The Role of Vitamin A-Storing Cells (Stellate Cells) in Inflammation and Tumorigenesis

Characteristic localization and distribution of vitamin A-storing cells (stellate cells) were demonstrated as hepatic stellate cells in the hepatic lobule and as subepithelial myofibroblasts in the colonic crypt. The stem cell-stem cell niche is maintained by stellate cells in the periportal area and crypt base. Periportal vitamin A-rich stellate cells decrease in patients with chronic hepatitis C who are habitual smokers. Mice fed a vitamin A-supplemented diet show reduced severity of dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis and development of subsequent colonic neoplasia in a model of the ulcerative colitis-dysplasia-carcinoma sequence, compared with mice fed a vitamin A-deficient diet. Decreased colonic subepithelial myofibroblasts and IgA/IgG-positive cells, and increased CD11c-positive dendritic cells in the colonic mucosa, in the vitamin A-deficient state suggest dysfunction of the stem cell niche at the colonic crypt base and colonic immunity. Accordingly, vitamin A deficiency may worsen inflammation and subsequent tumor development, indicating the possibility that vitamin A supplementation might be effective against chronic inflammation and cancer development

Research on relation between natural frequency and axial stress of round bar with intermediate-supported ends

In order to make a method be useful to measure an axial stress of a member by a natural frequency, we investigated a relation between a natural frequency and an axial stress of a round bar with intermediate-supported ends, the boundary condition of which was one between a fix-supported end and a simply-supported end. To define an intermediate-supported end condition, we adopted a parameter, a ratio of a moment of a force to a deflection angle at the end. It was shown theoretically that the parameter of an intermediate-supported end could be evaluated by one at a support on a continuous beam consisted of 3 spans. The 3-spanned beam has same vibration characteristics of a beam with intermediate-supported ends. We manufactured a test device of a 3-spanned beam by which we could simulate a vibration under various intermediate-supported end conditions. The theoretical relation and experimental results between a natural frequency and an axial stress agreed for the most part

Spectrophotometric Determination of Magnesium after Separation by Adsorption of its Oxinate on Microcrystalline Naphthalene

    Get PDF
A procedure is presented for the spectrophotometric determination of magnesium af,ter separation by adsorption of magnesium oxinate on microcrystalline naphthalene. A water-insoluble oxine chelate produced with magnesium is quantitatively adsorbed from aqueous solution with microcrystalline naphthalene. This chelate has an absorption maximum at 382 nm. The optimum pH range for the adsorption is 8.6- 10.8. The molar absorptivity is 4.1 x 103 l mol-l·cm-l . the sensitivity being 5.9 K 10-3 pg per ㎠ for the absorbance of 0.001. Ten determinations of the sample solution containing 30 pg of magnesium, prepared by the general procedure, gave a mean absorbance of 0.506 with a relative standard deviation of 2.5%. 200 min

The Relationship between the Efficacy of Tonsillectomy and Renal Pathology in the Patients with IgA Nephropathy

Objective. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of tonsillectomy as a treatment for IgA nephropathy in relation to renal pathological findings. Methods. This is a retrospective analysis of 13 patients having IgA nephropathy treated by tonsillectomy. Results. UP/UCre levels decreased from 820.8 to 585.4 one month postsurgery and then showed slight worsening to 637.3 at the most recent follow-up. There was no significant difference in the improvement rate between pathological grades I–III and IV. There was positive correlation between Pre-UP/UCre level and the reduction rate of UP/UCre, which was statistically significant (R = 0.667, R2 = 0.445, and P=0.01). Conclusions. Reduction of UP/UCre at one month postsurgery is considered to be an overall prognostic factor, and tonsillectomy is considered to be an effective therapy for IgA patients regardless of the grade of renal pathology
