Détermination de la vitesse de sédimentation océanique par une méthode non destructive de spéctrometrie gamma

International audienceThe rate of oceanic sedimentation was determined by gamma-ray spectroscopy. The method consists of following the decay of the ratio Io:Th as a function of the depth in the core of sediment by measuring the gamma-rays emitted from their descendants. The sedimentation rate of an Indian Ocean core was determined as 1.2 mm/l000 yr. This value is compatible with previous results obtained by the chemical separation method of the thorium isotopes.La méthode consiste a suivre la décroissance du rapport Io/Th en fonction de la profondeur d’une carotte de sédiment, en mesurant le rayonnements gamma émis par leurs descendants. Nous avons mesuré par cette méhode la vitesse de sédimentation d’une carotte de l’Ocean Indien, une vitesse de 1,2 mm par 1000 ans a été trouvée, compatible avec d’autres études antérieure
