Citizenship and social justice

Discussions on the problems of the welfare state are increasingly framed in terms of citizenship rather than social justice. The popularity of the concept of citizenship raises the question of its implications for social justice theory and research. In this article it is argued that whereas the dominant approach in social justice is essentially individualistic, the concept of citizenship focuses rather on individuals as members of a societal community, from which both rights and obligations are derived. This focus on communal membership suggests three important topics for social justice theory and research: (i) the need to distinguish between a civic and a justice motive for human behavior, (ii) the need to specify the frame of reference respondents should use when they make their justice judgments, and (iii) the need to recognize the fact that justice judgments may result from both adhering to criteria of justice and considering the consequences of their application

Eén van deze strategieën is gelegen in de mogelijkheid die de toeschouwer geboden wordt zich te identificeren met de hoofdpersoon, en diens lotgevallen als het wate mee te beleven. Douglas Sirk en zijn films

Douglas Sirk is van Duitse afkomst. Hij werd in 1900 als Hans Detlef Sierck geboren in Hamburg. Na een studie kunstgeschiedenis kwam hij bij het theater terecht en werd in 1921 dramaturg aan het Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg, waar hij enkele jaren later een benoeming als artistiek direkteur kreeg. Van 1929 tot 1936 vervulde hij deze funktie in Leipzig, waar hij onder meer Brechts Dreigroschenoper met groot sukses regiseerde. Daarna keerde hij - onder druk van de politieke situatie in Duitsland - het toneel de rug toe en stapte over op de film. Voor de produktiemaatschappij UFA maakte hij suksesvolle films als het melodrama SCHLUSSAKKORD (1936) en ZU NEUEN UFERN (1937). waarmee hij Zarah Leander tot grootste aktrice van Duitsland maakte. 00 00 94 96
