In order to elucidate the effect of the cuticle on the sorption behavior of wool fibers, the sorption of water vapor on Merino and chemically descaled wool fibers was measured with the weighing bottle and quartz spiralbalance methods. The equilibrium water uptake was higher for Merino wool than that for the modified one. This difference was ascribed to the decrease in the amount of polar groups in the modified wool. At the initial stages of water sorption, the sorption capacity of the modified wool was higher than that of Merino wool. The relationship between the water uptake and the square root of the sorption time showed that epicuticle and exocuticle layers of Merino wool acted as barriers for the water vapor penetration

Wool fiber and powder were succinylated with succinic anhydride in aqueous alkaline solution in order to improve water absorbability after partial hydrolysis with HCl that was a pretreatment to enhance the reactivity. Succinylation after partial hydrolysis raised the water absorbabilities of both samples to ca. 5 times. The water absorbabilitiy of the succinylated samples and add-ons of succinic anhydride showed a linear relationship in each case of wool fiber and powder, which suggests that carboxyl groups introduced in the samples by succinylation contribute the absorbance of water. Water regain of these samples also increased by 1.0~4.1% after the partial hydrolysis and succinylation

The result of SPM measurements in Singapore, Malacca and Kuala Lumpur on September 9-14, 2002 was reported and contour maps of the SPM concentration were made. The results varied considerably from \u27good\u27 in the urban districts of Singapore to \u27bad\u27 in the places where overlapping traffic jams occurred in Kuala Lumpur. Other Asian countries including Japan are very interested in this research. Previously measurements were made in Shanghai and Hong Kong and now they have been made in Singapore and Malaysia. It is desirable to carry out measurements in some other Southeast Asian countries including the conditions and policies of each country

Metabolic Disorder, Inflammation, and Deregulated Molecular Pathways Converging in Pancreatic Cancer Development: Implications for New Therapeutic Strategies

Pancreatic cancer develops and progresses through complex, cumulative biological processes involving metabolic disorder, local inflammation, and deregulated molecular pathways. The resulting tumor aggressiveness hampers surgical intervention and renders pancreatic cancer resistant to standard chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Based on these pathologic properties, several therapeutic strategies are being developed to reverse refractory pancreatic cancer. Here, we outline molecular targeting therapies, which are primarily directed against growth factor receptor-type tyrosine kinases deregulated in tumors, but have failed to improve the survival of pancreatic cancer patients. Glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK3β) is a member of a serine/threonine protein kinase family that plays a critical role in various cellular pathways. GSK3β has also emerged as a mediator of pathological states, including glucose intolerance, inflammation, and various cancers (e.g., pancreatic cancer). We review recent studies that demonstrate the anti-tumor effects of GSK3β inhibition alone or in combination with chemotherapy and radiation. GSK3β inhibition may exert indirect anti-tumor actions in pancreatic cancer by modulating metabolic disorder and inflammation
