    Relativistically invariant quantum information

    Get PDF
We show that quantum information can be encoded into entangled states of multiple indistinguishable particles in such a way that any inertial observer can prepare, manipulate, or measure the encoded state independent of their Lorentz reference frame. Such relativistically invariant quantum information is free of the difficulties associated with encoding into spin or other degrees of freedom in a relativistic context.Comment: 5 pages, published versio

Uncertainties of predictions from parton distribution functions II: the Hessian method

    Get PDF
We develop a general method to quantify the uncertainties of parton distribution functions and their physical predictions, with emphasis on incorporating all relevant experimental constraints. The method uses the Hessian formalism to study an effective chi-squared function that quantifies the fit between theory and experiment. Key ingredients are a recently developed iterative procedure to calculate the Hessian matrix in the difficult global analysis environment, and the use of parameters defined as components along appropriately normalized eigenvectors. The result is a set of 2d Eigenvector Basis parton distributions (where d=16 is the number of parton parameters) from which the uncertainty on any physical quantity due to the uncertainty in parton distributions can be calculated. We illustrate the method by applying it to calculate uncertainties of gluon and quark distribution functions, W boson rapidity distributions, and the correlation between W and Z production cross sections.Comment: 30 pages, Latex. Quantum Number Density Asymmetries Within QCD Jets Correlated With Lambda Polarization

The observation of jets in a variety of hard-scattering processes has allowed the quantitative study of perturbative quantum chromodynamics (PQCD) by comparing detailed theoretical predictions with a wide range of experimental data. This paper examines how some important, nonperturbative, facets of QCD involving the internal dynamical structure of jets can be studied by measuring the spin orientation of Lambda particles produced in these jets. The measurement of the transverse polarization for an individual Lambda within a QCD jet permits the definition of spin-directed asymmetries in local quantum number densities in rapidity space (such as charge, strangeness and baryon number densities) involving neighboring hadrons in the jet. These asymmetries can only be generated by soft, nonperturbative dynamical mechanisms and such measurements can provide insight not otherwise accessible into the color rearrangement that occurs during the hadronization stage of the fragmentation process.Comment: The replacement manuscript contains a new abstract, five pages of additional material and a revised version of Fig.

Exponential suppression of thermal conductance using coherent transport and heterostructures

We consider coherent thermal conductance through multilayer photonic crystal heterostructures, consisting of a series of cascaded non-identical photonic crystals. We show that thermal conductance can be suppressed exponentially with the number of cascaded crystals, due to the mismatch between photonic bands of all crystals in the heterostructure.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure

    Positivity of Quasilocal Mass

Motivated by the important work of Brown adn York on quasilocal energy, we propose definitions of quasilocal energy and momentum surface energy of a spacelike 2-surface with positive intrinsic curvature in a spacetime. We show that the quasilocal energy of the boundary of a compact spacelike hypersurface which satisfies the local energy condition is strictly positive unless the spacetime is flat along the spacelike hypersurface.Comment: 4 pages; final published versio

Topological String Partition Functions as Polynomials

We investigate the structure of the higher genus topological string amplitudes on the quintic hypersurface. It is shown that the partition functions of the higher genus than one can be expressed as polynomials of five generators. We also compute the explicit polynomial forms of the partition functions for genus 2, 3, and 4. Moreover, some coefficients are written down for all genus.Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures. v2:typos correcte

Knowledge-Related Barriers to Communication and Coordination in Disaster Response: Adelphi Study

    Get PDF
Multi-organizational ad hoc knowledge networks have the potential to improve the effectiveness of disaster response and recovery by helping organizations share information, coordinate their activities and leverage participants\u27 expertise. This paper reports an exploratory study to identify the major barriers to effectiveness in ad hoc knowledge networks in disaster response. The research methodology is a multi-panel Delphi survey, with each panel comprised of experienced emergency response professionals from different types of response organizations (e.g., fire fighters, EOC (emergency operations center) directors, law enforcement professionals). The study is currently in progress, and results from the first two panels are reported
