Comment on "Topological stability of the half-vortices in spinor exciton-polariton condensates"

We show that recent paper by Flayac et al. [Phys. Rev. B 81, 045318 (2010) and arXiv:0911.1650] is misleading. We demonstrate the existence of static half-quantum vortices in exciton-polariton condensates and calculate the warping of their polarization texture produced by TE-TM splitting of polariton band.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure. Vortices in exciton-polariton condensates with polarization splitting

The presence of polarization splitting of exciton-polariton branches in planar semiconductor microcavities has a pronounced effect on vortices in polariton condensates. We show that the TE-TM splitting leads to the coupling between the left and right half-vortices (vortices in the right and left circular components of the condensate), that otherwise do not interact. We analyze also the effect of linear polarization pinning resulted from a fixed splitting between two perpendicular linear polarizations. In this case, half-vortices acquire strings (solitons) attached to them. The half-vortices with strings can be detected by observing the interference fringes of light emitted from the cavity in two circular polarizations. The string affects the fringes in both polarizations. Namely, the half-vortex is characterized by an asymmetric fork-like dislocation in one circular polarization; the fringes in the other circular polarization are continuous, but they are shifted by crossing the string.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figs, Optics of Excitons in Confined Systems 11 (Madrid, 7-11 september 2009

Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha Levels In Blood Cord Is Directly Correlated With The Body Weight Of Mothers

Obesity has emerged as major public health problem leading to increased morbidity and mortality. Epidemiological studies indicate that in many regions of the world, children and teenagers are increasingly affected by obesity, which contributes for a pessimistic projection for the near future. Maternal obesity has been implicated in metabolic disorders of the offspring, but there are no biological markers that can be detected early on life that predict the development of obesity in the offspring. Objective To evaluate the expression of inflammatory markers in the umbilical cord blood of babies of mothers with obesity/overweight, and correlate these markers with the body weight at age 9 months. Methods Anthropometric data of mothers and babies were obtained during prenatal evaluation, at birth and 9 months after birth. Cord blood was collected during delivery of 54 babies from mothers with obesity/overweight and of 50 babies from lean mothers. Tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), transforming growth factor 1 beta, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 and 2 (MCP-1/MCP-2) were determined in serum samples using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay methods. Correlations were evaluated using the Spearman correlation coefficient, and comparisons were evaluated using the non-parametric Mann-Whitney U-test. Results Cord blood TNF-a was positively correlated with maternal body mass index. There was an inverse correlation between cord blood transforming growth factor 1 beta and baby body weight at birth. There was no biological marker that predicted body weight at age 9 months. Conclusion Although we have not found a biological marker to predict increased body weight at 9 months of age, the study shows that maternal obesity exposes the baby to higher TNF-a level in the early stages of life, and this can affect metabolic and inflammatory parameters during adulthood.2221021

An Integrated Assessment and Management Optimization System for Grazinglands

Rangelands and pasturelands are often assessed using different methodologies. The Interpreting Indicators of Rangeland Health and Pasture Condition Scoring methodologies, two techniques used widely across the USA, were developed for rangelands and pasturelands respectively. These two grazingland assessment techniques were determined to be complementary and if integrated could provide an optimized approach to measure grazinglands without regards to specific use (i.e. range or pasture). We present an improved grazingland assessment protocol that merges indicators and attributes from Interpreting Indicators of Rangeland Health and Pasture Condition Scoring methodologies. This Integrated Grazingland Assessment (IGA) approach allows evaluators to assess site conditions and to make interpretations regarding management based on site-specific attributes (soil and site stability, hydrologic function, biotic integrity) that can potentially optimize the ecological potential and livestock carrying capacity of a site. The IGA provides a way of detecting changes in these ecological attributes relative to a site\u27s ecological potential. The IGA can also inform land managers about the utility of an area for livestock production or factors that could be keeping the area from operating at its full productive potential, while accounting for the different management objectives (e.g. increase productivity while maintaining native rangeland, optimizing seed mixes to improve planted pasture productivity) for the grazinglands where these methods are usually applied

Forgetful maps between Deligne-Mostow ball quotients

We study forgetful maps between Deligne-Mostow moduli spaces of weighted points on P^1, and classify the forgetful maps that extend to a map of orbifolds between the stable completions. The cases where this happens include the Livn\'e fibrations and the Mostow/Toledo maps between complex hyperbolic surfaces. They also include a retraction of a 3-dimensional ball quotient onto one of its 1-dimensional totally geodesic complex submanifolds
