    Management of Bedded-Pack Manure From Swine Hoop Structures: 1998 Results

    Hoop structures are an increasingly popular alternative to conventional confinement facilities for swine production. Animals bed and dung on a bedded manure pack, which generates heat and contributes to animal comfort during winter months. As it comes directly out of the hoop structure, the high degree of variability in the bedded pack makes it difficult to predict manure nutrient contributions to crop fertilization needs. Although manure from the dunging area has clear fertilizer value, the high-carbon (C) lownitrogen (N) status of the drier bedding may lead to nitrogen immobilization and crop stress if applied during or immediately prior to the growing season. This study examined the distribution of moisture, N, and temperature of the bedded pack inside a hoop, and evaluated the effect of 4 composting strategies on manure nutrient levels and uniformity, mass, volume, and moisture content. A simple loader built pile with no turning appeared to most effectively reduce nitrogen losses, but building piles with a manure spreader or frequent turning provided benefits in volume, mass, and moisture reduction. Composting did not consistently improve the nutrient variability of the manure, and additional studies are planned to address this concern

    Moving Beyond Concentrations: The Challenge of Limiting Temperature Change

    The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change shifted the attention of the policy community from stabilizing greenhouse gas emissions to stabilizing atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations. While this represents a step forward, it does not go far enough. We find that, given the uncertainty in the climate system, focusing on atmospheric concentrations is likely to convey a false sense of precision. The causal chain between human activity and impacts is laden with uncertainty. From a benefit-cost perspective, it would be desirable to minimize the sum of mitigation costs and damages. Unfortunately, our ability to quantify and value impacts is limited. For the time being, we must rely on a surrogate. Focusing on temperature rather than on concentrations provides much more information on what constitutes an ample margin of safety. Concentrations mask too many uncertainties that are crucial for policy making.

    Two generations of low-cost chemical fertilizer and the differentiation of crop from livestock farming have given manure a bad name, even among farmers. With increasing awareness and concern about the air and water impacts of improper manure management, it is imperative that both crop and livestock farmers once again consider manure as a resource rather than a waste (Fleming et al., 1998). To fully realize these benefits will require some changes in farming systems, technologies, and practices, and regulation is likely to be an even larger factor driving these changes than it is today. But unless these strategies generate on-farm benefits and address the farmer\u27s fundamental constraints, they are unlikely to be widely adopted or conscientiously implemented

Our objective is to show that the concepts of value and value creation arise from a single, unified framework that is firmly rooted in neoclassical microeconomic theory. This, in turn, allow us to demonstrate that the corporate valuation approach generically known as real options analysis is perfectly justifiable - without further qualification - in any situation when investors want managers to maximize NPV

    Amplified insert assembly: an optimized approach to standard assembly of BioBrickTM genetic circuits

    A modified BioBrick™ assembly method was developed with higher fidelity than current protocols. The method utilizes a PCR reaction with a standard primer set to amplify the inserted part. Background colonies are reduced by a combination of dephosphorylation and digestion with DpnI restriction endonuclease to reduce vector and insert background respectively. The molar ratio of the insert to vector in the ligation was also optimized, with the accuracy of the transformed construct approaching 100%

    A Limnological Study of Ricks Pond and the Gulpha Creek Drainage in Garland County, Arkansas

    A limnological investigation of Ricks Pond and the Gulpha Creek drainage of Garland County, Arkansas was conducted between 1 June 1978, and 21 August 1978. Water samples taken from ten stations on three different dates indicated that the stream and pond systems were typical in water quality characteristics of other small, high gradient streams and impoundments in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas. In Ricks Pond, thermal stratification occurred along with the development of an oxygen deficient zone below a depth of one meter. Other water quality parameters indicated that Ricks Pond is a moderately productive ecosystem, with the productivity limited by the nitrogen species. The fecal coliform bacterial counts were very low, indicating no direct input of excessive amounts of fecal matter into the system during the present study. However, a Hot Springs city sewer line runs through the pond, and two manholes emerge from the pond\u27s surface. The possibility exists that this sewer line could discharge raw sewage into Ricks Pond during periods of high water. A biological investigation was also conducted in the study area, and lists of the phytoplankton, periphyton, higher aquatic vegetation, zooplankton, benthic macroinvertebrates, and fishes are presented. Twenty-seven species of fishes were collected from the Gulpha Creek drainage, and no rare or endangered forms were found. Ricks Pond is best-suited for the establishment of a put- and-take fishery for channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus. The following recommendations were made for the establishment of such a fishery: (1) Renovation of the pond by draining and deepening it; (2) Removal of the sewer line from the pond; (3) Stocking of catchable size channel catfish at the rate of approximately 300-400 pounds per acre; (4) Periodic monitoring of the water quality
