    Is landholding a potential barrier to adopting profitable livelihoods in the Mekong Delta region in Vietnam ?

    Using secondary data on rural households in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam, our study is the first to identify (i) what livelihoods are adopted by rural households, (ii) which ones are profitable and which are not, and (iii) whether access to various types of land is an important factor affecting households’ choice of remunerative livelihoods. Considering various income sources, we apply cluster analysis techniques to offer the first classification of five types of livelihood adopted by local households. We then compare livelihood outcomes across livelihood groups using Bonferroni pairwise tests and quantile functions (Pen’s parades). It was found that households engaged in farm work, formal wage-earning work and non-wage work livelihoods obtained higher levels of income than did those with livelihoods depending on informal wage-earning work or non-labor income sources. Using a multinomial logit model, we also examine factors affecting choices of income-earning activities, and find that several types of land are positively associated with the choice of high-return livelihoods, implying that lack of access to land is a potential obstacle to adopting profitable livelihoods. Fortunately, education is found to play a major role in the pursuit of remunerative livelihoods, which suggests that better education would help households move from low- to high-return activities

    In vitro bioactivities of Codonopsis javanica root extract from Kon Tum province, Vietnam

    Dangshen Codonopsis javanica exhibits invaluable medicinal properties in herbal remedies; however, there has currently not been much specific analysis of the phytochemicals and bioactivities of this plant. The root ethanol extract of C. javanica contains substances such as saponins, phenolic acids, terpenoids, and alkaloids. It displays an antibacterial effect against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus cereus with the IC50 values of 150, 100, 150, and 90 μg/mL, respectively. The antioxidant capacity of the root extract was also observed with an IC50 value of 46.8 ± 6.8 μg/mL. Furthermore, the extract exhibits activity on human cancer cell lines HepG2 (IC50 = 83.6 ± 2.7 μg/mL) and MCF-7 (IC50 = 95.3 ± 2.3 μg/mL). Hence, this study provides the basic data for further research on the bioactivities of natural compounds of Dangshen C. javanica for the first time

    Associations of Underlying Health Conditions With Anxiety and Depression Among Outpatients: Modification Effects of Suspected COVID-19 Symptoms, Health-Related and Preventive Behaviors

    Objectives: We explored the association of underlying health conditions (UHC) with depression and anxiety, and examined the modification effects of suspected COVID-19 symptoms (S-COVID-19-S), health-related behaviors (HB), and preventive behaviors (PB).Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 8,291 outpatients aged 18–85 years, in 18 hospitals and health centers across Vietnam from 14th February to May 31, 2020. We collected the data regarding participant's characteristics, UHC, HB, PB, depression, and anxiety.Results: People with UHC had higher odds of depression (OR = 2.11; p < 0.001) and anxiety (OR = 2.86; p < 0.001) than those without UHC. The odds of depression and anxiety were significantly higher for those with UHC and S-COVID-19-S (p < 0.001); and were significantly lower for those had UHC and interacted with “unchanged/more” physical activity (p < 0.001), or “unchanged/more” drinking (p < 0.001 for only anxiety), or “unchanged/healthier” eating (p < 0.001), and high PB score (p < 0.001), as compared to those without UHC and without S-COVID-19-S, “never/stopped/less” physical activity, drinking, “less healthy” eating, and low PB score, respectively.Conclusion: S-COVID-19-S worsen psychological health in patients with UHC.     Understanding Factors of Households' Circular Economy Adoption to Facilitate Sustainable Development in an Emerging Country

    A shift from a linear economy to a circular economy can help participants (i.e., enterprises and households) to cut expenses, stabilize supply chains for the long term, and lower manufacturing and operating costs. Although the circular economy can benefit both the economy and the environment, this topic has still been under-studied in developing countries. More specifically, there has been little known about conditions and/or barriers for stakeholders in adopting a circular economy. In this regard, the authors conducted a study among Vietnamese households to improve the understanding of the factors (both drivers and impediments) of a circular economy adoption. Specifically, the authors employed a questionnaire-based survey approach to collect data from 473 households operating in the agricultural sector in the Red River Delta, Vietnam. The PLS-SEM method was performed to unravel the complicated relationship between circular economy adoption, organizational innovation, and income of agricultural households. The results showed that the adoption of circular economy is widely influenced by many factors in Vietnam. For example, technology has a negative impact on the level of circular economy adoption while policy and regulation, management, customer, and society have the opposite effect. Furthermore, organizational innovation played a fully mediating role between circular economy adoption and households’ income. The results of the study offer many policy implications for supporting and increasing the households’ circular economy adoption for further sustainable development in Vietnam and beyond

    Conceptual Design of a 10 MW Multipurpose Research Reactor Using VVR-KN Fuel

    The paper presents a conceptual design of a 10 MW multipurpose nuclear research reactor (MPRR) loaded with the low-enriched uranium (LEU) VVR-KN fuel type. Neutronics and burnup calculations have been performed using the REBUS-MCNP6 linkage system code and the ENDF/B-VII.0 data library. The core consists of 36 fuel assemblies: 27 standard fuel assemblies and 9 control fuel assemblies with the uranium density of 2.8 gU/cm3 and the 235U enrichment of 19.75 wt.%. The cycle length of the core is 86 effective full-power days with the excess reactivity of 9600 and 1039 pcm at the beginning of cycle and the end of cycle, respectively. The highest power rate and the highest discharged burnup of fuel assembly are 393.49 kW and 56.74% loss of 235U, respectively. Thermal hydraulics analysis has also been conducted using the PLTEMP4.2 code for evaluating the safety parameters at a steady state of the hottest channel. The maximum temperatures of coolant and fuel cladding are 66.0°C and 83.0°C, respectively. This value is lower than the design limit of 98°C for cladding temperature. Thermal fluxes at the vertical irradiation channels and the horizontal beam ports have been evaluated. The maximum thermal fluxes of 2.5 × 1014 and 8.9 ×1013 n·cm−2·s−1 are found at the neutron trap and the beryllium reflector, respectively

    Comparative Analysis of the Dalat Nuclear Research Reactor with HEU Fuel Using SRAC and MCNP5

    Neutronics analysis has been performed for the 500 kW Dalat Nuclear Research Reactor loaded with highly enriched uranium fuel using the SRAC code system. The effective multiplication factors, keff, were analyzed for the core at criticality conditions and in two cases corresponding to the complete withdrawal and the full insertion of control rods. MCNP5 calculations were also conducted and compared to that obtained with the SRAC code. The results show that the difference of the keff values between the codes is within 55 pcm. Compared to the criticality conditions established in the experiments, the maximum differences of the keff values obtained from the SRAC and MCNP5 calculations are 119 pcm and 64 pcm, respectively. The radial and axial power peaking factors are 1.334 and 1.710, respectively, in the case of no control rod insertion. At the criticality condition these values become 1.445 and 1.832 when the control rods are partially inserted. Compared to MCNP5 calculations, the deviation of the relative power densities is less than 4% at the fuel bundles in the middle of the core, while the maximum deviation is about 7% appearing at some peripheral bundles. This agreement indicates the verification of the analysis models

    Interim Storage of the Dalat Nuclear Research Reactor: Radiation Safety Analysis

    Radiation safety analysis of a new interim storage of the Dalat Nuclear Research Reactor (DNRR) for keeping spent high enriched uranium (HEU) fuel bundles during the core conversion to low enriched uranium (LEU) fuel had been performed and presented. The photon source and decay heat of the spent HEU fuel bundles were calculated using the ORIGEN2.1 code. Gamma dose rates of the spent fuel interim storage were evaluated using the MCNP5 code with various scenarios of water levels in the reactor tank and cooling time. The radiation safety analysis shows that the retention of 106 spent HEU fuel bundles at the interim storage together with a core of 92 LEU fuel bundles meets the requirements of radiation safety. The results indicate that in the most severe case, i.e., the complete loss of water in the reactor tank, the operators still can access the reactor hall to mitigate the accident within a limited time. Particularly, in the control room, the dose rate of about 1.4 μSv/h is small enough for people to work normally
