    Idiom Teaching and Learning in Vietnam: Challenges and Activities

    The demands for learning English as a foreign language have been increasing over the last fifteen years in Vietnam. It is commonly believed that idiomatic expressions are not important in learning English as a foreign language. Strutz (1996), however, maintained that "no one can be said to be really proficient in a language until he or she possesses an idiomatic command of it" (vii). Drawing from relevant research and studies in the field of figurative language acquisition, this paper aims to present current issues of teaching and learning idiomatic language in Vietnam followed by some recommended teaching activities.     THE CUISINE OF THE EDE PEOPLE IN KMRONG PRŎNG VILLAGE, BUON MA THUOT (DAK LAK PROVINCE)

    The Ede are a Malayo-Polynesian language-speaking ethnic group residing primarily in Dak Lak, Dak Nong, Phu Yen, and Khanh Hoa provinces. They have a rich and unique tangible and intangible culture. From 2017 to 2020, the authors carried out many field trips to Kmrong Prŏng A and Kmrong Prŏng B villages (Ea Tu Commune, Buon Ma Thuot) to research, collect, and inventory the material and spiritual cultural heritage of the Ede for conservation and exhibition at the Dak Lak provincial museum. In this article, we introduce some traditional dishes of the Ede in Krmong Prŏng village, research and evaluate traditional aspects of their cuisine, and propose some recommendations and solutions to preserve and promote the unique Ede cuisine in the current period of development and integration

    Energy Efficiency Maximization for C-RANs: Discrete Monotonic Optimization, Penalty, and l0-Approximation Methods

    We study downlink of multiantenna cloud radio access networks (C-RANs) with finite-capacity fronthaul links. The aim is to propose joint designs of beamforming and remote radio head (RRH)-user association, subject to constraints on users' quality-of-service, limited capacity of fronthaul links and transmit power, to maximize the system energy efficiency. To cope with the limited-capacity fronthaul we consider the problem of RRH-user association to select a subset of users that can be served by each RRH. Moreover, different to the conventional power consumption models, we take into account the dependence of baseband signal processing power on the data rate, as well as the dynamics of the efficiency of power amplifiers. The considered problem leads to a mixed binary integer program (MBIP) which is difficult to solve. Our first contribution is to derive a globally optimal solution for the considered problem by customizing a discrete branch-reduce-and-bound (DBRB) approach. Since the global optimization method requires a high computational effort, we further propose two suboptimal solutions able to achieve the near optimal performance but with much reduced complexity. To this end, we transform the design problem into continuous (but inherently nonconvex) programs by two approaches: penalty and \ell_{0}-approximation methods. These resulting continuous nonconvex problems are then solved by the successive convex approximation framework.     Students’ Perceived Well-Being and Online Preference : Evidence from Two Universities in Vietnam during COVID-19

    University education is still being impacted two years after the COVID-19 outbreak. We performed a rapid survey in February 2022 at two public universities in Vietnam to examine the effects of the pandemic on well-being and the factors that may associate with online class preference among university students as well as to investigate the need for support to improve resilience. A web-based survey included 1589 undergraduate students in total. Both quantitative and qualitative data analysis was carried out. Overall, approximately a quarter of respondents said that they perceived an influence on their health, 42.9% expressed stress, and more than 70% reported worrying about the future. In total, 61.9% of the respondents reported having satisfaction with online classes, while over half of them preferred a program of 50% online classes. Students who live in an urban area, are female, have had pre-COVID-19 campus life experience, have decreased income, and/or experience low online satisfaction and over-information may be in need of more support. The results show implications for universities to consider policies addressing well-being and post-pandemic online education. Providing support to university students to improve their resilience against the impact on their studying, campus life, health, and well-being should be prioritized during and post-pandemic
