A complete genome sequence ofLactobacillus helveticus R0052, a commercial probiotic strain
Lactobacillus helveticus R0052 is a commercially available strain that is widely used in probiotic preparations. The genome sequence consisted of 2,129,425 bases. Comparative analysis showed that it was unique among L. helveticus strains in that it contained genes encoding mucus-binding proteins similar to those found in Lactobacillus acidophilus

Perpendicular-to-grain compression behaviour of screw reinforced timber and a novel application of digital image correlation
This project investigates various factors which influence the behaviour of a timber roof structure designed by Smith & Wallwork Engineers. The first part of the project focused on material of sweet chestnut, where Digital Image Correlation (DIC) was employed to obtain values for the shear modulus. DIC was able to implement the shear field test method prescribed in BS EN 408:2010, along with two new methods developed based on additional information available through DIC. These methods were accurate, fast to implement, and potentially more robust than the shear field test method. A method to estimate the true value of the Timoshenko shear coefficient was also developed. The second section of the project involved physical testing of portions of the roof structure to investigate the behaviour of screw-reinforced and unreinforced timber loaded perpendicular to grain. Together with finite element modelling, it was noticed that a key aspect of the connection's behaviour was the axial force transfer between overlapping screws via shear in the timber, and the resulting relative displacement between the screws. A simple spring model was developed to characterise the compression stiffness of the roof which can now be used in reverse to calculate the forces due to moisture expansion or contraction
Randomized Extended Kaczmarz for Solving Least-Squares
We present a randomized iterative algorithm that exponentially converges in
expectation to the minimum Euclidean norm least squares solution of a given
linear system of equations. The expected number of arithmetic operations
required to obtain an estimate of given accuracy is proportional to the square
condition number of the system multiplied by the number of non-zeros entries of
the input matrix. The proposed algorithm is an extension of the randomized

Experiences of diagnosis, stigma, culpability, and disclosure in male patients with hepatitis C virus: an interpretative phenomenological analysis
The current study aimed to explore the lived experience of patients with hepatitis C virus infection. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven male participants living with hepatitis C virus and were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Two master themes were identified: (1) diagnosis and the search for meaning and (2) impact of stigma on disclosure. Participants reported fears of contaminating others, feelings of stigma and concerns of disclosing the condition to others. Response to diagnosis, stigma and disclosure among the participants appeared to be interrelated and directly related to locus of blame for virus contraction. More specifically, hepatitis C virus transmission via medical routes led to an externalisation of culpability and an openness to disclosure. Transmission of hepatitis C virus as a direct result of intravenous drug use led to internalised blame and a fear of disclosure. The inter- and intra-personal consequences of hepatitis C virus explored in the current study have potential implications for tailoring future psychological therapy and psychoeducation to the specific needs of the hepatitis C virus population
Development and geometry of isotropic and directional shrinkage crack patterns
We have studied shrinkage crack patterns which form when a thin layer of an
alumina/water slurry dries. Both isotropic and directional drying were studied.
The dynamics of the pattern formation process and the geometric properties of
the isotropic crack patterns are similar to what is expected from recent
models, assuming weak disorder. There is some evidence for a gradual increase
in disorder as the drying layer become thinner, but no sudden transition, in
contrast to what has been seen in previous experiments. The morphology of the
crack patterns is influenced by drying gradients and front propagation effects,

Child Psychosocial Adjustment and Parenting in Families Affected by Maternal HIV/AIDS
Child adjustment and parenting were examined in 23 9-through 16-year-old youth from families affected by maternal HIV infection and 20 same-age peers whose mothers were not infected. Children whose mothers were seropositive reported significantly more externalizing problems. Infected mothers reported less age-appropriate supervision/monitoring relative to non-infected mothers. Better mother-child relationship quality and less impairment in parental supervision/monitoring of age-appropriate youth behaviors were associated with fewer externalizing difficulties among the HIV-positive group only. Similarly, only among HIV-infected mothers was refraining from engaging in inconsistent disciplinary tactics associated with lower reports of internalizing and externalizing problems. These data highlight the promise of programs targeting parenting skills to prevent or ameliorate child difficulties
Reliability and validity of an auditory working memory measure: data from elderly and right-hemisphere damaged adults
The use of non-standardized measures in research and clinical assessments creates difficulties with interpretation and generalization of results obtained. One example of a widely used non-standardized tool is the reading/listening span paradigm for assessment of working memory (WM). WM is an important construct because of its purported relationship to language comprehension and capacity theories of cognition. This paper investigates several facets of reliability and validity for an auditory working memory measure designed for older adults and individuals with right hemisphere brain damage (RHD). Results from 28 non-brain-damaged subjects (NBD) and 11 RHD subjects indicate that the measure is internally consistent and reliable over time. Construct validity evidence, which compares favourably with evidence from existing literature, suggests that for NBD subjects this tool differentiates WR I from simple short term memory. RHD subjects do not demonstrate the same pattern of validity results as the NBD group. Further evaluation with RHD patients is warranted, because clinically this tool may be useful as a measure of severity or a prognostic indicator of language comprehension abilities for this population
