazırlanan grafik tasarım ürünlerinin, profesyonel açıdan yetersiz olduğu düşünülen grafik tasarımcıları tarafından tasarlandığı anlaşılmıştır. 2. Mevlana Celaleddin-i Rumi'nin 800. doğum yıl dönümü anısına 2007 UNESCO Dünya Mevlana ve Hoşgörü Yılı olarak seçilmesi Türkiye'nin ve Mevlana'nın doğru anlaşılması, dünya çapında tanıtılması açısından kaçırılmayacak bir fırsat olmuş, ancak grafik tasarım açısından bu fırsat iyi değerlendirilememiştir. 3. İncelediğimiz grafik tasarımlarda, tasarım elemanlarının ve ilkelerinin genel olarak sıradan bir şekilde kullanıldığı gözlenmiştir. Çoğunlukla yaratıcılık göz ardı edilmiştir. 4. Grafik tasarım ürünlerinde, tasarım sorununun çözülemediği ve tasarım sorununun içerikten yoksun, görüntü veya süslemeyle giderilmeye çalışıldığı görülmüştür. 5. Çalışmalarda, tasarım öğelerinin ve ilkelerinin etkili biçimde kullanılması tasarımın başarılı olduğunu göstermektedir. Araştırmanın son kısmında, çıkan sonuç ve sorunlara dayalı olarak ortaya konulan önerilere yer verilmiştir.In the survey, the graphic design products prepared for 2007 UNESCO World Mevlana year have been analyzed. The universe of this survey has been all visual advertisement applications prepared for the promotion of 2007 World Mevlana Year. Sampling of the survey has been the graphic design products published in Konya for 2007 World Mevlana Year and that can be reached in Konya. 10 graphic design products have been catalogued and analyzed graphically in this survey. As a result of the survey, 1. It was found out that graphic design products, prepared for the events of 2007 UNESCO World Mevlana year, were designed by graphic designers, who were considered to be professionally insufficient. 2. Selection of year 2007 as UNESCO World Mevlana and Tolerance year in memory of Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi was an opportunity that should not be missed to ensure Turkey and Mevlana to be understood right and promoted throughout the world. However, this opportunity couldn't be benefited from good enough as regards graphic design. 3. In the graphic designs we have analyzed, it was observed that design elements and principles were used in an ordinary manner in general. Mostly, creativity was ignored by desinger. 4. It was seen that in graphic design products, the design problem was not solved and it was tried to be solved by images or ornaments that lacked content. 5. In the studies, effective use of the design elements and principles indicates that the design is successful. In the final section of the survey, the suggestions that were put forward based on the obtained results and problems were included
