New challenges for text mining: mapping between text and manually curated pathways
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Associating literature with pathways poses new challenges to the Text Mining (TM) community. There are three main challenges to this task: (1) the identification of the mapping position of a specific entity or reaction in a given pathway, (2) the recognition of the causal relationships among multiple reactions, and (3) the formulation and implementation of required inferences based on biological domain knowledge.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>To address these challenges, we constructed new resources to link the text with a model pathway; they are: the GENIA pathway corpus with event annotation and NF-kB pathway. Through their detailed analysis, we address the untapped resource, ābio-inference,ā as well as the differences between text and pathway representation. Here, we show the precise comparisons of their representations and the nine classes of ābio-inferenceā schemes observed in the pathway corpus.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>We believe that the creation of such rich resources and their detailed analysis is the significant first step for accelerating the research of the automatic construction of pathway from text.</p

Air quality co-benefits from climate mitigation for human health in South Korea
Climate change mitigation efforts to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have associated costs, but there are also potential benefits from improved air quality, such as public health improvements and the associated cost savings. A multidisciplinary modeling approach can better assess the co-benefits from climate mitigation for human health and provide a justifiable basis for establishment of adequate climate change mitigation policies and public health actions. An integrated research framework was adopted by combining a computable general equilibrium model, an air quality model, and a health impact assessment model, to explore the long-term economic impacts of climate change mitigation in South Korea through 2050. Mitigation costs were further compared with health-related economic benefits under different socioeconomic and climate change mitigation scenarios. Achieving ambitious targets (i.e., stabilization of the radiative forcing level at 3.4Ā W/m2) would cost 1.3-8.5 billion USD in 2050, depending on varying carbon prices from different integrated assessment models. By contrast, achieving these same targets would reduce costs by 23 billion USD from the valuation of avoided premature mortality, 0.14 billion USD from health expenditures, and 0.38 billion USD from reduced lost work hours, demonstrating that health benefits alone noticeably offset the costs of cutting GHG emissions in South Korea

Optical observations of NEA 3200 Phaethon (1983 TB) during the 2017 apparition
The near-Earth asteroid 3200 Phaethon (1983 TB) is an attractive object not
only from a scientific viewpoint but also because of JAXA's DESTINY+ target.
The rotational lightcurve and spin properties were investigated based on the
data obtained in the ground-based observation campaign of Phaethon. We aim to
refine the lightcurves and shape model of Phaethon using all available
lightcurve datasets obtained via optical observation, as well as our
time-series observation data from the 2017 apparition. Using eight 1-2-m
telescopes and an optical imager, we acquired the optical lightcurves and
derived the spin parameters of Phaethon. We applied the lightcurve inversion
method and SAGE algorithm to deduce the convex and non-convex shape model and
pole orientations. We analysed the optical lightcurve of Phaethon and derived a
synodic and a sidereal rotational period of 3.6039 h, with an axis ratio of a/b
= 1.07. The ecliptic longitude (lambda) and latitude (beta) of the pole
orientation were determined as (308, -52) and (322, -40) via two independent
methods. A non-convex model from the SAGE method, which exhibits a concavity
