    Effect of N, P & K on Fruiting, Yield and Fruit Quality in Guava cv. Pant Prabhat

    Response of various combinations of NPK on fruiting, yield and fruit quality were studied in guava cv. Pant Prabhat in a field experiment, over two years. Treatments comprised of three different levels of nitrogen (0, 75 and 150g/plant/year), phosphorus (0, 50 and 100g P2O5/plant/year) and potassium (0, 75 and 150g K2O/plant/ year) in all the possible 27 combinations. Treatments with higher nitrogen level attained maximum yield and fruiting compared to treatments with lower nitrogen levels, in combination with phosphorus and potassium. Maximum yield of 69.64, 60.72 kg/plant and 22.66, 26.35 kg/plant, and, fruit set of 73.23%, 75.07%, 34.73% and 35.65% were recorded with 150g N, 50g P2O5 and 75g K2O/plant/year in the rainy and winter seasons in both years, respectively, while treatment combinations with high potassium level recorded higher ascorbic acid and sugar content in the fruit

    Objective: Clerodendrum serratum (L.) belonging to family Verbenaceae, commonly known as Bharangi, is a popular plant across various communities of India. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is a unique technique to prospect various volatile principles and semivolatile compounds.Materials and Methods: The phytoconstituents present in the root of n-hexane extract were evaluated by GC-MS using Clarus 500 mass spectrometer.Results and Discussions: A total of 15 constituents were identified and characterized from the roots of C. serratum L. All the 15 compounds were tabulated with their retention time, percentage peak area, molecular formula, molecular weight, and Chemical Abstracts Service number. Out of all the compounds, 60% comprises the oxygenated compounds. Compound hexadecanoic acid, methyl ester, and benzene, 1,3-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl) showed highest percentage about 6.5 and 74.9, respectively.Conclusion: This study showed the presence of 15 compounds ranging from alkane, alkene as longest chain along with ester, aromatic and nonaromatic hydrocarbons

    EVALUATION OF IN VITRO- ANTI-OXIDANT POTENTIAL OF AQUEOUS ROOT EXTRACT OF CLERODENDRUM SERRATUM L.

    Objective: The intent  of this report  was to investigate the effect of aqueous root extract of Clerodendrum serratum L. for antioxidant activity using divergent models viz. DPPH scavenging assay, Superoxide scavenging assay and Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP) assay.Materials and Methods: The root of C. serratum was extracted using water. The yield of aqueous extract was 10%w/w. The outcome was examined statistically by the regression method.Results and discussions: The IC50 values are 85.43 µg/ml and 107.59 µg/ml for DPPH radical scavenging and Superoxide scavenging assay respectively whereas  FRAP showed significant reducing power activity with increased concentration of sample. The pilot study showed, a significant correlation existed between concentrations of the extract and percentage engrossment of free radicals.Conclusion: The antioxidant property may be corresponding to the polyphenols and flavonoids adjacent in the extract. These results clearly revealed that C. serratum might be effective against diseases analogous with free radical mediated. Keywords Clerodendrum serratum, DPPH, Superoxide, FRAP, Rutin, Antioxidan

    The incidence and management of hypotension in the pregnant parturients undergoing caesarean section following spinal anaesthesia with 0.5% bupivacaine

    Background: Spinal anesthesia for cesarean section is not a 100% successful technique. At times, despite straightforward insertion and drug administration, intrathecal anaesthesia for cesarean section fails to obtain any sensory or motor block.Methods: This study is aimed at comparing the incidence of hypotension and the need for vasopressors in patients submitted to caesarean section under spinal anaesthesia following preload with either crystalloid or colloid. This study was carried out on 100 healthy pregnant women with single term foetus and not in labor admitted at the labor room of Gynecological department of RIMS. Blood pressure, Pulse rate, O2 Saturation and episodes of hypotension were recorded every 5 minutes from the spinal block.Results: The study showed that maximum number of caesarean sections here performed for the indication of foetal distress which is seen in 44%, 48%, 52%, and 48% in Group A, Group B, Group C and Group D respectively. This is followed by scar tenderness and obstructed labour. In Group A maximum number of patients developed hypotension during 11-20 minutes duration which is 13 (61.9%) followed by 5 (23.8%) patients during first 10 minutes.Conclusions: The study concludes that the combined use of volume preloading to compensate for vasodilatation and vasopressor to counteract arterial dilatation is a very effective method in reducing the incidence, severity and duration of spiral hypotension. The combination group with decreased volume of preload and reduced dose of vasoconstrictor provides better haemodynamic stability when compared to preloading of vasoconstrictors alone

    Correlates of Social, Demographic and Behavioral Factors affecting Adolescent Sexuality in a Traditional Society in India: Perspectives and Challenges

    Background: Adolescent risk behavior is a major concern.Objectives: The study assessed the effect of school background, personal, social and other deviant behavior on school going adolescent sexual behavior. Material and Methods: The sample covered 3069 randomly selected adolescents (students) from 9th to 12th standard in various governments, private and missionary run schools from two districts namely; Aizawl being state capital and Champhai being distant under developed district.Summary: School background, leisure and entertainment practices, influence of taking alcohol, tobacco, drug, peer influence were found to be the major risk factor for indulgence in unsafe sex practices among adolescents. About 10% accepted involvement in premarital sex and majority of them (70%) of them had premarital sex between age group 15-19 years. The schools lacked in organizing awareness program and counseling activities on consequences of adolescent sex. The ARSH Program needs to synergize with school health program for desired results. Conclusions: Adolescent sexual risk behavior is a part of overall deviant behavior and can be managed in holistic manner

    Biofortification of Rice, An Impactful Strategy for Nutritional Security: Current Perspectives and Future Prospect

    Globally, especially in the developing world, an estimated 20,000 million people are affected by micronutrient deficiency, generally named “hidden hunger.” Crop biofortification is an impactful strategy in addressing nutritional security as well as providing a cost-saving, sustainable means by uplifting health and well-being to communities with deprived access to diversified foods and interventions regarding the micronutrient supply. Considering the global concerns about micronutrient deficiency, research organizations have initiated studies on ensuring the bioavailability of micronutrients in staple food crops. Mitigating hidden hunger with the biofortification of rice surely can be a beneficial strategy for people who consumes rice as a staple food. Significant enhancement in iron and zinc levels, as well as with other essential minerals and vitamins is achieved in rice biofortification by various approaches. Adoption of biofortified rice varieties in targeted countries would significantly increase daily micronutrient intake and help to holistically alleviate malnutrition in human populations. This review articulates the status and perspective of rice biofortification as well as summarizes dissemination and adoption along with trends in consumer acceptance. With a positive trend, attention should now need shift to an action-based agenda and robust policy directives for scaling up rice biofortification in improving nutritional security for humans
