    HARM: A Numerical Scheme for General Relativistic Magnetohydrodynamics

    We describe a conservative, shock-capturing scheme for evolving the equations of general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics. The fluxes are calculated using the Harten, Lax, and van Leer scheme. A variant of constrained transport, proposed earlier by T\'oth, is used to maintain a divergence free magnetic field. Only the covariant form of the metric in a coordinate basis is required to specify the geometry. We describe code performance on a full suite of test problems in both special and general relativity. On smooth flows we show that it converges at second order.     The effects of long-term (up to 10 years) contact of inert materials with earth-storable propellants were studied for the purpose of designing chemical propulsion system components that can be used for current as well as future planetary spacecraft. The primary experimental work, and results to date are reported. Investigations include the following propellants: hydrazine, hydrazine-hydrazine nitrate blends, monomethyl-hydrazine, and nitrogen tetroxide. Materials include: aluminum alloys, corrosion-resistant steels, and titanium alloys. More than 700 test specimen capsules were placed in long-term storage testing at 43 C in the special material compatibility facility.     1995 atmospheric trace molecule spectroscopy (ATMOS) linelist

    The Atmospheric Trace Molecule Spectroscopy (ATMOS) experiment uses a Fourier-transform spectrometer on board the Space Shuttle to record infrared solar occultation spectra of the atmosphere at 0.01-cm^(-1) resolution. The current version of the molecular spectroscopic database used for the analysis of the data obtained during three Space Shuttle missions between 1992 and 1994 is described. It is an extension of the effort first described by Brown et al. [Appl. Opt. 26, 5154 (1987)] to maintain an up-to-date database for the ATMOS experiment. The three-part ATMOS compilation contains Line parameters of 49 molecular species between 0 and 10000 cm^(-1), The main list, with nearly 700,000 entries, is an updated version of the HITRAN 1992 database. The second compilation contains supplemental line parameters, and the third set consists of absorption cross sections to represent the unresolvable features of heavy molecules. The differences between the ATMOS database and other public compilations are discussed

This Research Brief focuses on the relationships between a range of individual student, family, home, pre-, primary and secondary school characteristics and students\u27 academic attainment in English, maths and science in Year 9 at secondary school (age 14). It compares the latest findings with those found for students\u27 attainment at younger ages. It also highlights the influences of secondary school on students\u27 attainment in the core curriculum areas and studies their academic progress across Key Stage 3 between the ages of 11 and 14

    The Effective Pre-school, Primary and Secondary Education Project (EPPSE) has inves tigated the academic and social behavioural (+ in the later stages the affective) development of approximately 3,000 children from the age of 3+ years since 1997. This report presents the results of analyses related to student’s experiences in Year 9 (age 14), with the purpose of creating measures of both school and classroom life as experienced by students. These measures have been used in the analysis of academic and social-behavioural outcomes as well as dispositions to investigate whether a student’s reported experience of school can significantly predict outcomes in other areas. The findings highlight the importance of the ‘student voice’ and provide an insight into the experiences of teenagers in the first decade of the 21st Century

    Trends in Elasticity and Electronic Structure of Transition-Metal Nitrides and Carbides from First Principles

    The elastic properties of the B1B_1-structured transition-metal nitrides and their carbide counterparts are studied using the {\it ab initio\} density functional perturbation theory. The linear response results of elastic constants are in excellent agreement with those obtained from numerical derivative methods, and are also consistent with measured data. We find the following trends: (1) Bulk moduli BB and tetragonal shear moduli G′=(C11−C12)/2G^{\prime}=(C_{11}-C_{12})/2, increase and lattice constants a0a_{0} decrease rightward or downward on the Periodic Table for the metal component or if C is replaced by N; (2) The inequality B>G′>G>0B > G^{\prime} > G > 0 holds for G=C44G=C_{44}; (3) GG depends strongly on the number of valence electrons per unit cell (ZVZ_{V}). From the fitted curve of GG as a function of ZVZ_{V}, we can predict that MoN is unstable in B1B_{1} structure, and transition-metal carbonitrides (e.g.e.g. ZrCx_{x}N1−x_{1-x}) and di-transition-metal carbides (e.g.e.g. Hfx_{x}Ta1−x_{1-x}C) have maximum GG at ZV≈8.3Z_{V} \approx 8.3.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, submitted to PRL. 2 typos in ref. 15 were correcte
