The present study investigated the effects of a phytoandrogen, androstenedione, on growth, body composition, and survival in African catfish, Clarias gariepinus. Three concentrations (25, 50, and 75 mg/kg feed) were administered for 120 days. Survival of treated groups did not sig- nificantly differ from the control and ranged 94.44-97.78%. A significantly higher weight gain was obtained in the 50 and 75 mg/kg diets. The fish fed these diets also had significantly better food conversion and protein efficiency ratios. Apparent net protein utilization was better in treated groups than in the control. The protein and lipid contents of the carcass of treated fish were sig- nificantly higher than in the control, with the highest contents in the 50 mg/kg treatment. The highest ash content was in the 25 mg/kg treatment. In overall parameters, 50 mg androstene- dione per kg diet was the optimal concentration

A preliminary study was conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary supplementation of the Pelargonium sidoides extract on African catfish, Clarias gariepinus growth performance, feed efficiency and body composition. The catfish (mean body weight 1.09±0.32 g) were fed with experimental diets prepared by using supplementation of P. sidoides extract (0, 5 and 10 ml 100 g-1) for 90 days. Growth rate significantly increased in catfish fed with P. sidoides extract-supplemented diets in comparison with the control groups (P<0.05). Specific growth rate (SGR) ranged from 2.29 ± 0.05 (control) to 2.54 ± 0.21 (5 ml P. sidoides extract 100 g-1 diet). Feed conversion ratio (FCR) and protein efficiency ratio (PER) were also significantly improved in group fed diet with 10 ml 100 g-1 P. sidoides extract than that with control groups (P<0.05). These results demonstrate that P. sidoides extract may be used as a potential growth promoter in catfish culture

The effects of graded dietary supplementation of Pelargonium sidoides extract on growth performance, feed utilization, and body composition in common carp, Cyprinus carpio, were preliminarily evaluated. Fish (0.67±0.05 g) were fed experimental diets containing 0, 1, 3, or 5 ml/100 g P. sidoides extract for 90 days. Growth rate significantly (p<0.05) increased in carp fed supplemented diets. The specific growth rate ranged from 2.87±0.09 in the control to 3.41±0.11 in fish fed the diet supplemented with 5 ml P. sidoides. The feed conversion ratio, protein efficiency ratio, and apparent net protein utilization were significantly better in groups fed diets with 3 or 5 ml P. sidoides extract than in the control or 1 ml group. The highest protein content (19.65%) was obtained with 3 ml supplementation. The present study shows that P. sidoides extract has a positive effect on carp growth and feed utilization with no apparent effects on health status

A preliminary study was conducted to evaluate the effect of the Rosemary extract (Rosemaria officinalis) on growth performance, feed utilization and body composition of the African catfish (Clarias gariepinus, Burchell, 1822). Fish with an average body weight of 10.59±0.31 g were fed with different concentrations (0, 0.25 and 0.5 %) of Rosemary extract at dietary for 60 days. At the end of experiment, the highest values of weight gain, specific growth rate and food conversion rate were 17.23±0.08 g, 1.93±0.07 and 1.16±0.06 at 0.5% Rosemary extract dosage group respectively. The highest survival rates were 100% at 0.25% Rosemary extract dosage groups. No significant differences were shown in whole body protein and lipid content among the dietary treatments. These results indicate that treatment of Rosemary extract has positive effect on growth in African catfish with no apparent effects on health status

Heavy metal contamination in the coastal and marine ecosystems is becoming a serious risk to aquatic organisms and humans. This study reports the effects, including genetic damage, of accumulations of trace metals on Liza aurata, which is used as a bio-indicator species, in the Payas coast of Iskenderun Bay, north-eastern Mediterranean by COMET Assay. L. aurata were seasonally collected from a sampling site and a reference site for one year. Physicochemical parameters in water and trace metals in the tissues of fish collected from these sites were determined by electrochemical techniques. High DNA damage frequency in L. aurata was observed along the Payas coast of Iskenderun Bay compared to the reference site because of pollutants. The detected high levels of Cd, Pb, Fe and Cu accumulation in L. aurata exceed the maximum levels allowed by the national and international limit values. Significant positive correlations between Cd, Pb, Hg, Cr, Fe, Zn, and Cu accumulations and DNA damage parameters were observed in the present study. Additionally, we first reported the successful use of the electrochemical technique in the determination of trace metal concentrations in mullet. Moreover, L. aurata constitutes a key tool as a sentinel organism for biomonitoring of coastal ecosystems. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.https://doi.org/10.1007/s10646-022-02591-

In this study, the cellular localisation and distribution of BVD viral antigens in genital system tissues were investigated in 65 non-pregnant dairy cows and in 65 bulls. For this study genital system tissue samples, taken from slaughtered bulls with no pathological lesions and from females having reproductive problems, were marked using the immunoperoxidase method on their paraffin sections. BVD viral antigens were determined in 15 of the 65 non-pregnant dairy cows (consistent with cell culture results) using the indirect immunoperoxidase method. BVD viral antigens were present in macrophage-like cells in the stroma of the ovaries and uterus. No BVD viral antigens were observed in the samples of testicles, epididymis, vesicula seminalis, or prostate in the male animals. In all animals, including BVDV-positive ones, no pathologic lesions were observed, except periodically non-specific subepithelial or stromal mononuclear cell infiltrations. Most of these cells were seen to be formed by lymphocytes and macrophages.Istražena je lokalizacija i proširenost antigena virusa virusnog proljeva goveda u tkivima spolnog sustava 65 negravidnih mliječnih krava i 65 bikova. Virusni antigeni nisu dokazani u uzorcima tkiva testisa, epididimisa, sjemene vrećice i prostate bikova. U pretraženih životinja, uključujući i one pozitivne na virus, nisu zabilježene patološke promjene, osim povremenih nespecifičnih subepitelijalnih ili stromalnih mononuklearnih infiltracija limfocitima i makrofagima

WOS: 000393291900012OBJECTIVE: Cinacalcet reduces parathyroid hormone levels by increasing the sensitivity of the parathyroid gland to calcium. in this study, we firstly aimed to evaluate the efficacy of cinacalcet in Turkish hemodialysis patients. MATERIAL and METHODS: 4483 hemodialysis patients were screened and 469 patients who had used cinacalcet were included in the study. the patients were divided into 4 groups according to drug usage durations (Group 1: 3 months, Group 2: 6 months, Group 3: 9 months and Group 4: 12 months). the patients' Parathormone, Ca, P and CaxP levels at the 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th months were compared to the start of treatment and previous months. RESULTS: the levels of Parathormone, Ca, P and CaxP significantly decreased compared to their initial levels in all groups (from 1412 pg/ml to 1222 pg/mL for Parathormone, p< 0,001) in the 3rd month. However, this reduction was not continued in the subsequent months (Parathormone: 1381 pg/ml for the 12th month). CONCLUSION: Cinacalcet may not provide adequate benefit in control of hyperparathyroidism in Turkish hemodialysis patient population

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of red clover on growth, body composition, and survival of tilapia, Oreochromis aureus. Three concentrations of dietary red clover (50, 100, 200 mg/kg) were tested for 90 days. The growth rate was significantly better in fish fed 100 mg red clover/kg feed than in the control that contained no red clover (p<0.01). The specific growth rate ranged from 3.79±0.10 in the 200 mg/kg red clover treatment to 4.41±0.05 in the 100 mg/kg treatment. The food conversion ratio, protein efficiency ratio, and apparent net protein utilization were significantly highest in groups fed the 100 mg red clover/kg diet (p<0.01). Survival in groups fed red clover did not differ from that of the control. The highest protein content (19.74%) was obtained in the 100 mg/kg group and it was significantly higher than in all other groups (p<0.05). Moisture and ash contents did not differ among treatments. Lipid content was not significantly affected by red clover dosage. The findings of the present study suggest that 100 mg red clover/kg feed improves the growth rate and feed utilization of tilapia
