RESILIENCE IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE LEARNING: A STUDY ON PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS’ LANGUAGE LEARNING EXPERIENCES

    Get PDF
Investigating pre-service teachers’ language learning experiences is essential as they have an impact on their learning during their departmental studies and their future teaching practices. Given the fact that there is a growing call for the development of resilience in teacher education programs, this qualitative study aims at exploring what resources pre-service English language teachers have relied on to overcome challenges and obstacles to learning English as a foreign language. To achieve this aim, data were obtained from 23 pre-service teachers enrolled in English Language Teaching program at a university in Istanbul, Turkey in the form of a reflective writing activity. To triangulate data, a focus group interview was carried out with five of the participating pre-service teachers. Data were analyzed using the thematic analysis approach (Braun & Clarke, 2006). Findings revealed that pre-service teachers dealt with a variety of obstacles in their English language learning histories such as ineffective methodologies used by teachers, anxiety caused by examinations, obstacles in language skills especially speaking, and language barriers while staying in English-speaking countries. The pre-service teachers mentioned that they demonstrated agency in the process of overcoming these obstacles and their resilience included both personal protective factors and social/environmental protective factors. Keywords: resilience, positive psychology, teacher education, foreign language learnin

Generalized Kudryashov Method for Time-Fractional Differential Equations

    Get PDF
In this study, the generalized Kudryashov method (GKM) is handled to find exact solutions of time-fractional Burgers equation, time-fractional Cahn-Hilliard equation, and time-fractional generalized third-order KdV equation. These time-fractional equations can be turned into another nonlinear ordinary differantial equation by travelling wave transformation. Then, GKM has been implemented to attain exact solutions of time-fractional Burgers equation, time-fractional Cahn-Hilliard equation, and time-fractional generalized third-order KdV equation. Also, some new hyperbolic function solutions have been obtained by using this method. It can be said that this method is a generalized form of the classical Kudryashov method

Evaluation of Trastuzumab-induced early cardiac dysfunction using two-dimensional Strain Echocardiography

Abstract Aim: Trastuzumab, a chemotherapeutic agent used in the treatment of breast cancer. has been shown to induce subclinical left ventricular (LV) dysfunction during a three to six month period as evidenced by strain echocardiographic examination without any change occurring in the ejection fraction of LV. The present study evaluated the presence of subclinical LV dysfunction using strain echocardiography 1 day and 7 days after the initiation of trastuzumab therapy. Material and methods: The patients with breast cancer receiving adjuvant trastuzumab therapy underwent 2-dimensional, tissue Doppler, and strain echocardiographic examination at baseline and 1 day and 7 days after therapy. LV global longitudinal strain (GLS), global circumferential strain (GCS) values, and other echocardiographic parameters were calculated. Results: A total of 40 females, mean age 50±10 years, were evaluated. Of these patients, 97% received anthracycline and 73% received radiotherapy before the initiation of trastuzumab therapy. No change was observed in any of the echocardiographic parameters 1 day after the initiation of trastuzumab therapy (p>0.05). The LV ejection fraction, tissue Doppler parameters, and GCS values did not show any changes 7 days after the initiation of therapy, whereas significant decreases were observed in GLS value (19.2±4.0% vs. 17.2±3.4, p=0.001) and systolic annular velocity of the lateral LV wall (S' velocity) (10.5±3.2 vs. 8.6±2.2, p=0.002). Conclusion: Trastuzumab therapy is associated with subclinical LV dysfunction as early as 7 days after initiation of the therapy as evidenced by the decreases in GLS value of LV and systolic annular velocity of the lateral LV wall

Sumudu Transform Method for Analytical Solutions of Fractional Type Ordinary Differential Equations

    Get PDF
We make use of the so-called Sumudu transform method (STM), a type of ordinary differential equations with both integer and noninteger order derivative. Firstly, we give the properties of STM, and then we directly apply it to fractional type ordinary differential equations, both homogeneous and inhomogeneous ones. We obtain exact solutions of fractional type ordinary differential equations, both homogeneous and inhomogeneous, by using STM. We present some numerical simulations of the obtained solutions and exhibit two-dimensional graphics by means of Mathematica tools. The method used here is highly efficient, powerful, and confidential tool in terms of finding exact solutions

A global experience-sampling method study of well-being during times of crisis : The CoCo project

    Get PDF
We present a global experience-sampling method (ESM) study aimed at describing, predicting, and understanding individual differences in well-being during times of crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic. This international ESM study is a collaborative effort of over 60 interdisciplinary researchers from around the world in the “Coping with Corona” (CoCo) project. The study comprises trait-, state-, and daily-level data of 7490 participants from over 20 countries (total ESM measurements = 207,263; total daily measurements = 73,295) collected between October 2021 and August 2022. We provide a brief overview of the theoretical background and aims of the study, present the applied methods (including a description of the study design, data collection procedures, data cleaning, and final sample), and discuss exemplary research questions to which these data can be applied. We end by inviting collaborations on the CoCo dataset
