    A low-cost mechanism to reconfigure the operating frequency band of a Vivaldi antenna for cognitive radio and spectrum monitoring applications

    A frequency agile Vivaldi antenna whose operating frequency band can be switched between two selected bands is proposed in this paper for spectrum monitoring and cognitive radio applications. A RF switch is introduced into the back-slot of a Vivaldi antenna to allow switching of the operational band. The realised gains of the antenna are 10.5 dBi in the low band around 3.1 GHz, and 12 dBi in high band around 4.1 GHz. The radiation pattern is stable and its direction is consistent across the two bands. This design can be applied to multiple reconfigurable bands by using more RF switches to tune the desired operating frequency. A set of reliable design equations has been provided as well. This reconfigurable antenna offers improved gain and isolation over multiple, wideband and multiband antennas without increasing the cost and size when compared to those designs reported

    Trust at Work: A Study on Faith and Trust of Protestant Entrepreneurs in China

    There is much talk about the trust crisis in China and the possible role of religion in rebuilding China’s moral order. This study is an attempt to examine religion’s impact on the emerging market economy in China, focusing on trust in business relations that might be generated by the Christian faith. Based on 43 in-depth interviews with Christian entrepreneurs in China, our study shows that the majority of our respondents tend to be: (1) more willing to be trustworthy after becoming Christians; (2) trusting people who share their faith more than others; (3) perceiving religious persons, regardless of what that religion is, as more trustworthy than the non-religious. Our study shows that religiosity is used by many Christian entrepreneurs as a category to guide their decision-making and that it is significant in stimulating and maintaining trust in and from others

    Certain gauge theories in four dimensions are known to admit semi-classical D-brane solitons. These are domain walls on which vortex flux tubes may end. The purpose of this paper is to develop an open-string description of these D-branes.     Functional Electrical Stimulation mediated by Iterative Learning Control and 3D robotics reduces motor impairment in chronic stroke

    Background: Novel stroke rehabilitation techniques that employ electrical stimulation (ES) and robotic technologies are effective in reducing upper limb impairments. ES is most effective when it is applied to support the patients’ voluntary effort; however, current systems fail to fully exploit this connection. This study builds on previous work using advanced ES controllers, and aims to investigate the feasibility of Stimulation Assistance through Iterative Learning (SAIL), a novel upper limb stroke rehabilitation system which utilises robotic support, ES, and voluntary effort. Methods: Five hemiparetic, chronic stroke participants with impaired upper limb function attended 18, 1 hour intervention sessions. Participants completed virtual reality tracking tasks whereby they moved their impaired arm to follow a slowly moving sphere along a specified trajectory. To do this, the participants’ arm was supported by a robot. ES, mediated by advanced iterative learning control (ILC) algorithms, was applied to the triceps and anterior deltoid muscles. Each movement was repeated 6 times and ILC adjusted the amount of stimulation applied on each trial to improve accuracy and maximise voluntary effort. Participants completed clinical assessments (Fugl-Meyer, Action Research Arm Test) at baseline and post-intervention, as well as unassisted tracking tasks at the beginning and end of each intervention session. Data were analysed using t-tests and linear regression. Results: From baseline to post-intervention, Fugl-Meyer scores improved, assisted and unassisted tracking performance improved, and the amount of ES required to assist tracking reduced. Conclusions: The concept of minimising support from ES using ILC algorithms was demonstrated. The positive results are promising with respect to reducing upper limb impairments following stroke, however, a larger study is required to confirm this

    On Propagation Characteristics of Reconfigurable Surface Wave Platform: Simulation and Experimental Verification

    Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) as a smart reflector is revolutionizing research for next-generation wireless communications. Complementing this is a concept of using RIS as an efficient propagation medium for potentially superior path loss characteristics. Motivated by a recent porous surface architecture that facilitates reconfigurable pathways with cavities filled with fluid metal, this paper studies the propagation characteristics of different pathway configurations in different lossy materials on the reconfigurable surface wave platform by using a commercial full electromagnetic simulation software and S-parameters experiments. This paper also looks into the best scheme to switch between a straight pathway and a 9090^\circ-bend and attempts to quantify the additional path loss when making a turn. Our experimental results verify the simulation results, showing the effectiveness of the proposed reconfigurable surface wave platform for a wide-band, low path loss and highly programmable communications.Comment: Submitted to IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON ANTENNAS AND PROPAGATION, 202

    Sufficiency Criterion for the Validity of the Adiabatic Approximation

    We examine the quantitative condition which has been widely used as a criterion for the adiabatic approximation but was recently found insufficient. Our results indicate that the usual quantitative condition is sufficient for a special class of quantum mechanical systems. For general systems, it may not be sufficient, but it along with additional conditions is sufficient. The usual quantitative condition and the additional conditions constitute a general criterion for the validity of the adiabatic approximation, which is applicable to all NN-dimensional quantum systems.     How Many Muscles? Optimal Muscles Set Search for Optimizing Myocontrol Performance

    In myo-control, for computational and setup constraints, the measurement of a high number of muscles is not always possible: the choice of the muscle set to use in a myo-control strategy depends on the desired application scope and a search for a reduced muscle set, tailored to the application, has never been performed. The identification of such set would involve finding the minimum set of muscles whose difference in terms of intention detection performance is not statistically significant when compared to the original set. Also, given the intrinsic sensitivity of muscle synergies to variations of EMG signals matrix, the reduced set should not alter synergies that come from the initial input, since they provide physiological information on motor coordination. The advantages of such reduced set, in a rehabilitation context, would be the reduction of the inputs processing time, the reduction of the setup bulk and a higher sensitivity to synergy changes after training, which can eventually lead to modifications of the ongoing therapy. In this work, the existence of a minimum muscle set, called optimal set, for an upper-limb myoelectric application, that preserves performance of motor activity prediction and the physiological meaning of synergies, has been investigated. Analyzing isometric contractions during planar reaching tasks, two types of optimal muscle sets were examined: a subject-specific one and a global one. The former relies on the subject-specific movement strategy, the latter is composed by the most recurrent muscles among subjects specific optimal sets and shared by all the subjects. Results confirmed that the muscle set can be reduced to achieve comparable hand force estimation performances. Moreover, two types of muscle synergies namely “Pose-Shared” (extracted from a single multi-arm-poses dataset) and “Pose-Related” (clustering pose-specific synergies), extracted from the global optimal muscle set, have shown a significant similarity with full-set related ones meaning a high consistency of the motor primitives. Pearson correlation coefficients assessed the similarity of each synergy. The discovering of dominant muscles by means of the optimization of both muscle set size and force estimation error may reveal a clue on the link between synergistic patterns and the force task

    Comparison between a novel liquid switch and a GaAs MMIC switch for reconfiguring the operating frequency of a Vivaldi antenna

    This article proposes a novel liquid switch to reconfigure the operating frequency of a frequency-independent antenna. A Vivaldi antenna using a low-cost GaAs MMIC RF switch is used as a landmark to compare the measured results. Two prototypes are measured in an anechoic chamber and the results have been compared. The antennas operate in two modes: low-band mode at 3 GHz with 11 dBi of gain and high-band mode operating at 4.5 GHz with a measured gain of 10.8 dBi. The reconfigurable Vivaldi antenna proposed here presents high isolation between operating bands, a minimum of 12 dB, while maintaining high gain and stable radiation pattern which is suitable for cognitive radio applications
