Operational Discord Measure for Gaussian States with Gaussian Measurements
We introduce an operational discord-type measure for quantifying nonclassical
correlations in bipartite Gaussian states based on using Gaussian measurements.
We refer to this measure as operational Gaussian discord (OGD). It is defined
as the difference between the entropies of two conditional probability
distributions associated to one subsystem, which are obtained by performing
optimal local and joint Gaussian measurements. We demonstrate the operational
significance of this measure in terms of a Gaussian quantum protocol for
extracting maximal information about an encoded classical signal. As examples,
we calculate OGD for several Gaussian states in the standard form.Comment: 18 pages, 3 figure
Sufficient Conditions for Efficient Classical Simulation of Quantum Optics
We provide general sufficient conditions for the efficient classical
simulation of quantum-optics experiments that involve inputting states to a
quantum process and making measurements at the output. The first condition is
based on the negativity of phase-space quasiprobability distributions (PQDs) of
the output state of the process and the output measurements; the second one is
based on the negativity of PQDs of the input states, the output measurements,
and the transition function associated with the process. We show that these
conditions provide useful practical tools for investigating the effects of
imperfections in implementations of boson sampling. In particular, we apply our
formalism to boson-sampling experiments that use single-photon or
spontaneous-parametric-down-conversion sources and on-off photodetectors.
Considering simple models for loss and noise, we show that above some threshold
for the probability of random counts in the photodetectors, these
boson-sampling experiments are classically simulatable. We identify mode
mismatching as the major source of error contributing to random counts and
suggest that this is the chief challenge for implementations of boson sampling

Verification of quantum discord
We introduce a measurement-based method for verifying quantum discord of any
bipartite quantum system. We show that by performing an informationally
complete POVM (IC-POVM) on one subsystem and checking the commutativity of the
conditional states of the other subsystem, quantum discord from the second
subsystem to the first can be verified. This is an improvement upon previous
methods, which enables us to efficiently apply our method to
continuous-variable systems, as IC-POVMs are readily available from homodyne or
heterodyne measurements. We show that quantum discord for Gaussian states can
be verified by checking whether the peaks of the conditional Wigner functions
corresponding to two different outcomes of heterodyne measurement coincide at
the same point in the phase space. Using this method, we also prove that the
only Gaussian states with zero discord are product states; hence, Gaussian
states with Gaussian discord have nonzero quantum discord.Comment: 5 page
Potential predictors of outcome in patients with tissue loss who undergo infrainguinal vein bypass grafting
AbstractPurpose: Aggressive attempts at limb salvage in patients with ischemic tissue loss are justified by favorable initial results in most patients. The identification of patients whose conditions will not benefit from attempted revascularization remains difficult. Methods: This study was designed as a retrospective review of prospectively collected clinical data. The subjects were 210 consecutive patients who underwent infrainguinal vein bypass grafting for ischemic tissue loss in the setting of an academic medical center. Bypass grafting was to the popliteal artery in 56 patients, to the infrapopliteal arteries in 131 patients, and to the pedal arteries in 23 patients. The follow-up examination was complete in 209 of 210 patients. One hundred twenty-five patients underwent blinded review of duplex scan venous mapping and arteriography to determine simplified vein and run-off scores. The outcome measures were the influence of risk factors, venous conduit, and runoff on mortality, limb loss, and graft failure at the 6-month follow-up examination. Results: One hundred seventy patients (81%) were alive and had limb salvage. Nineteen patients (9.1%) died, with need for a simultaneous inflow procedure and end-stage renal disease being most commonly associated with mortality. Thirty-three patients (15.8%) had undergone amputation: 18 after graft failure, and 15 for progressive tissue loss despite a patent graft. Amputation was significantly more common in patients with diabetes (P = .05) and with poor runoff scores (poor runoff, 44.4% vs good runoff, 7.4%; P < .01). Amputation despite a patent graft also correlated with runoff (poor runoff, 41.7% vs good runoff, 4.3%; P < .01). Twenty-five patients had graft failure without amputation, so that only 145 patients (69.4%) were alive, had limb salvage, and had a patent graft. Run-off score was the strongest predictor of outcome, with 70% of patients with poor run-off scores having death, amputation, or graft failure. Conclusion: Aggressive use of infrainguinal vein bypass grafting in patients with ischemic tissue loss results in a high rate of initial limb salvage but significant morbidity and mortality. Arteriographically determined runoff scores appear to potentially identify patients at high risk for a poor initial outcome and may provide a method of selecting patients for primary amputation. The development, design and characterisation of a scale model horizontal axis tidal turbine for dynamic load quantification
The paper describes the development and characterisation of three 0.9 m diameter lab-scale Horizontal Axis Tidal Turbines. The blade development process has been outlined and was used to generate a design specification. Each turbine houses instrumentation to measure rotor thrust, torque and blade root bending moments on each blade, in both `flapwise' and `edgewise' directions. A permanent magnet synchronous machine and encoder are integrated to allow for servo-control of the turbine as well as to provide position and rotational velocity measurements, resulting in three turbines that can be individually controlled using speed or torque control. Analogue signals are captured via a real-time operating system and field programmable gate array hardware architecture facilitating sample rates of up to 2 kHz. Results from testing the pilot turbine at three differing facilities during the development process are presented. Here good agreement, less than 7% variation, was found when comparing the testing undertaken at various flume and tow tank facilities. Lastly, the findings of a test campaign to characterise the performance of each of the three turbines are presented. Very good agreement in non-dimensional values for each of the three manufactured turbines was found
Upper Ordovician hardgrounds – from localized surfaces to global biogeochemical events
Upper Ordovician hardgrounds display a spectrum of complexity reflecting a range of local to global-scale processes. Hardgrounds are cemented seafloor surfaces typically marked by the presence of encrusting taxa and borings. Many hardgrounds show evidence for successive episodes of colonization by hard substrate specialists and are associated with localized evidence of seafloor erosion such as overhangs and reworked concretions. They commonly show trace amounts of pyrite and dolomite cements indicating an association with sulfate reduction. The most widespread hardgrounds are highly complex and unravelling their history provides insights into global biogeochemical events.
The Curdsville and Kirkfield hardgrounds in the Appalachian Basin (Kentucky and Ontario) represent relatively simple end members of the hardground spectrum. They covered 10s to 100s km2 and formed relatively quickly during the early Katian. They display both planar to subplanar and hummocky to topographically complex surfaces (cm-scale) and contain highly diverse encrusting echinoderm faunas. Study of these surfaces yields important insights into the evolutionary history of encrusting communities.
By contrast, the slightly younger hardground at the top of the Galena Group (Ka1) is a surface that is present throughout most of the Midcontinent Basin (>7.5 à 105km2). It is an example of a highly complex surface that was repeatedly modified by erosion and mineralization. Near the eastern margin of the basin in Indiana, the capping Galena hardground is pinnacled with cavity-filling sharpstone clasts, phosphate grains and bored crusts, iron ooids, and pyritic impregnated surfaces. It is onlapped by graptolitic shales of the Kope Formation (Fm) (Ka1) indicating an unconformity of approximately 1 m.y. To the west, in Illinois, the Kope Fm is erosionally truncated and the hardground is directly overlain by graptolitic shales of the Waynesville Fm (Ka3), where the unconformity expands to nearly 4 m.y. Toward Iowa, the hardground is onlapped by meters of phosphorite. Taken together, these observations reveal that the capping Galena Group hardground reflects a complicated history of repeated subaerial exposure, karsting, and marine flooding by a dysoxic to anoxic water mass with fluctuating redox conditions, similar to the age equivalent hardground at the base of the Fjäcka Shale in the Baltic Basin.
Thus, hardground studies provide important insights for resolving the temporal continuity of the Upper Ordovician rock record and unravelling processes that controlled carbonate precipitation and dissolution and the evolution of sea floor communities. Some simple hardgrounds may have formed through random exhumation of cemented sediments on the sea floor through the effects of storm scour. However, their clustering into certain portions of the Upper Ordovician suggests that processes that affected sea water chemistry may also be involved. The most complex surfaces reflect major environmental perturbations with large amplitude sea level oscillations and redox changes that in some cases generated rare-earth enriched phosphorites
Preclinical development of a bispecific TNFα/IL-23 neutralising domain antibody as a novel oral treatment for inflammatory bowel disease.
Anti-TNFα and anti-IL-23 antibodies are highly effective therapies for Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis in a proportion of patients. V56B2 is a novel bispecific domain antibody in which a llama-derived IL-23p19-specific domain antibody, humanised and engineered for intestinal protease resistance, V900, was combined with a previously-described TNFα-specific domain antibody, V565. V56B2 contains a central protease-labile linker to create a single molecule for oral administration. Incubation of V56B2 with trypsin or human faecal supernatant resulted in a complete separation of the V565 and V900 monomers without loss of neutralising potency. Following oral administration of V900 and V565 in mice, high levels of each domain antibody were detected in the faeces, demonstrating stability in the intestinal milieu. In ex vivo cultures of colonic biopsies from IBD patients, treatment with V565 or V900 inhibited tissue phosphoprotein levels and with a combination of the two, inhibition was even greater. These results support further development of V56B2 as an oral therapy for IBD with improved safety and efficacy in a greater proportion of patients as well as greater convenience for patients compared with traditional monoclonal antibody therapies

The Western Pacific barred knifejaw, Oplegnathus fasciatus (Temminck & Schlegel, 1844) (Pisces: Oplegnathidae), arriving with tsunami debris on the Pacific coast of North America
The Western Pacific Ocean barred knifejaw Oplegnathus fasciatus was found from 2013 to 2015 along the Pacific Coast of North America from Washington to California. The knifejaw was found in derelict vessels that had arrived on the Pacific Coast and that had been lost during the March 2011 Great Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. Knifejaw were also found free living in the wild in regions known to have received Japanese tsunami marine debris. No previous records of O. fasciatus are known east of the Hawaiian Archipelago.
