Quantum Cryptography in Practice

BBN, Harvard, and Boston University are building the DARPA Quantum Network, the world's first network that delivers end-to-end network security via high-speed Quantum Key Distribution, and testing that Network against sophisticated eavesdropping attacks. The first network link has been up and steadily operational in our laboratory since December 2002. It provides a Virtual Private Network between private enclaves, with user traffic protected by a weak-coherent implementation of quantum cryptography. This prototype is suitable for deployment in metro-size areas via standard telecom (dark) fiber. In this paper, we introduce quantum cryptography, discuss its relation to modern secure networks, and describe its unusual physical layer, its specialized quantum cryptographic protocol suite (quite interesting in its own right), and our extensions to IPsec to integrate it with quantum cryptography.Comment: Preprint of SIGCOMM 2003 pape

Three atmospheric dispersion experiments involving oil fog plumes measured by lidar

The Wave Propagation Lab. participated with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in a series of experiments with the goal of developing and validating dispersion models that perform substantially better that models currently available. The lidar systems deployed and the data processing procedures used in these experiments are briefly described. Highlights are presented of conclusions drawn thus far from the lidar data

Sensing & Thinking with Art - Exploring Imaginative Dialogues in Artistic Practice

Artistic research, through sensory experiences, gives opportunities for new knowledge about the creative process. In this paper, I explore within a performative research paradigm, dialogues and relationships that happen between artist-researcher and materials. In my research, I show that serendipity and flow can be gateways to imaginative dialogues with non-living materials in an artistic practice. Throughout the project, I have been listening and interacting with the phenomenon of imaginative dialogues in several artistic ways. A selection of these encounters are presented and analyzed through relevant theory to illustrate how assemblages of human and non-human actants may interrupt and transform the artistic practice while creating new knowledge and language within the practice

Experiences in the Hot Zone Cols. Nancy and Gerald Jaax Visit the CVM

On April 11, 1997, the College of Veterinary Medicine was host to Cols. Nancy and Gerald Jaax of the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Disease (USAMRIID). Their presentation focused on the purpose of USAMRIID and its role in the 1989 outbreak of the Ebola Reston virus at a monkey quarantine facility in Reston, VA. Gerald and Nancy Jaax are 1972 and 1973 graduates of the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Following graduation, both served as members of the Army Veterinary Corp. Both later transferred to USAMRIID to receive advanced training. Gerald Jaax, now a diplomate of the American College \u27of Laboratory Animal Medicine, was previously director of laboratory animal medicine training at USAMRIID. Nancy Jaax, a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists is currently in charge of pathology training at USAMRIID. They have also served as consultants to the Surgeon General

Department of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine Created

In recent years, many institutions have had to address budgetary and environmental changes that compel the restructuring of programs and departments. It is generally believed that restructuring will create a more efficient program that will be better able to succeed in the future. To that end, the formation of the Department of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine (VDPAM) was announced this fall by the College of Veterinary Medicine. The mission of the newly created VDPAM is to assist veterinarians, their clients, and others responsible for animal health in the detection, characterization, control, and prevention of animal diseases and to provide programs in professional service, education, and research that optimize productivity and animal welfare in the food animal industries while sustaining the environment and assuring animal product safety
