Local conductance spectra of itinerant ferromagnetic SrRuO3 through break junction

    Get PDF
We have measured the local differential conductance spectra (dI/dV-V) of an itinerant ferromagnet composed of polycrystalline SrRuO3 using the mechanically controllable break junction technique. Below the material's Curie temperature (T-C = 160 K), characteristic peak or dip conductance spectra are observed. The characteristic energy scale is comparable to the exchange spin splitting energy that is based on ferromagnetic band calculations. Both the peak and dip spectral shapes are explained based on the itinerant ferromagnetic characteristics of SrRuO3 in terms of spin-dependent transmission, which is similar to the giant magnetoresistance mechanism. Variations in the reproductive cycle of Bornean montane tree species along elevational gradients on ultrabasic and non-ultrabasic soils

Although lowland tree species in the ever-wet regions of Southeast Asia are characterized by the supra-annual cycle of reproduction, the reproductive phenology of montane tree species remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the reproductive phenology of montane tree species using litter samples that were collected every 2 weeks from six rainforest sites, consisting of three elevations (1700, 2700, and 3100 m), on Mount Kinabalu, Borneo. At each elevation, one site was on infertile ultrabasic soil and one was on relatively fertile non-ultrabasic soil. We used a composite sample from 10 or 20 litter traps per site and sorted it by species. Therefore, the obtained data captured reproductive phenology in the population of each species rather than in an individual tree. Ten-year time series of flower and fruit litterfall were obtained for 30 and 39 tree species, respectively. Fourier analysis was used to identify the dominant cycle of each time series. The most abundant cycle across species was supra-annual, followed by sub-annual, and annual cycles. Many species at higher elevations showed supra-annual cycles of flower litterfall, whereas species in the 1700 m sites often showed annual or sub-annual cycles regardless of soil types. No systematic differences were found among sites for fruit litterfall. Mechanisms underlying these elevational patterns in reproductive cycle remain unclear but may include more severe El Niño droughts, lower primary productivity, lower soil fertility, and the absence of some sub-annually or annually reproducing families at higher elevations

A survey of leaf phosphorus fractions and leaf economic traits among 12 co-occurring woody species on phosphorus-impoverished soils

Background and Aims: The leaf economic spectrum (LES) is related to dry mass and nutrient investments towards photosynthetic processes and leaf structures, and to the duration of returns on those investments (leaf lifespan, LL). Phosphorus (P) is a key limiting nutrient for plant growth, yet it is unclear how the allocation of leaf P among different functions is coordinated with the LES. We addressed this question among 12 evergreen woody species co-occurring on P-impoverished soils in south-eastern Australia. Methods: Leaf ‘economic’ traits, including LL, leaf mass per area (LMA), light-saturated net photosynthetic rate per mass (Amass), dark respiration rate, P concentration ([Ptotal]), nitrogen concentration, and P resorption, were measured for three pioneer and nine non-pioneer species. Leaf P was separated into five functional fractions: orthophosphate P (Pi), metabolite P (PM), nucleic acid P (PN), lipid P (PL), and residual P (PR; phosphorylated proteins and unidentified compounds that contain P). Results: LL was negatively correlated with Amass and positively correlated with LMA, representing the LES. Pioneers occurred towards the short-LL end of the spectrum and exhibited higher [Ptotal] than non-pioneer species, primarily associated with higher concentrations of Pi, PN and PL. There were no significant correlations between leaf P fractions and LL or LMA, while Amass was positively correlated with the concentration of PR. Conclusions: Allocation of leaf P to different fractions varied substantially among species. This variation was partially associated with the LES, which may provide a mechanism underlying co-occurrence of species with different ecological strategies under P limitation

Macroscopic tribological properties of thick concentrated polymer brush on rough steel under lubrication with ionic liquid

Concentrated polymer brush (CPB) is the polymer film with a structure that possesses greatly extended polymer chains densely grafted to substrate. CPB is known to swell in good solvents, which have high affinity for the polymer. Swollen CPB by a good solvent shows excellent micro-tribological properties such as super lubrication with the extremely low friction coefficient (μ~10-4). However, macro-tribological properties of CPB surface on steel have not been explored sufficiently. In this study, macroscopic tribological properties of a CPB on rough steel were evaluated using a block-on-ring type tribo-tester under lubrication with an ionic liquid. The CPB showed a significant friction reduction effect with the low friction coefficient of 0.005 on macroscale

Electronic structure of Kondo lattice compounds YbNi3X9 (X = Al, Ga) studied by hard x-ray spectroscopy

We have performed hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES) for Yb-based Kondo lattice compounds; an antiferromagnetic heavy-fermion system YbNi3Al9 and a valence fluctuation system YbNi3Ga9. The Yb 3d5/2 spectra of YbNi3Ga9 showed both Yb2+ and Yb3+-derived structures indicating strong valence fluctuation, and the intensity of Yb2+ (Yb3+) structures gradually increased (decreased) on cooling. The Yb 3d5/2 spectra of YbNi3Al9 mostly consisted of Yb3+-derived structures and showed little temperature dependence. The Yb valences of YbNi3Ga9 and YbNi3Al9 at 22 K were evaluated to be 2.43 and 2.97, respectively. Based on the results of the Ni 2p and valence-band HAXPES spectra together with soft x-ray valence-band spectra, we described that the difference of physical properties of YbNi3X9 (X= Al, Ga) is derived from the differences of the 4f-hole level relative to the Fermi level (EF) and Ni 3d density of states at EF. The HAXPES results on the Yb valences were consistent with those obtained by x-ray absorption spectroscopy using the partial fluorescence yield mode and resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy at the Yb L3 edge

Significance of the localization of phosphorus among tissues on a cross-section of leaf lamina of Bornean tree species for phosphorus-use efficiency

    No full text
A greater relative allocation of phosphorus (P) to photosynthetically active cells functions to maintain a rapid photosynthesis under P limitation, and may be a key mechanism of plants to use P efficiently. This mechanism has not been studied in tropical trees despite the productivity of tropical forests often being limited by P. In this study, the spatial distribution of P among tissues on a cross-section of leaf lamina was analysed for 13 tree species from P-limitedsites on Mount Kinabalu, Borneo. Most species showed greater P concentration in palisade mesophyll than in spongy mesophyll and epidermal tissues, suggesting that tropical trees under P limitation localize foliar P in photosynthetic palisade mesophyll
