A Case for the Decriminalization of Simple Possession of Narcotics in Mississippi

    Get PDF
Through its incarceration of simple possession offenders, Mississippi is failing to acknowledge the severity of addiction and importance of mental health. In this paper, I will examine Mississippi’s history of opinion and policy on drug use. In order to gain a better understanding of addiction and Mississippi’s criminal justice system, I interview several individuals with experience in varying aspects of these issues. Mississippi has one of the highest rates of incarceration in the United States, with stringent laws regarding the possession of narcotics. Mississippi’s mental health resources have been deemed unconstitutionally deficient on more than one occasion, and addicts are receiving inadequate care due to a combination of these two factors. In order to remedy these shortfalls, I recommend a full-scale decriminalization of simple possession of narcotics in Mississippi, with an expansion of mental health resources. I also emphasize the need for educational measures on substance abuse, addiction, and mental health, in order to end the negative stigma towards these issues and improve overall public health

Potential Security Vulnerabilities in Raspberry Pi Devices with Mitigation Strategies

    Get PDF
For this research project I used a Raspberry Pi device and conducted online research to investigate potential security vulnerabilities along with mitigation strategies. I configured the Raspberry Pi by using the proper peripherals such as an HDMI cord, a microUSB adapter that provided 5V and at least 700mA of current, a TV monitor, PiSwitch, SD Card, keyboard, and mouse. I installed the Rasbian operating system (OS). The process to install the Rasbian took about 10 minutes to boot starting at 21:08 on 10/27/2023 and ending at 21:18. 1,513 megabytes (MB) was written to the SD card running at (2.5 MB/sec). On Sunday, November 26th, 2023, one of the peripherals seemed to have a circuit trip. I used an Apple USB-C cord and block to connect the PiSwitch to a laptop. This gave enough power for the Raspberry Pi to turn on using the same adapter as before. I referred to the Pi manual often for troubleshooting. The device has five indicator LEDs that provide statuses/feedback. Only two of my lights were turned on which where: ACT which lights up green when the SD card is accessed and PWR—which turns on red—signifying it is hooked up to 3.3V power. After booting up, I was able to get onto the desktop and open up LXTerminal and start entering Linux commands. Due to a lack of resources, I did not have a Wi-Fi dongle to enable network interface wirelessly or an ethernet cable to provide a wired connection

Service-Learning in Social Work Education: Building Democracy through Informed Citizenship

    Get PDF
Longitudinal studies spanning the last three decades have indicated that incoming college students have become increasingly concerned with individual gain, competition, and materialism. This, coupled with 1996\u27s lowest voter turnout in 70 years and declining levels of participation in civic groups are indicators that citizens are relatively uninterested in, or lack the capacity to engage in activities that strengthen the democracy. To address this concern, faculty in social work education have been encouraged to reconsider traditional pedagogy and structure curricula so community service is combined with structured reflection; commonly known as service-learning. Undergraduate social work programs typically offer community service experiences and immerse students in experiential leaming opportunities through the practicum during the senior year. However, service-learning is being integrated into new and existing courses. allowing students direct exposure to diverse populations and practice opportunities much earlier in their education. The social work field has underscored the importance of building a strong democracy and an engaged citizenry to build stronger communities, and service-learning has been viewed as a potential venue

Exploring The Role Of Schema Development And Its Impact Within The Digital Vocabulary Application Quizlet

    Get PDF
The purpose of this action research study was to ascertain the possible impact of using schema development strategies and the digital application Quizlet on student learning perspectives and achievement in a mid-level social studies classroom. U.S. schools are highly influenced by state standardized testing based on standards-driven curriculum that reinforces basic recall and recognition. School curriculum should be focused on higherlevel thinking skills such as critical thinking, social negotiation, and self-directed learning. The identified problem of practice of this study explored and described the use of technology at a basic level. Students are exploiting technology by copying and pasting information instead of constructing their own knowledge. Students are relying on rote memorization instead of using strategies that promote the construction of new schemata. The study was conducted in my seventh-grade iCivics classes in a large southeastern middle school through collaborative groups that fostered social negotiation. In the study, students constructed their own learning by using schema development strategies that would then be used when required to think critically on summative assessments. Specifically, students constructed their own learning using the teacher-modeled schemadeveloping strategies and used the flashcard-making application Quizlet as a note taking device to provide evidence of their newly acquired higher-level thinking. Students also used Quizlet as a formative tool to become self-directed learners. Students’ perspectives on the use of Quizlet and its impact on their academic success were also explored. Quantitative and Qualitative data were collected in the forms of a pilot study, informal interviews, pre- and posttest, pre- and post surveys, and summative test
