Maurice Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin: Human emotions, grief, and the history of the Tombeau

Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) dedicated Le Tombeau de Couperin (1914-1917) to 17th-century French music and his friends who died in World War I. Although the work has an elegiac purpose, its music does not correlate with the common characteristic of an elegiac work. This document investigates the elegiac aspect of this work through the scope of psychoanalysis, philosophy, and the theory of musical equilibration. The first chapter briefly discusses the history of the Tombeau in 17th-century French literature and music. The second chapter compares Ravel\u27s Le Tombeau de Couperin to three pieces titled Tombeau written by Johann Froberger (1616-1667), Louis Couperin (1626-1661), and Jean Henry D\u27Anglebert (1629-1691) in order to demonstrate Ravel\u27s Le Tombeau stands out from those of the 17th century. As preparation for chapter four, the third chapter dwells on the relationship between music and human emotions and three theories attempting to explain this relationship. Chapter four demonstrates how different musical elements from Ravel\u27s Le Tombeau de Couperin evoke feelings of mourning and consolation. In conclusion, understanding how different musical elements from each movement of Ravel\u27s Le Tombeau elicit mourning and consolation changes how one listens to and performs this fascinating work

De-constructing terracotta female figurines: A chalcolithic case-study

We report the results of detailed imaging studies of the inner structure of a terracotta female figurine dated to the 6th millennium BC, most probably from the Lakes region of Turkey, now kept at the Nati- onal Museum of Oriental Art \u201cGiuseppe Tucci\u201d, Rome. The figurine was investigated with advanced CT scanning, recording 966 transversal sections. Each section was stratigraphically interpreted and digitized, reconstructing in three dimensions the form and mode of application of each lump or slab under the potter\u2019s fingers. A review of the available information on the techniques of construction of prehistoric terracotta figurines in Eurasia reveals at least two diverging technical templates, here named core and dual forming processes. The structure of the investigated figurine and its operational sequence reveals a version of the dual technical template, confirming the presence and influence, at a cognitive level, of organic analogies and a possible map of the female body in the modelling process

Akuntansi Pertanggungjawaban sebagai Alat Pengendalian Manajemen terhadap Penilaian Prestasi Kerja

Perkembangan dunia bisnis semakin berkembang pesat di lihat dari teknologi yang semakin canggih, ilmu pengetahuan yang berkembang sangat pesat serta persaingan bisnis yang semakin kuat. Pertumbuhan dan persaingan dunia bisnis dewasa ini mengharuskan Perusahaan untuk memandang jauh ke depan guna mengantisipasi berbagai kemungkinan yang dapat mempengaruhi perkembangan Perusahaannya. Salah satu cara yang ditempuh untuk mengatasi hal tersebut, Perusahaan menerapkan akuntansi pertanggungjawaban. Dengan diterapkannya sistem akuntansi pertanggungjawaban yang baik akan menyebabkan terciptanya suatu pengendalian dan pengukuran prestasi kerja.Penelitian dilakukan pada PT. X yang terletak di Jalan Komplek Ilir Barat Permai Blok D 2 No. 08, Lt. II Palembang. Maksud dari penelitian ini adalah untuk memperoleh bukti empirik peranan sistem akuntansi pertanggungjawaban sebagai alat pengendalian manajemen didalam Perusahaan. Sedangkan tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui peranan sistem akuntansi pertanggungjawaban, menganalisis pelaksanaan akuntansi pertanggungjawaban, dan menganalisis sistem akuntansi pertanggungjawaban dapat digunakan untuk menilai prestasi kerja.Metode yang digunakan penulis dalam penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif analitis, yaitu suatu metode yang dilakukan dengan cara mengumpulkan, menyusun, menganalisis, dan menginterprestasikan data sehingga dapat memberikan gambaran atau keadaan objek peneliti secara nyata untuk kemudian ditarik kesimpulan yang dijadikan dasar untuk mengajukan saran perbaikan bagi objek yang diteliti.Dari hasil penelitian dan pembahasan, dapat ditarik kesimpulan bahwa akuntansi pertanggungjawaban sebagai alat pengendalian manajemen sangat berperan terhadap penilaian prestasi kerja pada PT. X. Hasil hipotesis menunjukkan sebesar 75,07 % bahwa hipotesis diterima (Ho = diterima).Saran penulis bagi PT. X yaitu: (1) secara keseluruhan Perusahaan baik dalam penerapan akuntansi pertanggungjawaban tetapi perlu diperhatikan penilaian prestasi kerja, (2) melihat pentingnya akuntansi pertanggungjawaban, Perusahaan ini seharusnya mempunyai kecenderungan untuk menerapkan semua tahapan kegiatan dalam pusat pertanggungjawaban, (3) Perusahaan ini harus lebih memperhatikan penyusunan anggaran baik penyusunan laporan pertanggungjawaban dimana harus disertakan penyimpangan biaya jika memang terjadi penyimpangan didalam Perusahaan tersebut, dan (4) untuk meningkatkan prestasi kerja, perlu adanya peningkatan kualitas pekerjaan yaitu dengan cara meningkatkan akurasi, ketelitian, penampilan dan output dari pekerjaan

Rapidly Rotating Fermi Gases

We show that the density profile of a Fermi gas in rapidly rotating potential will develop prominent features reflecting the underlying Landau level like energy spectrum. Two-component Bose-Einstein Condensates with Large Number of Vortices

We consider the condensate wavefunction of a rapidly rotating two-component Bose gas with an equal number of particles in each component. If the interactions between like and unlike species are very similar (as occurs for two hyperfine states of $^{87}$Rb or $^{23}$Na) we find that the two components contain identical rectangular vortex lattices, where the unit cell has an aspect ratio of $\sqrt{3}$, and one lattice is displaced to the center of the unit cell of the other. Running anti-de Sitter radius from QCD-like strings

We consider renormalization effects for a bosonic QCD-like string, whose partons have $1/p^{2}$ propagators instead of Gaussian. Classically this model resembles (the bosonic part of) the projective light-cone (zero-radius) limit of a string on an AdS${}_5$ background, where Schwinger parameters give rise to the fifth dimension. Quantum effects generate dynamics for this dimension, producing an AdS${}_5$ background with a running radius.
