Stability of plane Poiseuille flow of a fluid with pressure-dependent viscosity
We study the linear stability of a plane Poiseuille flow of an incompressible fluid whose viscosity depends linearly on the pressure. It is shown that the local critical Reynolds number is a sensitive function of the applied pressure gradient and that it decreases along the channel. While in the limit of small pressure gradients conventional results for a pressure-independent Newtonian fluid are recovered, a significant stabilisation of the flow and an elongation of the critical disturbance wavelength are observed when
the longitudinal pressure gradient is increased. These features drastically distinguish the stability characteristics of a piezo-viscous flow from its pressure-independent Newtonian counterpart
Stability of plane Poiseuille-Couette flows of a piezo-viscous fluid
We examine stability of fully developed isothermal unidirectional plane Poiseuille--Couette flows of an incompressible fluid whose viscosity depends linearly on the pressure as previously considered in Hron01 and Suslov08. Stability results for a piezo-viscous fluid are compared with those for a Newtonian fluid with constant viscosity. We show that piezo-viscous effects generally lead to stabilisation of a primary flow when the applied pressure gradient is increased. We also show that the flow becomes less stable as the pressure and therefore the fluid viscosity decrease downstream. These features drastically distinguish flows of a piezo-viscous fluid from those of its constant-viscosity counterpart. At the same time the increase in the boundary velocity results in a flow stabilisation which is similar to that observed in Newtonian fluids with constant viscosity
Revisiting plane Couette-Poiseuille flows of a piezo-viscous fluid
We re-examine fully developed isothermal unidirectional plane Couette-Poiseuille flows of an incompressible fluid whose viscosity depends linearly on the pressure as previously considered in Hron et al 2001. We show that the conclusion made there that, in contrast to Newtonian and power-law fluids, piezo-viscous fluids allow multiple solutions is not justified, and that the inflection velocity profiles reported in Hron et al 2001 cannot exist. Subsequently, we undertake a systematic parametric study of these flows and identify three distinct families of solutions which can exist in the considered geometry. One of these families has no similar counterpart for fluids with pressure-independent viscosity. We also show that the critical wall speed exists beyond which Poiseuille-type flows are impossible regardless of the magnitude of the applied pressure gradient. For smaller wall speeds channel choking occurs for Poiseuille-type flows at large pressure gradients. These features distinguish drastically piezo-viscous fluids from their Newtonian and power-law counterparts
Evaluate the Results at Minimum 2-Years of Treating Rotator Cuff Tear by Arthroscopic Surgery
BACKGROUND: Rotator cuff tear (RCT) is a common injury of the shoulder, especially middle-aged people. Nonoperative treatment, cortisone injections are only effective at an early stage. Open surgery causes postoperative atrophy of the deltoid muscle, so results are limited. Arthroscopic rotator cuff repair surgery has been performed in Vietnam for about ten years, with many advantages such as the ability to accurately assess the lesions and less invasive procedure. In order to have a clearer view, we performed a mid-term assessment of the effectiveness of this surgery.
AIM: Evaluate results over 2 years of patients with rotator cuff tears treated with arthroscopic surgery and their quality of life.
METHOD: A group of 30 patients were diagnosed with RCT and surgery by arthroscopy to treat at Hanoi Medical University Hospital and Saint Paul Hospital between Jun 2015 and April 2017. The results of the surgeries were assessed by the degree of pain, muscle power, motion of the shoulder joint according to UCLA shoulder score. Evaluate the quality of life through the Rotator Cuff-Quality of Life (RC-QoL) index.
RESULTS: The average age was 60.7 years. Female / male ratio was 1.3. Thirty-six months ± 6.41 was the average follow-up time (min 27 – max 50 months). The shoulder function is recorded according to UCLA has an average score of 30.9, therein good and excellent result were 90 %. The mean RC-QoL index was 91.5%.
CONCLUSION: Treatment of RCT by arthroscopic surgery that has been evaluated for a minimum of 2 years follow-up showed good results and high quality of patient’s life
Efficient computational homogenisation of 2D beams of heterogeneous elasticity using the patch scheme
Modern 'smart' materials have complex heterogeneous microscale structure,
often with unknown macroscale closure but one we need to realise for large
scale engineering and science. The multiscale Equation-Free Patch Scheme
empowers us to non-intrusively, efficiently, and accurately predict the large
scale, system level, solutions through computations on only small sparse
patches of the given detailed microscale system. Here the microscale system is
that of a 2D beam of heterogeneous elasticity, with either fixed fixed,
fixed-free, or periodic boundary conditions. We demonstrate that the described
multiscale Patch Scheme simply, efficiently, and stably predicts the beam's
macroscale, with a controllable accuracy, at finite scale separation. Dynamical
systems theory supports the scheme. This article points the way for others to
use this systematic non-intrusive approach, via a developing toolbox of
functions, to model and compute accurately macroscale system-levels of general
complex physical and engineering systems
Abietane diterpenoids and neolignans from the roots of Pinus kesiya
The phytochemical investigation of the ethyl acetate extract of Pinus kesiya Royle ex Gordon roots led to the isolation of two abietane diterpenes, 7-oxo-15-hydroxy-dehydroabietic acid (1) and dehydroabietic acid (2) as well as two neolignans, cedrusin (3) and cedrusin-4-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (4). Their structures were determined by combination of spectral analysis and comparison with reported data. Among them, compound 1 was isolated from the genus Pinus for the first time. Keywords. Pinus kesiya, abietane diterpenes, neolignans, dehydroabietic acid, cedrusin
FACTORS INFLUENCING VIETNAMESE STUDENTS’ CHOICES TO ATTAIN ENGLISH PROFICIENCY STANDARDS IN A UNIVERSITY IN VIETNAM
In the current era of globalization, English is considered a necessary skill for education and work and a criterion for evaluation in recruitment and graduation assessments in many places in Vietnam. According to the project entitled "Teaching and Learning Foreign Languages in the National Education System Phase 2008 - 2020", non-English majored university students must achieve a minimum of Level 3 according to the 6-level Foreign Language Proficiency Framework used in Vietnam. Several universities have diversified their ways to meet these standards to facilitate students in meeting the English language outcomes, allowing students more opportunities to choose ways that are suitable for them. However, this also indicates that various influencing factors will impact students' selection of ways to meet these standards. This research explores the primary ways students choose to fulfill English language standards as stipulated and analyzes the factors influencing the choices of non-English major students in universities in Vietnam. A Fuzzy LQR PID Control for a Two-Legged Wheel Robot with Uncertainties and Variant Height
This paper proposes a fuzzy LQR PID control for a two-legged wheeled balancing robot for keeping stability against uncertainties and variant heights. The proposed control includes the fuzzy supervisor, LQR, PID, and two calibrations. The fuzzy LQR is conducted to control the stability and motion of the robot while its posture changes with respect to time. The fuzzy supervisor is used to adjust the LQR control according to the robotic height. It consists of one input and one output. The input and output have three membership functions, respectively, to three postures of the robot. The PID control is used to control the posture of the robot. The first calibration is used to compensate for the bias value of the tilting angle when the robot changes its posture. The second calibration is applied to compute the robotic height according to the hip angle. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control, a practical robot with the variant height is constructed, and the proposed control is embedded in the control board. Finally, two experiments are also conducted to verify the balancing and moving ability of the robot with the variant posture
A study of ion wind generator using parallel arranged electrode configuration for centrifugal flow mixer
Ion wind is recently applied in various research areas such as the biomedical engineering, microfluidic mixing and particle manipulation. In this work, a bipolar ion wind generator configured by parallel arranged electrodes is used for centrifugal mixing applications. With the proposed configuration, negative and positive ion winds are simultaneously generated, mixed and then neutralized by each other while travelling toward liquid surface. The efficiency of the device was investigated both computationally and experimentally. The mixing of liquid occurred in different ways when the system is activated by either direct or alternating currents. Furthermore, the mixing is dependent on the dimension of electrode tip
A circulatory ionic wind for inertial sensing application
A novel gyroscope using circulatory electro-hydrodynamics flow in a confined space is presented for the first time. The configuration of the new gyroscope includes three point-ring corona discharge actuators that generate ion flows in three separated sub-channels. The three ion flows then merge together when going through a nozzle of the main chamber entrance and create a jet flow. In the new configuration, the residual charge of ion wind flow is removed by a master-ring electrode located at one end of the main chamber. Under the effect of the angular speed of gyroscope, the jet flow is deflected and this deflection is sensed using hotwires. The results, which are consistently acquired by both the numerical simulation and experiment on our prototypes, demonstrate the repeatability and stability of the new approach. Since the ion wind can be generated by a minimum power, the present configuration-based device does not require any vibrating component. Thus, the device is robust, cost, and energy-effective
