A research report submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Commerce in Development Theory and Policy to the Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 2017Anglo American Corporation also known as Anglo was founded by Ernest Oppenheimer in 1917 by consolidating smaller mining companies to better exploit diamonds and gold deposits in South Africa. From its early days, Anglo played a critical role in the development of the South African economy. At its height, it owned manufacturing companies, financial houses, mining companies, industrial companies and car assembly companies. In 1999, Anglo transferred its primary stock to the London Stock Exchange (LSE) four years after the end of apartheid. Following its move to London, Anglo sold its significant assets in South Africa at the same time purchasing more assets abroad. This paper focuses on Anglo’s reasons to shift its primary stock from the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) to the London stock exchange.MT 201

This research sought to access the effects of betel nut chewing on glycaemic control amongst patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Papua New Guinea. Whilst there were no observable acute effects of betel nut chewing on capillary blood glucose levels, a negative association was observed between betel nut use and glycaemic control in patients with long-term diabetes. Furthermore, betel nut consumption had a negative association with body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference

This paper analyzes the performance and practical implementation of fuzzy-neural networks for the autonomous motion of mobile robots. The designed fuzzy-neural controller is a refined version of a conventional fuzzy controller, and was trained to optimize a given cost function minimizing positioning error. It was found that the mobile robot with fuzzyneural controller presents good positioning and tracking performance for different types of desired trajectories. It was verified by computer simulation as well as experimentally using a laboratory-scale car-like robot model

An evaluation of patients’ adherence with hypoglycemic medications among Papua New Guineans with Type 2 Diabetes: Influencing factors

    Get PDF
Purpose: The aims of this study were to evaluate the extent of adherence to hypoglycemic medications, assess the relationship between adherence and glycemic control, and evaluate factors affecting adherence. Research design and methods: This was a cross-sectional study of patients with established type 2 diabetes attending the Port Moresby General Hospital Diabetes Clinic. Face-to-face interviews were conducted using a questionnaire designed for the study and data were collected concerning the 3 months prior to interview. The questionnaire covered demographic details, lifestyle, biochemical and physical measurements, and medication management. Glycemic control was investigated among patients adhering to their medications (not missing doses) to different degrees (100%, 95%, 90%, and 80%).Results: Of a total of 356 participants who were prescribed hypoglycemic medications, 59.6% omitted some of their doses. Age appeared to have a significant impact on adherence at some levels of adherence, with those aged >60 years being more likely to be adherent (logistic regression). Those who were 95%–99% and those who were 10% (85.5 mmol/mol). Multiple factors were identified as contributors to nonadherence, with patient-based issues (86.0%) and the health care system (21.7%) being the most common. Conclusion: This study showed a significant level of nonadherence among patients with type 2 diabetes in Papua New Guinea. Nonadherence to medication appeared to be associated with poor glycemic control and was due to a variety of reasons. Future interventions aimed at improving adherence will need to take these into account
