    HCV Virus and Lymphoid Neoplasms

    Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is one of the viruses known to cause hepatic cancer. HCV is also believed to be involved in malignant lymphoma. In this paper, we investigated characteristics of malignant lymphoma cases that were anti-HCV antibody (HCV-Ab) positive. We were able to perform pathological examinations on 13 out of 14 HCV-positive cases. Of these, lymphoid tissues of 10 stained positive for HCV-Ab. There was no significant correlation between the degree of HCV staining and the rate of recurrence or resistance to treatment. However, there did appear to be a consistent decrease in the amount of HCV-RNA between pre- and posttreatment among HCV-Ab-positive cases; that is, treatment-resistant cases that exhibited resistance from the first treatment and recurrent cases more frequently had a higher HCV level at treatment termination compared to the pretreatment level. This suggests that the HCV virus either accelerates oncogenesis by direct interaction with B cells or indirectly affects lymphoma prognosis

    Effects of olive oil in SAMP8 mice

    Background : Mediterranean diets have been linked to a reduced risk of cancer, vascular illnesses, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease. Olive oil is the primary fat source in the Mediterranean diet ; however, only a few studies have investigated the effect of olive oil on aging. In the present study, we aimed to determine whether consumption of olive oil significantly influences aging and memory in senescence-accelerated mouse-prone 8 (SAMP8). Methods : SAMP8 and senescence-accelerated mouse resistant 1 (SAMR1) mice were fed either 7% soy oil or 1% olive oil and 6% soy oil during a six-month study period. Reduction in memory in passive avoidance learning was examined after two months from the initiation of the experiment. Results : The weight of organs including the liver, kidney, spleen, and fat tissue changed significantly and memory performance was reduced in SAMP8 than in SAMR1 mice. There were no significant differences in SAMP8 and SAMR1 mice; however, blood triglyceride level decreased significantly in SAMP8 mice fed on olive oil. Conclusions : These results suggest that consuming olive oil may not have a protective role in aging and memory recall, but beneficial effects may be related to improvement in lipid metabolism

    Rituximab is a drug used for the treatment of B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and its range of use has expanded to the treatment of collagen diseases such as idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura and rheumatoid arthritis. One serious complication of rituximab use is the reactivation of dormant hepatitis B virus, and prevention of this phenomenon has become an urgent issue.     Around ten percent of most recent Cochrane reviews included outcomes in their literature search strategy and were associated with potentially exaggerated results: A research-on-research study

    [Objectives] To assess the proportion of the recent Cochrane reviews that included outcomes in their literature search strategy, how often they acknowledged these limitations, and how qualitatively different the results of outcomes included and not included in the search strategy were. [Design and Setting] We identified all the Cochrane reviews of the interventions published in 2020 that used a search strategy connecting outcome terms with “AND.” Reviews were defined as acknowledging the limitations of searching for outcomes if they mentioned them in the discussion. We compared the characteristics of outcomes included and not included in the search strategy. [Results] Of the 523 Cochrane reviews published in 2020, 51 (9.8%) included outcomes in their search strategy. Only one review acknowledged it as a limitation. Forty-seven (92%) assessed outcomes not included in the search strategy. Outcomes included in the search strategies tended to include a larger number of studies and show their effects in favor of the intervention. [Conclusions] Around ten percent of the recent Cochrane reviews included outcomes in their search, which may have resulted in more outcomes significantly in favor of the intervention. Reviewers should be more explicit in acknowledging the potential implications of searching for outcomes

    In the presence of extracellular Ca2+, 6,7-dihydro-6,8,8, 10-tetramethyl-8H-pyrano [3, 2-g] chromone-2-carboxylic acid (EAA) had an inhibitory effect on the substance P-induced histamine release from rat peritoneal mast cells. Not only Ca2+ but also Mg2+, Sr2+ and Ba2+ were effective in enhancing the activity of EAA. Marked tachyphylaxis to EAA developed irrespective of the presence or absence of extracellular Ca2+. Cross-tachyphylaxis was observed between EAA and disodium cromoglycate (DSCG). These results indicate that the mode of action of EAA is similar, but not identical, with that of DSCG.</p

    Immunohistochemical studies using anti-human glutathione S-transferase placental form (GST-π) rabbit antibody were carried out to investigate various hepatobiliary diseases in humans. Hepatocytes in fetal and adult liver without disease were negatively or positively stained while intra-or extrahepatic bile duct epithelial cells were positively or strongly positively stained with GST-π. Hepatocytes in regenerated nodules in liver cirrhosis were positively stained. Hepatocellular carcinomas were not strongly positively stained, while cholangiocarcinomas and cancers of the biliary tract were positively or strongly positively stained. These results indicate that GST-π staining is a useful marker for the diagnosis of intra-or extra-hepatic bile duct carcinomas in humans, and that enzyme activity is not phenotypically expressed in hepatocellular carcinomas

    AbstractObjectives. This study sought to assess the endothelial function of long-term coronary artery lesions in patients with Kawasaki disease (KD).Background. The vascular function of the coronary arteries in children with long-term KD remains uncertain. We report our findings of the vascular response of the coronary arteries to intracoronary injection of acetylcholine (ACh) in patients with KD.Methods. A total of 35 patients (25 patients with KD and 10 control subjects) were examined using coronary angiography. Individual arteries were divided into four groups according to the type of the coronary artery lesion: group 1 consisted of 25 sites with regressed aneurysms. These aneurysms had developed in the acute stage but had subsequently regressed and demonstrated normal findings on the follow-up coronary angiogram. Group 2 consisted of 24 sites with persistent aneurysms. Group 3 involved 60 angiographically normal sites in the same patients as those in group 1 or 2. Group 4 consisted of 30 sites in control subjects who had congenital heart disease with normal coronary arteries. During coronary angiography we infused 15 μg of ACh chloride into the coronary artery. The lumen diameters were measured using a cine videodensitometric analyzer to study the distensibility of the coronary artery wall.Results. The mean (±SD) change in diameter was an increase of 11.71 ± 12.34% in group 3 (coronary arteries without lesions in patients with KD) and 12.21 ± 9.71% in the control group, demonstrating marked vasodilation in both groups. In contrast, the changes in the regressed aneurysms of group 1 and in the persistent aneurysms of group 2 were −2.65 ± 12.12% and −0.08 ± 6.51%, respectively, demonstrating no change or mild vasoconstriction. The change in groups 1 and 2 was significantly less than that in group 3 or in the control group. Group 3 showed no significant difference from the control group.Conclusions. These findings suggest that long-term coronary artery lesions, even after aneurysm regression, may have impaired endothelial function. A long-term follow-up study for those patients is essential
