    An inquiry into the determinants of Vietnamese product export

    Export led growth is the model of economic development that Vietnam has been following. While there are a great number of studies on the determinants of aggregate export of Vietnam, there are few that analyze the impacts of different factors on the export of different product groups. This paper aims at filling this gap in research on international trade of Vietnam. The results show that the fast GDP growth of Vietnam, the large population of importing countries, the wide economic gap between Vietnam and the importing countries, the depreciation of domestic currency, the free trade agreements that Vietnam signed and the shared border with the importing countries contribute to the increase of Vietnam’s export of all product groups. In contrast, the GDP of importing countries and population of Vietnam have no clear impacts on the export of any product groups.

    STRUCTURAL GAPS OF PUBLIC FINANCE IN VIETNAM

    The paper focuses on structural gap in public finance of Vietnam in long term from 1990 to 2010 and consequences of structural gaps in public finance - public debt crisis- in some developed countries. Public debt crisis has harmfully influenced to Eurozone including developed countries and to the most developed countries of the world such as United States of America, and Japan. Each country has its own reasons for public debt crisis; however, the principle of those crises is too high public expenditure leading to increase in budget deficit over long term - this called structural gaps of public finance. Available data shows that the ratio Public Debt/GDP in these countries increased over long time then rose sharply for several years right before the public debt crisis. Vietnam public debt has been increasing for the last five years as well. Analysis the secondary data of public finance of Vietnam from the credible sources in range from 1990 to 2011 combined with a survey about symptom of structural gaps of public finance in Vietnam manifests the evidence of structural gaps in public finance of Vietnam. This unbalance has become worse since 2005 when the public debt increases considerably, especially external debt. Growth rate of Vietnam is higher than average level of entire the world; however, the gains are fragile. That unsustainable circumstance is even exacerbated by high inflation and high public debt. The thesis recommends some solutions which the Government of Vietnam might apply to balance the government budget and improve its performance in the future.     Optimization of L-asparaginase production from Escherichia coli using response surface methodology

    Among the antitumor drugs, bacterial enzyme L-asparaginase has been employed as the most effective chemotherapeutic agent in pediatric oncotherapy especially for acute lymphoblastic leukemia. In previous study, the L-asparaginase from Erwinia chrysanthermy was expressed in Escherichia coli BL21(DE3). The recombinant L-asparaginase was produced from recombinant E.coli BL21(DE3) under different cultivation conditions (inducer concentration, inoculum concentration and KH2PO4 concentration). The optimized conditions by response surface methodology using face centered central composite design. The analysis of variance coupled with larger value of R2 (0.9) showed that the quadratic model used for the prediction was highly significant (p 0.05). Under the optimized conditions, the model produced L-asparaginase activity of 123.74 U/ml at 1.03 mM IPTG, 3% (v/v) inoculum and 0.5% (w/v) KH2PO4. Recombinant protein was purified by two step using gel filtration and DEAE chromatography. The purified L-asparaginase had a molecular mass of 37 kDa with specific activity of 462 U/mg and identified by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Results of MALDI-TOF analysis confirmed that recombinant protein was L-asparaginase II. Recombinant L-asparaginase has antiproliferative activity with K562 cell line. In conclusion, this study has innovatively developed cultivation conditions for better production of recombinant L-asparaginase in shake flask culture

    How scientific research changes the Vietnamese higher education landscape: Evidence from social sciences and humanities between 2008 and 2019

    Background: In the context of globalization, Vietnamese universities, whose primary function is teaching, there is a need to improve research performance. Methods: Based on SSHPA data, an exclusive database of Vietnamese social sciences and humanities researchers’ productivity, between 2008 and 2019 period, this study analyzes the research output of Vietnamese universities in the field of social sciences and humanities. Results: Vietnamese universities have been steadily producing a high volume of publications in the 2008-2019 period, with a peak of 598 articles in 2019. Moreover, many private universities and institutions are also joining the publication race, pushing competitiveness in the country. Conclusions: Solutions to improve both quantity and quality of Vietnamese universities’ research practice in the context of the industrial revolution 4.0 could be applying international criteria in Vietnamese higher education, developing scientific and critical thinking for general and STEM education, and promoting science communication

    Using fly ash treated by NaOH and H2SO4 solutions for Hg2+ and Cd2+ ion adsorption.

    This paper presents the results of adsorption ability of heavy metal ions (Hg2+ and Cd2+) by fly ash (FA) before and after treatment using NaOH and H2SO4 solutions.  Original- and treated FA were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Specific surface area of FA before and after treatment was calculated by Brunauer – Emmett – Teller (BET) isotherm equation. The obtained results indicated that the morphology and specific surface area of FA changed clearly after treatment by acid or alkaline solutions. Adsorption capacity the Hg2+ and Cd2+ ion by FA was determined from data of UV-Vis spectra. After treatment, the adsorption capacity of ions by FA increased remarkably in comparison with non-treated FA. The FA treated by NaOH solution has the adsorption capacity higher than FA treated by H2SO4 solution. The maximum adsorption capacity of the FA treated by NaOH solution for Cd2+ and Hg2+ ions at room temperature is 28.97 and 14.60 mg/g, respectively. The equilibrium adsorption data were described by the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The results showed that equilibrium data were fitted well to the Langmuir isotherm. Keywords.     Antibacterial activity of Piper betle extracts on Helicobacter pylori and identification of potential compounds

    Helicobacter pylori is one of the most common infectious bacteria in the world that causes gastric diseases leading to cancer. The increase of multiple antibiotic resistance rates of H. pylori have been reported worldwide. Thus, development of novel drugs is urgently required. Piper betle has many therapeutic values in traditional medicine. In this study, therefore, we investigated antibacterial activity of P. betle extracts and their fractions against a H. pylori strain isolated in Vietnam. The agar disk diffusion assay showed inhibition zone of ethyl acetate extract and methanol extract from P. betle leaf that of were 46 mm and 32 mm in diameter, respectively. After fractionation of the ethyl acetate extract through silica gel column chromatography, two peaks, PD2 and PD3, out of 12 fractions showed the strongest antibacterial activity. PD2 was sub-fractionated further by re-chromatography on the silica gel column, and subfraction TK12 gave best resolution on LC-MS analysis. Finally, 4 potential compounds, quercetrin, calodenin B, vitexin and plicatipyrone, were identified in TK12 fraction.

    Differentiation Effect of Two Alkaloid Fractions from Vietnamese Lycopodiaceae on Mouse Neural Stem Cells

    Various Lycopodium alkaloids have been studied for their various biological activities including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and neuroprotective activities. Moreover, these alkaloid compounds have high potential in the treatment of neuron degenerative disease. This study has been carried out to test the effect of Huperzia serrata (Thunb.) Trevis, and Lycopodium clavatum L alkaloid fractions on the mouse neural stem cells (NSCs). Firstly, the alkaloid fractions were used to verify its toxicity on NSCs. The multiple concentrations of alkaloid fractions from H. serrata (0.044; 0.088; 0.175; 0.35; 0.7; 1.4 mg/ml) and L. clavatum (0.031; 0.063; 0.125; 0.25; 0.50; 1.0; 2.0 mg/ml) have been used for the treatment of NSCs at period of 48h incubation. Results of the study suggested that the IC50 value of H. serrata and L. clavatum was 0.56 mg/ml and 0.50 mg/ml, respectively. Then, the NSCs were differentiated in the presence of 5 and 10 µg/ml of alkaloid fraction from H. serrata; 0.625 and 1.25 µg/ml of alkaloid fraction from L. clavatum for 6 days. Here, we observed the primary NSCs treated with alkaloid fraction extract from H. serrata showed the increased gene expression level of early neuron TUBB3 and neuron-specific cytoskeleton MAP2. On the other hand, the L. clavatum alkaloid fraction increased the expression of neural stem cell marker genes (Nestin and PAX6) and decreased neuron marker genes. In conclusion, these results established that alkaloid fraction from H. serrata promoted differentiation of the mouse NSCs to neuron cells, and L. clavatum extract had a capacity for stemness maintenance

    Genetic characteristics of Panax vietnamensis Ha & Grushv. populations based on ssr

    The results of genetic analysis of two Panax vietnamensis populations, collected in Tac-ngo ginseng garden, Tra Linh commune, Quang Nam Province and Mang ri ginseng garden, Kon Tum Province, showed that the population of ngoc linh ginseng in Quang Nam has higher alen frequency compared to the Ngoc Linh ginseng population in Kon Tum (AR = 2.27 AR = 2.05). The population of ngoc linh ginseng in Quang Nam has the expected heterozygous frequency (He) higher than the expected heterozygous frequency of the ginseng population in Kon Tum (0.42 0.4). The observed heterozygous frequency (Ho) of the ngoc linh population in Quang Nam was also higher than the observed heterozygous frequency compared to the ngoc linh ginseng population in Kon Tum (0.49 0.43). These results demonstrated that both populations of ngoc linh ginseng in Quang Nam and Kon Tum are maintaining high heterozygous frequencies; self-pollination has not affected to the genetic structure of these both populations yet. However, the population of ngoc linh ginseng in Quang Nam showed a higher level of diversity and heterozygous frequency than the ngoc linh ginseng population in Kon Tum.

    SEASONAL VARIATION OF PHYTOPLANKTON FUNCTIONAL GROUPS IN TUYEN LAM RESERVOIR, CENTRAL HIGHLANDS, VIETNAM

    Seasonal changes in freshwater phytoplankton assemblages at Tuyen Lam Reservoir in the Central Highlands of Vietnam were classified into 23 functional groups based on physiological, morphological, and ecological characteristics. A total of 168 species were recorded during 10 surveys from 2015 to 2019 at 7 sampling sites, with Chlorophyta dominating in number of species. Phytoplankton abundance varied from 0.18×105 to 21.2×105 cells/L during the study period, mainly due to cyanobacteria. Seven of the 23 functional groups were considered to be dominant (relative density > 5%).  The dominant functional groups were groups M and G in the dry season and groups M, G, P, and E in the rainy season. Group M (Microcystis aeruginosa) was the most common in both seasons, while group P (Closterium, Staurastrum, Aulacoseira), group E (Dinobryon, Synura), and group G (Sphaerocystis, Eudorina) were more common in the rainy season. The Shannon diversity index (H¢) showed that phytoplankton communities were relatively diverse and that most of the study sites were lightly polluted. However, the ecological status has deteriorated at some locations due to the overgrowth of group M, leading to eutrophication in this reservoir. This study highlights the usefulness of functional groups in the study of seasonal changes in phytoplankton dynamics. Functional groups are applied for the first time at Tuyen Lam Reservoir and can be used to predict early-stage cyanobacterial blooms in future studies
