Metamagnetic jump in the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the square-kagome lattice

The magnetization process of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on two-dimensional square-kagome lattice is studied theoretically. The metamagnetic jumps exist in the magnetization process at the higher edge of the 1/3 and 2/3 plateaus. The parameter-dependencies of the critical field and the magnitude of the magnetization jump at the higher edge of the 1/3 plateau are obtained by using the approximated state in the unit cell and compared with the nu- merical results of the exact diagonalization of 42 sites.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figure

Endometriosis of the Appendix Resulting in Perforated Appendicitis

Endometriosis is a relatively common disease among women of reproductive age. However, gastrointestinal endometriosis is rare and endometriosis of the appendix resulting in perforated appendicitis is even rarer. We experienced a case of endometriosis of the appendix manifesting as panperitonitis caused by perforation of the appendix. The patient was a 35-year-old woman who was hospitalized with an acute abdomen. She was diagnosed with panperitonitis and underwent urgent laparotomy. When perforation of the appendix was detected, appendectomy and intraperitoneal drainage were performed. Pathological examination revealed endometriosis extending from the muscularis propria to the subserosa, and a diagnosis of endometriosis of the appendix was made. We consider the relevant literature describing the mechanism by which endometriosis of the appendix occurs, and the association between endometriosis of the appendix and acute appendicitis

Gauge invariance of color confinement due to the dual Meissner effect caused by Abelian monopoles

The mechanism of non-Abelian color confinement is studied in SU(2) lattice gauge theory in terms of the Abelian fields and monopoles extracted from non-Abelian link variables without adopting gauge fixing. Firstly, the static quark-antiquark potential and force are computed with the Abelian and monopole Polyakov loop correlators, and the resulting string tensions are found to be identical to the non-Abelian string tension. These potentials also show the scaling behavior with respect to the change of lattice spacing. Secondly, the profile of the color-electric field between a quark and an antiquark is investigated with the Abelian and monopole Wilson loops. The color-electric field is squeezed into a flux tube due to monopole supercurrent with the same Abelian color direction. The parameters corresponding to the penetration and coherence lengths show the scaling behavior, and the ratio of these lengths, i.e, the Ginzburg-Landau parameter, indicates that the vacuum type is near the border of the type1 and type2 (dual) superconductor. These results are summarized that the Abelian fundamental charge defined in an arbitrary color direction is confined inside a hadronic state by the dual Meissner effect. As the color-neutral state in any Abelian color direction corresponds to the physical color-singlet state, this effect explains non-Abelian color confinement and supports the existence of a gauge-invariant mechanism of color confinement due to the dual Meissner effect caused by Abelian monopoles.Comment: 11 pages, 14 figure

A Study for Quality Assurance of Graduate Education using Student Data : Through constructing the Integrated Database of Education and Student Learning

Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST) had accepted governmental funding project “Quality Assurance for Graduate Education with International Coherence” from 2010 to 2014. We have constructed the integrated database of education and student learning for analysis of graduate education. At the viewpoint of enrollment management, this database covers huge data of education and student learning for the analysis of curriculum development and student engagement. Although some examples of such database on undergraduate education have already been conducted, our challenge will become a leading case on graduate education. As JAIST has an advanced and systematic educational system focusing on coursework, this database will become useful to improve curriculum development and student engagement. This paper describes the approach and process to construct the database, and suggests the rough results and perspectives concerning data analysis
