    Euclid detectability of pair instability supernovae in binary population synthesis models consistent with merging binary black holes

    We infer the expected detection number of pair instability supernovae (PISNe) during the operation of the Euclid space telescope, based on two binary population models that are consistent with binary black holes (BHs) observed by gravitational waves. The two models consider different PISN criteria depending on the 12^{12}C(α,γ)16(\alpha, \gamma)^{16}O reaction rate. The fiducial and 3σ3\sigma models adopt the standard and 3σ3\sigma-smaller 12^{12}C(α,γ)16(\alpha, \gamma)^{16}O reaction rate, which predicts that stars with helium core masses 65135M65-135 M_\odot and 90180M90-180 M_\odot cause PISNe, respectively. Our fiducial model predicts that Euclid detects several Type I or hydrogen-poor PISNe. For the 3σ3\sigma model, detection of 1\sim 1 Type I PISN by Euclid is expected if the stellar mass distribution extends to Mmax600MM_{\max} \sim 600 M_\odot, but the expected number becomes significantly smaller if Mmax300MM_{\max} \sim 300 M_\odot. Thus, we may be able to prove or distinguish the fiducial and 3σ3\sigma models by the observed PISN rate. This will help us to constrain the origin of binary BHs and the 12^{12}C(α,γ)16(\alpha, \gamma)^{16}O reaction rate. PISN ejecta mass estimates from light curves and spectra obtained by follow-up observations would also be important to constrain the 12^{12}C(α,γ)16(\alpha, \gamma)^{16}O reaction rate.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitte

    Descendants of the first stars: the distinct chemical signature of second generation stars

    Extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars in the Milky Way (MW) allow us to infer the properties of their progenitors by comparing their chemical composition to the metal yields of the first supernovae. This method is most powerful when applied to mono-enriched stars, i.e. stars that formed from gas that was enriched by only one previous supernova. We present a novel diagnostic to identify this subclass of EMP stars. We model the first generations of star formation semi-analytically, based on dark matter halo merger trees that yield MW-like halos at the present day. Radiative and chemical feedback are included self-consistently and we trace all elements up to zinc. Mono-enriched stars account for only 1%\sim 1\% of second generation stars in our fiducial model and we provide an analytical formula for this probability. We also present a novel analytical diagnostic to identify mono-enriched stars, based on the metal yields of the first supernovae. This new diagnostic allows us to derive our main results independently from the specific assumptions made regarding Pop III star formation, and we apply it to a set of observed EMP stars to demonstrate its strengths and limitations. Our results may provide selection criteria for current and future surveys and therefore contribute to a deeper understanding of EMP stars and their progenitors.Comment: 18 pages, 20 figures, published in MNRA

    Factual survey of the clinical use of deformable image registration software for radiotherapy in Japan

    Deformable image registration (DIR) has recently become commercially available in the field of radiotherapy. However, there was no detailed information regarding the use of DIR software at each medical institution. Thus, in this study, we surveyed the status of the clinical use of DIR software for radiotherapy in Japan. The Japan Society of Medical Physics and the Japanese Society for Radiation Oncology mailing lists were used to announce this survey. The questionnaire was created by investigators working under the research grant of the Japanese Society for Radiation Oncology (2017–2018) and intended for the collection of information regarding the use of DIR in radiotherapy. The survey was completed by 161 institutions in Japan. The survey results showed that dose accumulation was the most frequent purpose for which DIR was used in clinical practice (73%). Various commissioning methods were performed, although they were not standardized. Qualitative evaluation with actual patient images was the most commonly used method (28%), although 30% of the total number of responses (42% of institutions) reported that they do not perform commissioning. We surveyed the current status of clinical use of DIR software for radiotherapy in Japan for the first time. Our results indicated that a certain number of institutions used DIR software for clinical practice, and various commissioning methods were performed, although they were not standardized. Taken together, these findings highlight the need for a technically unified approach for commissioning and quality assurance for the use of DIR software in Japan

    Jumping to conclusion bias in adolescents with ASD

    Background and Purpose: Jumping to conclusion (JTC)—a cognitive bias in thinking processes—leads to drawing conclusions based on little information, and could be related to psychosis and paranoia. While it has recently been pointed out that it could accompany the autism spectrum disorder (ASD), no interventions targeting this bias in adolescents with ASD have been reported. Therefore, this exploratory study investigated the effects of a group social cognition program on JTC bias in adolescents with ASD. Patients and Methods : Group rehabilitation using social cognition and interaction training (SCIT) was conducted for 12- to 18-year-old adolescents with ASD. An SCIT program comprehensively targets social cognitive functions, including interventions for JTC bias, and examines changes before and after the SCIT intervention, social cognitive functioning tasks, and subjective quality of life (QOL). Results : Thirteen adolescents with ASD participated in this program ; 10 (76.9%) stayed through it. The proportion of participants with JTC bias decreased significantly before and after SCIT (before : 7 / 10 ; after : 1 / 10 ; p = 0.041), and subjective QOL increased significantly (p = 0.014). Conclusion : The results show that a group social cognition program with a JTC bias approach improves the JTC bias and increases subjective QOL in adolescents with ASD

    Anionic ordering in Pb₂Ti₄O₉F₂ revisited by nuclear magnetic resonance and density functional theory

    複合アニオン材料の構造決定における実験と計算の融合的アプローチ. 京都大学プレスリリース. 2022-10-31.A combination of 19F magic angle spinning (MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and density functional theory (DFT) were used to study the ordering of F atoms in Pb₂Ti₄O₉F₂. This analysis revealed that F atoms predominantly occupy two of the six available inequivalent sites in a ratio of 73 : 27. DFT-based calculations explained the preference of F occupation on these sites and quantitatively reproduced the experimental occupation ratio, independent of the choice of functional. We concluded that the Pb atom's 6s2 lone pair may play a role (∼0.1 eV per f.u.) in determining the majority and minority F occupation sites with partial density of states and crystal orbital Hamiltonian population analyses applied to the DFT wave functions
