    How ICTs Raise Manufacturing Performance: Firm-level Evidence in Southeast Asia.

    This paper examines the effects of information and communication technologies (ICTs) on business performance, using firm-level data obtained through a questionnaire survey in four ASEAN countries (Indonesia, The Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam). Sources of information and new technologies exchanged via ICTs by firms are also explored to investigate the mechanism behind ICT adoption. Empirical results verify that the introduction of ICT to reorganize business processes is significantly correlated with business performance, in particular the development of export markets and improvement of production management. ICTs facilitate access to information and technologies accumulated in in-house departments and joint-venture (JV) affiliates of the respondent firms. There are considerable differences between multinational companies (MNCs)/JVs and local firms. MNCs/JVs make use of information and technologies obtainable via ICTs from their own R&D departments, JVs established with local partners and foreign-owned suppliers/customers to improve factory management, mostly for product quality improvement and production cost reduction. In contrast, local firms interconnect their own R&D departments via ICTs to enhance their business performance in broader areas than MNCs/JVs, including the development of export markets.

    Detecting Effective Knowledge Sources in Product Innovation: Evidence from Local Firms and MNCs/JVs in Southeast Asia

    This paper examines the effects of internal and external sources of knowledge on the introduction of new products based on new technologies or information at firms which responded to a questionnaire survey conducted in four Southeast Asian countries. The results confirm that local firms make full use of locally available sources of new technology or information to achieve product innovation. On the other hand, foreign-owned firms depend mainly on internal R&D capacities and also possibly upon cooperation with local universities. These findings highlight the fact that local firms complement their lack of internal resources for product innovation with external knowledge sources. Foreign-owned firms utilize their international production networks to concentrate their resources on innovative activities.

    The Unusual Neotenic System of the Asian Dry Wood Termite, Neotermes koshunensis (Isoptera: Kalotermitidae)

    In most lower termites, colonies are headed by neotenic reproductives of both sexes after the primary reproductives (i.e., the queen and king) are lost. The production of a neotenic sexual is inhibited by the presence of a primary reproductive of the same sex. We found an exception in the caste system of the dry wood termite Neotermes koshunensis (Kalotermitidae). The neotenic caste is exclusively male. Moreover, production of male neotenics is completely inhibited not only by the presence of a king but also by the presence of a queen. Therefore, it is likely to be difficult for N. koshunensis colonies to recover their reproductive pairs

    A 5 kDa protein (SCS23) from the 30 S subunit of the spinach chloroplast ribosome

    AbstractThe proteins of the 30 S ribosomal subunits from spinach chloroplasts were investigated using a radical-free and highly reducing (RFHR) method of two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE). Twenty-three proteins were resolved on the gel down to the smallest protein of 5 kDa. The N-terminal amino acid sequence of the 5 kDa protein showed no homology with that of any other protein stored in databases, and the copy numbers were estimated to be 0.88±0.16 and 0.72±0.04 in the 30 S subunits and the 70 S ribosomes, respectively. The results suggest that the 5 kDa protein, which we have called SCS23, may be an essential ribosomal protein specific to spinach chloroplasts

    Male’s influence on the primary sex ratio bias in Ryukyu drywood termite

    Selfish genetic elements (SGEs) increase their transmission efficiency relative to the rest of the individual genome, which is often deleterious to individual fitness. Theoretical studies have suggested that intragenomic conflict over the sex ratio distortion between SGEs and the rest of the genome should lead to the evolution of sex-determining systems. However, in insects, there are relatively few studies other than those on Dipterans, which makes it difficult to understand the role of SGEs in the evolution of insect sex determination. This is partially due to the difficulties in observing SGEs under field conditions. The effect of SGEs is often masked by the counter-evolution of the resistance genes. Interpopulation cross-breeding experiments are effective to detect the SGEs and their resistance genes. If these populations have different SGEs and resistance genes, cross-breeding experiments reveal their existence by collapsing the evolutionary antagonistic state. The Ryukyu drywood termites Neotermes sugioi, distributed in the Ryukyu Islands, show male-biased sex ratios in pseudergates, nymphs, alates and soldiers both in Okinawa and Ishigaki Islands, but different degrees of bias have been reported between the islands. Male-specific microsatellite alleles have been reported in this species, which allowed us to identify the sex of the eggs and young larvae. In this study, we used the microsatellite locus with male-specific alleles to investigate the primary sex ratio of field colonies on Okinawa and Ishigaki islands and the sex ratio of offspring obtained through cross-breeding experiments between the islands. The primary sex ratios of field colonies were male-biased in Okinawa but not in Ishigaki. Cross-breeding experiments showed that Okinawa males tend to have a male-biased sex ratio in their offspring, but Ishigaki males do not. This result is consistent with the hypothesis that the male bias in this species is caused by SGEs, even though termites are phylogenetically distant from Diptera. Accumulation of knowledge on genetic conflicts in a wide range of taxa might be an important step toward elucidating the mechanisms of diversification of sex determination systems in insects

    Effects of pulsing procedure of interleukin-12 in combination with interleukin-2 on the activation of peripheral blood lymphocytes derived from patients with hepatocellular carcinoma.

    In patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), natural killer (NK) cell activity decreases significantly, and the reduced activity may be associated with the progression of HCC. In this study we evaluated the effects of pulsing with interleukin (IL)-2 and/or IL-12 on the activation of freshly isolated peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) derived from patients with HCC. PBL obtained from 9 HCC patients, 4 liver cirrhosis patients, and 9 normal subjects were cultured in the presence of IL-2 and/or IL-12. After 24 h of incubation, the levels of interferon (IFN)-gamma and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha presented in the supernatants were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The IFN-gamma and TNF-alpha production of PBL pulsed by a combination of IL-2 and IL-12 was significantly higher than those of PBL stimulated by either IL-2 or IL-12 alone. The mRNA encoding perforin, granzyme B, as well as IFN-gamma and TNF-alpha, were markedly enhanced in PBL stimulated with a combination of IL-12 and IL-2. The pulsing procedure of IL-12 in combination with IL-2 resulted in the increase of IFN-gamma and TNF-alpha, and the expression of perforin and granzyme B mRNA in PBL obtained from HCC patients, as well as in those obtained from normal subjects. These results indicate that adoptive immunotherapy based on PBL pulsed with a combination of IL-2 and IL-12 may be a promising adjunctive strategy for HCC treatment.</p

    R&D and non-R&D in the innovation process among firms in ASEAN countries: Based on firm-level survey data

    Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to identify factors promoting innovation in the framework of R&D based on surveys conducted on firms in five ASEAN countries, Indonesia, Laos, Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam. Design/methodology/approach - The analytical method divided sample firms into two categories, namely, “the R&D group” and “non-R&D group.” The analysis attempts to identify which of the internal capabilities, consisting of technology, human factors and organization factors, promote innovation. Ordered probit analysis is employed. Findings - Findings from the estimations indicate that the two groups pursue product innovation differently. The R&D group promotes innovation by cross-functional teams of production, engineering, and marketing and IT use, whereas the non-R&D group promote product innovation by HRD programs for workers, group awards for suggestions or QC, and ISO9000 series. Research limitations/implications - The number of samples related to the non-R&D group is too small to conduct statistical analysis. External linkages played an important role in the authors’ previous studies. The introduction of external linkages into the model may yield different results, though the analysis would become more complex. Practical implications - The results of this paper provide the solid basis of policy to promote innovation and upgrading SMEs in the region. Social implications - Many ASEAN SMEs successfully achieve innovation without owning specified in-house departments or sections to conduct R&D. Originality/value - The features of this paper lie in the original firm-level survey data and rigorous estimation method using ordered probit analysis, which are new to this literature
