Fluctuation conductivity in superconductors in strong electric fields
We study the effect of a strong electric field on the fluctuation
conductivity within the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory for the case of
arbitrary dimension. Our results are based on the analytical derivation of the
velocity distribution law for the fluctuation Cooper pairs, from the Boltzmann
equation. Special attention is drawn to the case of small nonlinearity of
conductivity, which can be investigated experimentally. We obtain a general
relation between the nonlinear conductivity and the temperature derivative of
the linear Aslamazov-Larkin conductivity, applicable to any superconductor. For
the important case of layered superconductors we derive an analogous relation
between the small nonlinear correction for the conductivity and the
fluctuational magnetoconductivity. On the basis of these relations we provide
new experimental methods for determining both the lifetime constant of
metastable Cooper pairs above T_c and the coherence length. A systematic
investigation of the 3rd harmonic of the electric field generated by a harmonic
current can serve as an alternative method for the examination of the
metastable Cooper-pair relaxation time.Comment: 18 pages, REVTeX, submitted to Phys. Rev.
An axiomatic approach to the non-linear theory of generalized functions and consistency of Laplace transforms
We offer an axiomatic definition of a differential algebra of generalized
functions over an algebraically closed non-Archimedean field. This algebra is
of Colombeau type in the sense that it contains a copy of the space of Schwartz
distributions. We study the uniqueness of the objects we define and the
consistency of our axioms. Next, we identify an inconsistency in the
conventional Laplace transform theory. As an application we offer a free of
contradictions alternative in the framework of our algebra of generalized
functions. The article is aimed at mathematicians, physicists and engineers who
are interested in the non-linear theory of generalized functions, but who are
not necessarily familiar with the original Colombeau theory. We assume,
however, some basic familiarity with the Schwartz theory of distributions.Comment: 23 page
Polarization transfer in the d(epol,e' ppol)n reaction up to Q^2=1.61 (GeV/c)^2
The recoil proton polarization was measured in the d(epol,e' ppol)n reaction
in Hall A of the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab). The
electron kinematics were centered on the quasielastic peak (x_{Bj}~1) and
included three values of the squared four-momentum transfer, Q^2=0.43, 1.00 and
1.61 (GeV/c)^2. For Q^2=0.43 and 1.61 (GeV/c)^2, the missing momentum, p_m, was
centered at zero while for Q^2=1.00 (GeV/c)^2 two values of p_m were chosen: 0
and 174 MeV/c. At low p_m, the Q^2 dependence of the longitudinal polarization,
P_z', is not well described by a state-of-the-art calculation. Further, at
higher p_m, a 3.5 sigma discrepancy was observed in the transverse
polarization, P_x'. Understanding the origin of these discrepancies is
important in order to confidently extract the neutron electric form factor from
the analogous d(epol,e' npol)p experiment.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures; updated text, figures and table
Ventricular beat detection in single channel electrocardiograms
BACKGROUND: Detection of QRS complexes and other types of ventricular beats is a basic component of ECG analysis. Many algorithms have been proposed and used because of the waves' shape diversity. Detection in a single channel ECG is important for several applications, such as in defibrillators and specialized monitors. METHODS: The developed heuristic algorithm for ventricular beat detection includes two main criteria. The first of them is based on steep edges and sharp peaks evaluation and classifies normal QRS complexes in real time. The second criterion identifies ectopic beats by occurrence of biphasic wave. It is modified to work with a delay of one RR interval in case of long RR intervals. Other algorithm branches classify already detected QRS complexes as ectopic beats if a set of wave parameters is encountered or the ratio of latest two RR intervals RR(i-1)/RR(i )is less than 1:2.5. RESULTS: The algorithm was tested with the AHA and MIT-BIH databases. A sensitivity of 99.04% and a specificity of 99.62% were obtained in detection of 542014 beats. CONCLUSION: The algorithm copes successfully with different complicated cases of single channel ventricular beat detection. It is aimed to simulate to some extent the experience of the cardiologist, rather than to rely on mathematical approaches adopted from the theory of signal analysis. The algorithm is open to improvement, especially in the part concerning the discrimination between normal QRS complexes and ectopic beats
Search for pentaquark in high statistics measurement of at CLAS
The exclusive reaction was studied in the
photon energy range between 1.6-3.8 GeV searching for evidence of the exotic
baryon . The decay to requires the assignment of
strangeness to any observed resonance. Data were collected with the CLAS
detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility corresponding to
an integrated luminosity of 70 . No evidence for the
pentaquark was found. Upper limits were set on the production cross section as
function of center-of-mass angle and mass. The 95% CL upper limit on the
total cross section for a narrow resonance at 1540 MeV was found to be 0.8 nb.Comment: Submitted to Physical Review Letter
The ratio of proton's electric to magnetic form factors measured by polarization transfer
The ratio of the proton's elastic electromagnetic form factors was obtained
by measuring the transverse and longitudinal polarizations of recoiling protons
from the elastic scattering of polarized electrons with unpolarized protons.
The ratio of the electric to magnetic form factor is proportional to the ratio
of the transverse to longitudinal recoil polarizations. The ratio was measured
over a range of four-momentum transfer squared between 0.5 and 3.5 GeV-squared.
Simultaneous measurement of transverse and longitudinal polarizations in a
polarimeter provides good control of the systematic uncertainty. The results
for the ratio of the proton's electric to magnetic form factors show a
systematic decrease with increasing four momentum squared, indicating for the
first time a marked difference in the spatial distribution of charge and
magnetization currents in the proton.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, version of paper after corrections due to

New Measurement of Parity Violation in Elastic Electron-Proton Scattering and Implications for Strange Form Factors
We have measured the parity-violating electroweak asymmetry in the elastic
scattering of polarized electrons from the proton. The result is A = -15.05 +-
0.98(stat) +- 0.56(syst) ppm at the kinematic point theta_lab = 12.3 degrees
and Q^2 = 0.477 (GeV/c)^2. The measurement implies that the value for the
strange form factor (G_E^s + 0.392 G_M^s) = 0.025 +- 0.020 +- 0.014, where the
first error is experimental and the second arises from the uncertainties in
electromagnetic form factors. This measurement is the first fixed-target parity
violation experiment that used either a `strained' GaAs photocathode to produce
highly polarized electrons or a Compton polarimeter to continuously monitor the
electron beam polarization.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, Tex, elsart.cls; revised version as accepted for

Light Vector Mesons in the Nuclear Medium
The light vector mesons (, , and ) were produced in
deuterium, carbon, titanium, and iron targets in a search for possible
in-medium modifications to the properties of the meson at normal nuclear
densities and zero temperature. The vector mesons were detected with the CEBAF
Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) via their decays to . The rare
leptonic decay was chosen to reduce final-state interactions. A combinatorial
background was subtracted from the invariant mass spectra using a
well-established event-mixing technique. The meson mass spectrum was
extracted after the and signals were removed in a nearly
model-independent way. Comparisons were made between the mass spectra
from the heavy targets () with the mass spectrum extracted from the
deuterium target. With respect to the -meson mass, we obtain a small
shift compatible with zero. Also, we measure widths consistent with standard
nuclear many-body effects such as collisional broadening and Fermi motion.Comment: 15 pages, 18 figures, 3 table
Deeply virtual and exclusive electroproduction of omega mesons
The exclusive omega electroproduction off the proton was studied in a large
kinematical domain above the nucleon resonance region and for the highest
possible photon virtuality (Q2) with the 5.75 GeV beam at CEBAF and the CLAS
spectrometer. Cross sections were measured up to large values of the
four-momentum transfer (-t < 2.7 GeV2) to the proton. The contributions of the
interference terms sigma_TT and sigma_TL to the cross sections, as well as an
analysis of the omega spin density matrix, indicate that helicity is not
conserved in this process. The t-channel pi0 exchange, or more generally the
exchange of the associated Regge trajectory, seems to dominate the reaction
gamma* p -> omega p, even for Q2 as large as 5 GeV2. Contributions of handbag
diagrams, related to Generalized Parton Distributions in the nucleon, are
therefore difficult to extract for this process. Remarkably, the high-t
behaviour of the cross sections is nearly Q2-independent, which may be
interpreted as a coupling of the photon to a point-like object in this
kinematical limit.Comment: 15 pages,19 figure
First measurement of coherent -meson photoproduction on deuteron at low energies
The cross section and decay angular distributions for the coherent \phi meson
photoproduction on the deuteron have been measured for the first time up to a
squared four-momentum transfer t =(p_{\gamma}-p_{\phi})^2 =-2 GeV^2/c^2, using
the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The
cross sections are compared with predictions from a re-scattering model. In a
framework of vector meson dominance, the data are consistent with the total
\phi-N cross section \sigma_{\phi N} at about 10 mb. If vector meson dominance
is violated, a larger \sigma_{\phi N} is possible by introducing larger t-slope
for the \phi N \to \phi N process than that for the \gamma N \to \phi N
process. The decay angular distributions of the \phi are consistent with
helicity conservation.Comment: 6 page
