Critical properties of loop percolation models with optimization constraints
We study loop percolation models in two and in three space dimensions, in
which configurations of occupied bonds are forced to form closed loop. We show
that the uncorrelated occupation of elementary plaquettes of the square and the
simple cubic lattice by elementary loops leads to a percolation transition that
is in the same universality class as the conventional bond percolation. In
contrast to this an optimization constraint for the loop configurations, which
then have to minimize a particular generic energy function, leads to a
percolation transition that constitutes a new universality class, for which we
report the critical exponents. Implication for the physics of solid-on-solid
and vortex glass models are discussed.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure
Exact multilocal renormalization on the effective action : application to the random sine Gordon model statics and non-equilibrium dynamics
We extend the exact multilocal renormalization group (RG) method to study the
flow of the effective action functional. This important physical quantity
satisfies an exact RG equation which is then expanded in multilocal components.
Integrating the nonlocal parts yields a closed exact RG equation for the local
part, to a given order in the local part. The method is illustrated on the O(N)
model by straightforwardly recovering the exponent and scaling
functions. Then it is applied to study the glass phase of the Cardy-Ostlund,
random phase sine Gordon model near the glass transition temperature. The
static correlations and equilibrium dynamical exponent are recovered and
several new results are obtained. The equilibrium two-point scaling functions
are obtained. The nonequilibrium, finite momentum, two-time response and
correlations are computed. They are shown to exhibit scaling forms,
characterized by novel exponents , as well as
universal scaling functions that we compute. The fluctuation dissipation ratio
is found to be non trivial and of the form . Analogies and

A circle swimmer at low Reynolds number
Swimming in circles occurs in a variety of situations at low Reynolds number.
Here we propose a simple model for a swimmer that undergoes circular motion,
generalising the model of a linear swimmer proposed by Najafi and Golestanian
(Phys. Rev. E 69, 062901 (2004)). Our model consists of three solid spheres
arranged in a triangular configuration, joined by two links of time-dependent
length. For small strokes, we discuss the motion of the swimmer as a function
of the separation angle between its links. We find that swimmers describe
either clockwise or anticlockwise circular motion depending on the tilting
angle in a non-trivial manner. The symmetry of the swimmer leads to a
quadrupolar decay of the far flow field. We discuss the potential extensions
and experimental realisation of our model.Comment: 9 pages, 9 Figure
Predictors of oropharyngeal cancer survival in Europe
Objectives: HPV16-positive oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) patients experience better outcomes compared to HPV16-negative patients. Currently, strategies for treatment de-escalation are based on HPV status, smoking history and disease stage. However, the appropriate cut-point for smoking and the role of other non-clinical factors in OPC survival remains uncertain. Materials and Methods: We examined factors associated with OPC outcome in 321 patients recruited in a large European multi-center study. Seropositivity for HPV16 E6 was used as a marker of HPV16 positive cancer. Hazard ratios (HR) and confidence intervals (CI) were estimated using Cox proportional models adjusted for potential confounders. Results: Overall 5-year survival following OPC diagnosis was 50%. HPV16-positive OPC cases were at significantly lower risk of death (aHR = 0.51, 95% CI: 0.32–0.80). A significant effect on OPC survival was apparent for female sex (aHR 0.50: 95% CI: 0.29–0.85) and being underweight at diagnosis (aHR: 2.41, 95% CI: 1.38–4.21). A 10 pack year smoking history was not associated with overall survival. Higher stage at diagnosis appeared as the only factor significantly associated with OPC recurrence (aHR: 4.88, 95% CI: 2.12–11.21). Conclusion: This study confirms that HPV16 status is an independent prognostic factor for OPC survival while female sex lowers risk of death and being underweight at diagnosis increases the risk of death. Smoking was not an independent predictor of OPC survival. © 2018 Elsevier Lt
