Overcoming losses with gain in a negative refractive index metamaterial

On the basis of a full-vectorial three-dimensional Maxwell-Bloch approach we investigate the possibility of using gain to overcome losses in a negative refractive index fishnet metamaterial. We show that appropriate placing of optically pumped laser dyes (gain) into the metamaterial structure results in a frequency band where the nonbianisotropic metamaterial becomes amplifying. In that region both the real and the imaginary part of the effective refractive index become simultaneously negative and the figure of merit diverges at two distinct frequency points.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

ΔΕΝ ΔΙΑΤΙΘΕΤΑΙ ΠΕΡΙΛΗΨΗSwine seasonal infertility reduces the productivity and profitability of a pig farm. The main causes of this condition are elevated environmental temperatures and long photoperiod during the summer season. The aim of this study was to investigate which sperm proteins and parameters are affected during the period of seasonal infertility. Depending on the environmental temperatures, the period from October to June was considered as cold and the period from July to September as warm season. A total of 65 ejaculates from 18 boars were collected over a year. Each semen sample was evaluated for kinetics (Computer Assisted Semen Analyzer), morphology (Sperm Blue stain), viability (Propidium Iodide - Calcein AM stain), mitochondrial membrane potential (Rhodamine 123 – Propidium Iodide stain), membrane integrity and functionality (Hypo-osmotic swelling test) and sperm DNA integrity (Acridine Orange Test). Moreover, selected proteins (HSP90, GPX5, OPN) were detected and quantified. The kinetic parameters VSL, LIN and the midpiece abnormalities were significantly higher in the warm compared to the cold season (p<0.05), while a strong tendency towards higher values for HSP90 and GPX5 was observed in warm compared to cold season (p=0.07and p=0.06, respectively). In conclusion, among the boar sperm characteristics tested in our study, seasonal infertility period negatively affected VSL and LIN kinetics, while GPX5 seminal plasma enzyme and HSP90 sperm surface protein increased their sperm protective effects

Highly Directional Scattering of Terahertz Radiation by Cylinders using Complex-Frequency Waves

In this study we investigate the directional scattering of terahertz radiation by dielectric cylinders, focusing on the enhancement of directionality using incident radiation of complex-frequency. We explore the optimization of the second Kerker condition, which corresponds to backward scattering. At first, by carefully tailoring the electric and magnetic polarizabilities of the cylinders, we successfully achieve significant backward scattering, and then manage to even further improve it by deploying a decaying incoming wave (\textit{complex}-frequency). Additionally, we present preliminary results on the directional scattering of THz radiation by a magneto-optical cylinder, demonstrating the potential of this approach for advanced control over the propagation of THz waves. Our findings contribute to a deeper understanding of THz directional scattering and pave the way for the development of novel THz devices and applications, such as high-resolution imaging, sensing, and communication systems
