Depletion induced isotropic-isotropic phase separation in suspensions of rod-like colloids
When non-adsorbing polymers are added to an isotropic suspension of rod-like
colloids, the colloids effectively attract each other via depletion forces. We
performed Monte Carlo simulations to study the phase diagram of such
rod-polymer mixture. The colloidal rods were modelled as hard spherocylinders;
the polymers were described as spheres of the same diameter as the rods. The
polymers may overlap with no energy cost, while overlap of polymers and rods is
forbidden.
Large amounts of depletant cause phase separation of the mixture. We
estimated the phase boundaries of isotropic-isotropic coexistence both, in the
bulk and in confinement. To determine the phase boundaries we applied the grand
canonical ensemble using successive umbrella sampling [J. Chem. Phys. 120,
10925 (2004)], and we performed a finite-size scaling analysis to estimate the
location of the critical point. The results are compared with predictions of
the free volume theory developed by Lekkerkerker and Stroobants [Nuovo Cimento
D 16, 949 (1994)]. We also give estimates for the interfacial tension between
the coexisting isotropic phases and analyse its power-law behaviour on approach
of the critical point
Depletion-induced biaxial nematic states of boardlike particles
With the aim of investigating the stability conditions of biaxial nematic
liquid crystals, we study the effect of adding a non-adsorbing ideal depletant
on the phase behavior of colloidal hard boardlike particles. We take into
account the presence of the depletant by introducing an effective depletion
attraction between a pair of boardlike particles. At fixed depletant fugacity,
the stable liquid crystal phase is determined through a mean-field theory with
restricted orientations. Interestingly, we predict that for slightly elongated
boardlike particles a critical depletant density exists, where the system
undergoes a direct transition from an isotropic liquid to a biaxial nematic
phase. As a consequence, by tuning the depletant density, an easy experimental
control parameter, one can stabilize states of high biaxial nematic order even
when these states are unstable for pure systems of boardlike particles
Plasma levels of nitric oxide related amino acids in demented subjects with Down syndrome are related to neopterin concentrations
Subjects with Down syndrome (DS) have abnormalities in virtually all aspects of the immune system and almost all will be affected with Alzheimer's disease (AD). It is thought that nitric oxide (NO) is involved in the pathophysiology of AD. In the present study, including a total of 401 elderly DS subjects, the spectrum of plasma amino acids and neopterin was investigated and related to development of AD. Concentrations of nearly all amino acids in DS subjects differed significantly from those of healthy controls. Neopterin was increased in DS subjects, especially in dementia. The production of NO as reflected by an increased citrulline/arginine ratio (Cit/Arg ratio) was enhanced during development of clinical dementia. Neopterin concentrations correlated to the Cit/Arg ratio only in the group of prevalent demented subjects (rho = 0.48, P = 0.006). The results of this study are suggestive for an increase in oxidative processes in DS subjects with AD
Polydispersity Effects in Colloid-Polymer Mixtures
We study phase separation and transient gelation in a mixture consisting of
polydisperse colloids and non-adsorbing polymers, where the ratio of the
average size of the polymer to that of the colloid is approximately 0.063.
Unlike what has been reported previously for mixtures with somewhat lower
colloid polydispersity, the addition of polymers does not expand the
fluid-solid coexistence region. Instead, we find a region of fluid-solid
coexistence which has an approximately constant width but an unexpected
re-entrant shape. We detect the presence of a metastable gas-liquid binodal,
which gives rise to two-stepped crystallization kinetics that can be
rationalized as the effect of fractionation. Finally, we find that the
separation into multiple coexisting solid phases at high colloid volume
fractions predicted by equilibrium statistical mechanics is kinetically
suppressed before the system reaches dynamical arrest.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure
Macromolecular theory of solvation and structure in mixtures of colloids and polymers
The structural and thermodynamic properties of mixtures of colloidal spheres
and non-adsorbing polymer chains are studied within a novel general
two-component macromolecular liquid state approach applicable for all size
asymmetry ratios. The dilute limits, when one of the components is at infinite
dilution but the other concentrated, are presented and compared to field theory
and models which replace polymer coils with spheres. Whereas the derived
analytical results compare well, qualitatively and quantitatively, with
mean-field scaling laws where available, important differences from ``effective
sphere'' approaches are found for large polymer sizes or semi-dilute

Avolition in a patient with hypogonadism
Background and Objectives: Testosterone deficiency has been implicated in the etiology of depression although there is an ongoing debate on the nature of this association. There is a paucity of data about the psychological impact of hypogonadism in genetic disorders associated with testosterone deficiency. Methods:A 57-year-old male is described who was referred for treatment resistant depression. His history showed infertility and lowered testosterone. A selective literature review is given to clarify the patient's clinical condition. Results: Cytogenetic analysis demonstrated a Robertsonian translocation between chromosomes 13 and 14 that accounted for his infertility. The psychopathological picture did not meet the criteria for a major depressive disorder but was characterized by symptoms of apathy or avolition. These symptoms were most probably aggravated by previous long lasting treatment with antidepressants. Conclusions: Testosterone deficiency may be related to motivational deficits that should not be misunderstood for depressive illness. Apathy is probably an underestimated side effect of antidepressants

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome during clozapine treatment
Objective: To assess the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in inpatients with psychotic disorders treated with clozapine for at least one year.
Design: Chronically admitted patients were screened on the use of
clozapine and the presence of metabolic side effects.
Methods: The Third Adult Treatment Panel was used tot assess metabolic syndrome. In addition, patient variables, dosage and plasma concentration of clozapine were recorded.
Results: Included were 62 patients with a most prevalent diagnosis of schizophrenia. Mean duration of treatment with clozapine was 9.2 years. Metabolic syndrome was present in 60% of the patients and more frequent in cases with comedication of
mood stabilizers.
Conclusion: Metabolic syndrome is highly prevalent among patients treated with clozapine for psychotic disorders. Additional
factors in the emergence of metabolic syndrome are: unhealthy
life style, inactivity and comedication
Quantifying the tuneable interactions between colloid supported lipid bilayers
Colloid supported lipid bilayers (CSLBs) are formed via the rupture and fusion of lipid vesicles to coat spherical colloidal particles. CSLBs are an emerging vector for the controlled self-assembly of colloids due to the ability to include additives into the bilayer, which influence the (a)specific interactions between particles. To evaluate the specificity of CSLB assembly, first a fundamental study on the tunability of the colloidal interaction and resulting colloidal stability of CSLBs without specific interactions is reported here. It was found that both fluid and gel CSLBs showed significant clustering and attraction, while the addition of steric stabilizers induced a profound increase in stability. The interactions were rendered attractive again by the introduction of depletion forces via the addition of free non-adsorbing polymers. The compositions of fluid and gel CSLBs with 5% membrane stabiliser were concluded to be optimal for further studies where both colloidal stability, and contrasting membrane fluidity are required. These experimental findings were confirmed semi-quantitatively by predictions using numerical self-consistent mean-field theory lattice computations
Isotropic-nematic phase transition in suspensions of filamentous virus and the neutral polymer Dextran
We present an experimental study of the isotropic-nematic phase transition in
an aqueous mixture of charged semi-flexible rods (fd virus) and neutral polymer
(Dextran). A complete phase diagram is measured as a function of ionic strength
and polymer molecular weight. At high ionic strength we find that adding
polymer widens the isotropic-nematic coexistence region with polymers
preferentially partitioning into the isotropic phase, while at low ionic
strength the added polymer has no effect on the phase transition. The nematic
order parameter is determined from birefringence measurements and is found to
be independent of polymer concentration (or equivalently the strength of
attraction). The experimental results are compared with the existing
theoretical predictions for the isotropic-nematic transition in rods with
