    Energetic Oxygen and Sulfur in the Jovian Magnetosphere

    This paper reports measurements made by the cosmic ray subsystem onboard Voyager 1 and 2 in the Jovian magnetosphere. Energy spectra of oxygen ions in the energy range 1–20 MeV/nuc between 5 and 20 R_J are presented and used to calculate phase space densities. There is a steep positive radial gradient in the phase space density of the energetic oxygen ions in this region, indicating an inward diffusive flow. Solutions of the diffusion equation assuming a diffusion coefficient D and loss lifetime τ of the forms D=D_0L^n and τ=τ_0L^m, where D_0, τ_0, n, and m are constants, and L is the McIlwain parameter, are fit to the radial phase space density profile of oxygen ions with magnetic moments of 680 MeV/nuc-G. The best fits are found to have n + m ≈ 6 and 3 400 MeV/nuc-G diffuse inward across 10 R_J is 5 × 10^(21±1) ions s^(−1). The observations suggest that oxygen and sulfur ions in the Io plasma torus diffuse radially outward, are nonadiabatically accelerated in some region outside 17 R_J and then diffuse inward and outward from the acceleration region

    Observations of galactic cosmic ray energy spectra between 1 and 9 AU

    The variation of the 5 to 500 MeV/nuc cosmic ray helium component was studied between 1 and 9 A.U. using essentially identical detector systems on Pioneer 10 and 11 and Helios I. Between 100 and 200 MeV/nuc a radial gradient of 3.3?1.3%/A.U. is found. At 15 MeV/nuc this value increases to 20?4%/A.U. Between 4 and 9 A.U. a well defined intensity maximum is observed at approximately 17 MeV/nuc. The average adiabatic energy loss between 1 and 9 A.U. is approximately 4 MeV/nuc/A.U. The observed radial variation between 1 and 9 A.U. is well described by the Gleeson-Axford force field solution of the modulation equations over an energy range extending from 15 to 500 MeV/nuc and is in good agreement with the results reported by other Pioneer experiments. These values are much smaller than had been theoretically predicted

    The Keck Lyman Continuum Spectroscopic Survey (KLCS): The Emergent Ionizing Spectrum of Galaxies at z∼3z\sim3

    We present results of a deep spectroscopic survey designed to quantify the statistics of the escape of ionizing photons from star-forming galaxies at z~3. We measure the ratio of ionizing to non-ionizing UV flux density _obs, where f900 is the mean flux density evaluated over the range [880,910] A. We quantify the emergent ratio of ionizing to non-ionizing UV flux density by analyzing high-S/N composite spectra formed from sub-samples with common observed properties and numbers sufficient to reduce the statistical uncertainty in the modeled IGM+CGM correction to obtain precise values of _out, including a full-sample average _out=0.057±0.0060.057\pm0.006. We further show that _out increases monotonically with Lyα\alpha rest equivalent width, inducing an inverse correlation with UV luminosity as a by-product. We fit the composite spectra using stellar spectral synthesis together with models of the ISM in which a fraction f_c of the stellar continuum is covered by gas with column density N(HI). We show that the composite spectra simultaneously constrain the intrinsic properties of the stars (L900/L1500)_int along with f_c, N(HI), E(B-V), and fesc,absf_{esc,abs}, the absolute escape fraction of ionizing photons. We find a sample-averaged fesc,abs=0.09±0.01f_{esc,abs} =0.09\pm0.01, and that subsamples fall along a linear relation ⟨fesc,abs⟩∼0.75[W(Lyα)/110A]\langle f_{esc,abs}\rangle \sim 0.75[W(Ly\alpha)/110 A]. We use the FUV luminosity function, the distribution function n[W(Lyα)]n[W(Ly\alpha)], and the relationship between W(Lyα)W(Ly\alpha) and _out to estimate the total ionizing emissivity of z∼3z\sim3 star-forming galaxies with Muv < -19.5: ϵLyC∼6×1024\epsilon_{LyC}\sim 6\times10^{24} ergs/s/Hz/Mpc3^3, exceeding the contribution of QSOs by a factor of ∼3\sim 3, and accounting for ∼50\sim50% of the total ϵLyC\epsilon_{LyC} at z∼3z\sim3 estimated using indirect methods.Comment: 45 pages, 31 figures, ApJ, in pres

    What do we know about the risks for young people moving into, through and out of inpatient mental health care? Findings from an evidence synthesis.

    Background Young people with complex or severe mental health needs sometimes require care and treatment in inpatient settings. There are risks for young people in this care context, and this study addressed the question: ‘What is known about the identification, assessment and management of risk in young people (aged 11–18) with complex mental health needs entering, using and exiting inpatient child and adolescent mental health services in the UK?’ Methods In phase 1 a scoping search of two electronic databases (MEDLINE and PsychINFO) was undertaken. Items included were themed and presented to members of a stakeholder advisory group, who were asked to help prioritise the focus for phase 2. In phase 2, 17 electronic databases (EconLit; ASSIA; BNI; Cochrane Library; CINAHL; ERIC; EMBASE; HMIC; MEDLINE; PsycINFO; Scopus; Social Care Online; Social Services Abstracts; Sociological Abstracts; OpenGrey; TRiP; and Web of Science) were searched. Websites were explored and a call for evidence was circulated to locate items related to the risks to young people in mental health hospitals relating to ‘dislocation’ and ‘contagion’. All types of evidence including research, policies and service and practice responses relating to outcomes, views and experiences, costs and cost-effectiveness were considered. Materials identified were narratively synthesised. Results In phase 1, 4539 citations were found and 124 items included. Most were concerned with clinical risks. In phase 2, 15,662 citations were found, and 40 addressing the risks of ‘dislocation’ and ‘contagion’ were included supplemented by 20 policy and guidance documents. The quality of studies varied. Materials were synthesised using the categories: Dislocation: Normal Life; Dislocation: Identity; Dislocation: Friends; Dislocation: Stigma; Dislocation: Education; Dislocation: Families; and Contagion. No studies included an economic analysis. Although we found evidence of consideration of risk to young people in these areas we found little evidence to improve practice and services. Conclusions The importance to stakeholders of the risks of ‘dislocation’ and ‘contagion’ contrasted with the limited quantity and quality of evidence to inform policy, services and practice. The risks of dislocation and contagion are important, but new research is needed to inform how staff might identify, assess and manage them

    Strong Nebular Line Ratios in the Spectra of z~2-3 Star-forming Galaxies: First Results from KBSS-MOSFIRE

    We present initial results of a deep near-IR spectroscopic survey covering the 15 fields of the Keck Baryonic Structure Survey (KBSS) using MOSFIRE on the Keck 1 telescope, focusing on a sample of 251 galaxies with redshifts 2.0< z < 2.6, star-formation rates 2 < SFR < 200 M_sun/yr, and stellar masses 8.6 < log(M*/M_sun) < 11.4, with high-quality spectra in both H- and K-band atmospheric windows. We show unambiguously that the locus of z~2.3 galaxies in the "BPT" nebular diagnostic diagram exhibits a disjoint, yet similarly tight, relationship between the ratios [NII]6585/Halpha and [OIII]/Hbeta as compared to local galaxies. Using photoionization models, we argue that the offset of the z~2.3 locus relative to z~ 0 is explained by a combination of harder ionizing radiation field, higher ionization parameter, and higher N/O at a given O/H than applies to most local galaxies, and that the position of a galaxy along the z~2.3 star-forming BPT locus is surprisingly insensitive to gas-phase oxygen abundance. The observed nebular emission line ratios are most easily reproduced by models in which the net ionizing radiation field resembles a blackbody with effective temperature T_eff = 50000-60000 K and N/O close to the solar value at all O/H. We critically assess the applicability of commonly-used strong line indices for estimating gas-phase metallicities, and consider the implications of the small intrinsic scatter in the empirical relationship between excitation-sensitive line indices and stellar mass (i.e., the "mass-metallicity" relation), at z~2.3.Comment: 41 pages, 25 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal.     A Note on Computable Embeddings for Ordinals and Their Reverses

    We continue the study of computable embeddings for pairs of structures, i.e. for classes containing precisely two non-isomorphic structures. Surprisingly, even for some pairs of simple linear orders, computable embeddings induce a non-trivial degree structure. Our main result shows that although {ω⋅2,ω⋆⋅2}\{\omega \cdot 2, \omega^\star \cdot 2\} is computably embeddable in {ω2,(ω2)⋆}\{\omega^2, {(\omega^2)}^\star\}, the class {ω⋅k,ω⋆⋅k}\{\omega \cdot k,\omega^\star \cdot k\} is \emph{not} computably embeddable in {ω2,(ω2)⋆}\{\omega^2, {(\omega^2)}^\star\} for any natural number k≥3k \geq 3.Comment: 13 pages, accepted to CiE 202

    WeDRAW aims to mediate learning of primary school mathematical concepts, such as geometry and arithmetic, through the design, development and evaluation of multisensory serious games, using a combination of sensory interactive technologies. Working closely with schools, using participatory design techniques, the WeDRAW system will be embedded into the school curricula, and configurable by teachers. Besides application to typically developing children, a major goal is to examine this multisensory approach with visually impaired and dyslexic children

    Narrowband Lyman-continuum Imaging of Galaxies at z ~ 2.85

    We present results from a survey for z ~ 2.85 Lyman-continuum (LyC) emission in the HS1549+1933 field and place constraints on the amount of ionizing radiation escaping from star-forming galaxies. Using a custom narrowband filter (NB3420) tuned to wavelengths just below the Lyman limit at z ≥ 2.82, we probe the LyC spectral region of 49 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) and 91 Lyα emitters (LAEs) spectroscopically confirmed at z ≥ 2.82. Four LBGs and seven LAEs are detected in NB3420. Using V-band data probing the rest-frame nonionizing UV, we observe that many NB3420-detected galaxies exhibit spatial offsets between their LyC and nonionizing UV emission and are characterized by extremely blue NB3420–V colors, corresponding to low ratios of nonionizing to ionizing radiation (F_(UV)/F_(LyC)) that are in tension with current stellar population synthesis models. We measure average values of (F_(UV)/F_(LyC)) for our LBG and LAE samples, correcting for foreground galaxy contamination and H I absorption in the intergalactic medium. We find (F_(UV)/F_(LyC)_(corr)^(LBG)= 82 ± 45 and (F_(UV)/F_(LyC)_(corr)^(LAE)= 7.4 ± 3.6. These flux density ratios correspond, respectively, to relative LyC escape fractions of f_(esc,rel)^(LBG) = 5%-8% and f_(esc,rel)^(LAE)=18%-49%, absolute LyC escape fractions of f_(esc)^(LBG)=1%-2% and f_(esc)^(LAE)=5%-15%, and a comoving LyC emissivity from star-forming galaxies of 8.8-15.0 × 10^(24) erg s^(–1) Hz^(–1) Mpc^(–3). In order to study the differential properties of galaxies with and without LyC detections, we analyze narrowband Lyα imaging and rest-frame near-infrared imaging, finding that while LAEs with LyC detections have lower Lyα equivalent widths on average, there is no substantial difference in the rest-frame near-infrared colors of LBGs or LAEs with and without LyC detections. These preliminary results are consistent with an orientation-dependent model where LyC emission escapes through cleared paths in a patchy interstellar medium
