Two-dimensional carrier density distribution inside a high power tapered laser diode

    Get PDF
The spontaneous emission of a GaAs-based tapered laser diode emitting at lambda = 1060 nm was measured through a window in the transparent substrate in order to study the carrier density distribution inside the device. It is shown that the tapered geometry is responsible for nonuniform amplification of the spontaneous/stimulated emission which in turn influences the spatial distribution of the carriers starting from below threshold. The carrier density does not clamp at the lasing threshold and above it the device shows lateral spatial hole-burning caused by high stimulated emission along the cavity center. Abstract: This research aimed to assess the social and environmental impacts of canola on the biodiesel production chain, as well as to analyze sustainability indicators in a reference term were canola is produced in the Passo Fundo region, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Methodology included extensive literature review and application of two impact assessment tools: a) an Eco·certification system for rural activities (Eco·certRural) with 24 criteria for evaluating production chain impacts, based on lhe input of 15 experts knowledgeable on the diverse segments of the biodiesel chain in the region of the study, and b) a System for weighted environmental impact assessment of rural activities (APOIA-NovoRural) with 62 indicators based on detailed interview and field analyses with a canola- producing farmer. The assessment led to lhe conclusion that in the Passo Fundo region the biodiesel production chain based on canola brings mostly positive impacts on the environment and for the livelihood of people involved in its production. Since it increases the use of farming inputs and off-farm resources, the aspects related to input and resources demands were less favorable. Canola production brought important contributions for the sustainability of the reference farm, with a general index of 0.77 (in a 0 to 1.0 utility scale)

Cooperative Effects in the Photoluminescence of (In,Ga)As/GaAs Quantum Dot Chain Structures

    Get PDF
Multilayer In0.4Ga0.6As/GaAs quantum dot (QD) chain samples are investigated by means of cw and time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy in order to study the peculiarities of interdot coupling in such nanostructures. The temperature dependence of the PL has revealed details of the confinement. Non-thermal carrier distribution through in-chain, interdot wave function coupling is found. The peculiar dependences of the PL decay time on the excitation and detection energies are ascribed to the electronic interdot coupling and the long-range coupling through the radiation field. It is shown that the dependence of the PL decay time on the excitation wavelength is a result of the superradiance effect

Communities, psychotherapeutic innovation and the diversity of international qualitative research in mental health

The articles in this special issue are hugely varied in terms of their country of origin (Brazil, Finland, Italy, Malaysia and the UK); theoretical influences (e.g. Lacanian theory, cultural-historical approaches and relational theories) and method of qualitative analysis (e.g. content and thematic analyses, Lacanian discourse analysis, Grounded theory, ethnography and auto-ethnography). In this commentary, I will discuss each article in turn before moving on to address some common issues including: the relationship between therapeutic innovation and research; differing implicit models of subjectivity; the need for theoretically pluralistic approaches to interpretation; and the need to incorporate the views of service users
