Strange journeys
Work from Joshua Vanjaymes Tonies' thesis exhibition is framed into a critical discussion as a way of drawing connections across works and identifying the position of the artist and related modes of research and inquiry within his studio practice. Strange Journeys, examines a tension between two bodies of work which grapple with appropriated imagery and inquire into the artist's hand through the translation of gestures. Erasure is employed to produce a sense of the unfamiliar, resulting in a more immersive experience of negotiation of meaning for the viewer. A critical objective within my practice is the erosion of the familiar in my subject matter, which encompass the present and the past, to give birth to a new future that can only take place by forgetting what came before i
