Adverse selection costs, trading activity and price discovery in the NYSE: An empirical analysis

    Get PDF
This paper studies the role that trading activity plays in the price discovery process of a NYSE-listed stock. We measure the expected information content of each trade by estimating its permanent price impact. It depends on observable trade features and market conditions. We also estimate the time required for quotes to incorporate all the information content of a particular trade. Our results show that price discovery is faster after risky trades and also at the extreme intervals of the session. The quote adjustment to trade-related shocks is progressive and this causes risk persistency and unusual short-term market conditions.Publicad

Application of the Ring Theory in the Segmentation of Digital Images

Ring theory is one of the branches of the abstract algebra that has been broadly used in images. However, ring theory has not been very related with image segmentation. In this paper, we propose a new index of similarity among images using Zn rings and the entropy function. This new index was applied as a new stopping criterion to the Mean Shift Iterative Algorithm with the goal to reach a better segmentation. An analysis on the performance of the algorithm with this new stopping criterion is carried out. The obtained results proved that the new index is a suitable tool to compare images.Comment: Very interesting new index to compute the similarity among images. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1306.262

Stopping Criterion for the Mean Shift Iterative Algorithm

Image segmentation is a critical step in computer vision tasks constituting an essential issue for pattern recognition and visual interpretation. In this paper, we propose a new stopping criterion for the mean shift iterative algorithm by using images defined in Zn ring, with the goal of reaching a better segmentation. We carried out also a study on the weak and strong of equivalence classes between two images. An analysis on the convergence with this new stopping criterion is carried out too.Comment: Have 8 pages. Is the first version of the more general pape

Pharmacists\u27 Rating of Relevance of Available Information in Deciding the Validity of Opioid Medication Prescriptions

    Get PDF
Pharmacists are tasked with making decisions regarding the validity of prescriptions. Some have proposed factors that should be considered when evaluating a prescription\u27s validity. Yet, there is little known about the decision process that pharmacists employ at the time of dispensing and what information pharmacists deem relevant in that decision-making process. Using an online survey instrument, a sample of community pharmacists were divided into three groups and presented with a prescription scenario. They were asked to rate the relevance of information, which is proposed to be appropriate and inappropriate, available at the time of dispensing. They were asked to consider this information in the context of deciding the validity of a prescription. The medications presented in the groups were a schedule-III opioid pain medication, a non-controlled legend antibiotic, or a muscle relaxant with a potential for abuse. A total of 2,328 pharmacists were sent requests to participate. This resulted in 104 usable responses, which represents a response rate of 7.7%. The relevance of the information was shown to differ based on the prescription type. Pharmacists attributed greater relevance to irrelevant factors when deciding the validity of prescription for a controlled substance than they did when evaluating an antibiotic (p\u3c0.001). This also was the case for suspicious factors (p\u3c0.001) and determinative factors (p\u3c0.003). Other factors were explored also. It seems clear that pharmacists are likely to judge different pieces of information about the patient and situation to be relevant depending on the medication being filled. Further research is needed to understand the role that this plays in pharmacists\u27 decisions to fill and willingness to fill different types of prescriptions

Developing a Culture of Care and Support: A Review of Institutional Practices and Growth Opportunities Affecting Black Male Student-Athletes at Southtown Community College

In December 2018, the Dean of Academic Affairs (DAA) was approached by the coach and members of the Southtown Community College (STC) basketball team regarding academic support for the team. The academic affairs team would delve into this situation and discover several areas where the college had failed these students. This study examines the conditions and climate that lead to the maltreatment of Black male student-athletes at STC and the feedback from the students affected. The feedback from these student-athletes gives a glimpse of their feelings of being mistreated because of their race and arguably their gender. The three goals of this research study are to 1. Qualitatively examine the factors, conditions, and practices that created a hostile, racist environment for Black student-athletes at STC; 2. Capture the experiences of individual Black male student-athletes through one-on-one interviews; and 3. Offer best practice recommendations to address the issues articulated by the experiences of Black male student-athletes at STC. Members of the men’s basketball team participated in taking surveys and provided additional feedback articulating their mistrust of the athletic director. They further stated, based on their observations and experience, that the athletic director exhibited racist attitudes and behaviors towards the men’s basketball team, almost all of whom are Black. These attitudes and behaviors were exhibited by a number of administrators connected to the STC athletic program and were reported to college administrators. This study looks at data surrounding the academic readiness and performance of Black male student-athletes in community colleges and available public data from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). It also examined theories and academic framework that demonstrate the best approach to community college students of color who are victims of poverty. This study further examines the lived reality, experiences and expectations of Black male student-athletes where institutions focus on athletic and not academic formation and ignore life needs beyond the college experience like lack of financial resources, food, shelter, and the lack of a support system. This case highlights the following recommendations for an improved student experience at STC: 1. Improve the hiring process by eliminating political connections through a transparent, inclusive process that involves all constituents affected by a given position. For example, the hiring committee for an athletic director should include student-athletes, coaches, district-level athletic leaders, college administrators and members from the community associated or connected to the athletic program in some way. 2. Professional formation program that includes understanding the importance of social-emotional health and racial sensitivity. This program should be done from the perspective of Critical Race Theory, allowing survivors of racism and emotional abuse at STC to tell their stories so that all can understand the effects of patterns of behavior and selfish leadership perspectives. 3. Adopt a hands-on approach to student support and student success – use the success of the student-athlete study sessions and the Intercessory Session by finding ways to apply the successful approach and results to other student services areas. 4. Academic Affairs and Student Affairs must work together to provide continued support for all students. Both areas must creatively develop ways to help students navigate the intricacies of college life. The development of the Intercessory Session is an example of an innovative program that serves students in need in a creative way. 5. The cultivation and implementation of a culture of care model for student support that unites external and internal constituents in student development and success

Building Resilience in Closed-Loop Supply Chains through Information-Sharing Mechanisms

In this paper we reflect on the role of information sharing on increasing the resilience of supply chains. Specifically, we highlight the lack of studies addressing this relevant topic in closed-loop supply chains. Then, we introduce the works covered by the Special Issue “Information Sharing on Sustainable and Resilient Supply Chains” to investigate the relationships between information sharing and resilience in sustainable supply chains. This article presents a balance regarding employment and job market in Colombia from 2002 to 2010. Due to its significance in the recent evolution of labor market, special focus is given to informal, independent, and selfemployment work. The research is focused on the analysis of information of labor market of the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE, for its acronym in Spanish), and based on the results, it is said that informality and independence are the main characteristics of the recent development of employment in Colombia.Fil: Sanchez Torres, Roberto Mauricio.
