    Elucidating oncogenic pathways in prostate cancer is an arduous task. In this issue of Cancer Cell, Yu and colleagues show that repression of Adrenergic Receptor Beta-2 gene expression by Enhancer of Zeste 2 results in acquisition of transforming activities. It is interesting that these activities point to a role for GTPases as important regulators of transformation in prostate cancer cells. They further implicate epithelial-mesenchymal transition as a biologic end point in this process. Overall, on the basis of their findings, the authors nominate a novel oncogenic pathway for prostate cancer that deserves critical thought and attention

    Identification of a novel prostate cancer biomarker, caveolin-1: Implications and potential clinical benefit

    While prostate cancer is a common disease in men, it is uncommonly life-threatening. To better understand this phenomenon, tumor biologists have sought to elucidate the mechanisms that contribute to the development of virulent prostate cancer. The recent discovery that caveolin-1 (Cav-1) functions as an important oncogene involved in prostate cancer progression reflects the success of this effort. Cav-1 is a major structural coat protein of caveolae, specialized plasma membrane invaginations involved in multiple cellular functions, including molecular transport, cell adhesion, and signal transduction. Cav-1 is aberrantly overexpressed in human prostate cancer, with higher levels evident in metastatic versus primary sites. Intracellular Cav-1 promotes cell survival through activation of Akt and enhancement of additional growth factor pro-survival pathways. Cav-1 is also secreted as a biologically active molecule that promotes cell survival and angiogenesis within the tumor microenvironment. Secreted Cav-1 can be reproducibly detected in peripheral blood using a sensitive and specific immunoassay. Cav-1 levels distinguish men with prostate cancer from normal controls, and preoperative Cav-1 levels predict which patients are at highest risk for relapse following radical prostatectomy for localized disease. Thus, secreted Cav-1 is a promising biomarker in identifying clinically significant prostate cancer

    Hard Burst Emission from the Soft Gamma Repeater SGR 1900+14

    We present evidence for burst emission from SGR 1900+14 with a power-law high energy spectrum extending beyond 500 keV. Unlike previous detections of high energy photons during bursts from SGRs, these emissions are not associated with high-luminosity burst intervals. Not only is the emission hard, but the spectra are better fit by Band's GRB function rather than by the traditional optically-thin thermal bremsstrahlung model. We find that the spectral evolution within these hard events obeys a hardness/intensity anti-correlation. Temporally, these events are distinct from typical SGR burst emissions in that they are longer (~ 1 s) and have relatively smooth profiles. Despite a difference in peak luminosity of > 1E+11 between these bursts from SGR 1900+14 and cosmological GRBs, there are striking temporal and spectral similarities between the two kinds of bursts, aside from spectral evolution.     Maximum entanglement of formation for a two-mode Gaussian state over passive operations

    We quantify the maximum amount of entanglement of formation (EoF) that can be achieved by continuous-variable states under passive operations, which we refer to as EoF-potential. Focusing, in particular, on two-mode Gaussian states we derive analytical expressions for the EoF-potential for specific classes of states. For more general states, we demonstrate that this quantity can be upper-bounded by the minimum amount of squeezing needed to synthesize the Gaussian modes, a quantity called squeezing of formation. Our work, thus, provides a new link between non-classicality of quantum states and the non-classicality of correlations.Comment: Revised versio

    High-sensitivity measurement of diverse vascular plant-derived biomarkers in high-altitude ice cores

The definitive version was published in Geophysical Research Letters 36 (2009): L13501, doi:10.1029/2009GL037643.Semi-volatile organic compounds derived from burned and fresh vascular plant sources and preserved in high-altitude ice fields were detected and identified through use of recently developed analytical tools. Specifically, stir bar sorptive extraction and thermal desorption coupled with gas chromatography/time-of-flight mass spectrometry allowed measurement of multiple biomarkers in small sample volumes (≤30 ml). Among other compounds of interest, several diterpenoids, which suggest inputs from conifers and conifer burning, were identified in post-industrial era and older Holocene ice from the Sajama site in the Bolivian Andes, but not in a glacial period sample, consistent with aridity changes. Differences in biomarker assemblages between sites support the use of these compounds as regionally constrained recorders of vegetation and climate change. This study represents the first application of these analytical techniques to ice core research and the first indication that records of vegetation fires may be reconstructed from diterpenoids in ice.This project was supported in part by NSF-OCE (0402533), and NSF-EAR (0094475)

    Identification and characterization of RTVP1/GLIPR1-like genes, a novel p53 target gene cluster

    AbstractOur previous finding of RTVP1 (GLIPR1) as a p53 target gene with tumor suppressor functions prompted us to initiate a genome-wide sequence homology search for RTVP1/GLIPR1-like (GLIPR1L) genes. In this study we report the identification and characterization of a novel p53 target gene cluster that includes human RTVP1 (hRTVP-1) together with two GLIPR1L genes (GLIPR1L1 and GLIPR1L2) on human chromosome 12q21 and mouse Rtvp1 (mRTVP-1 or Glipr1) together with three Glipr1-like (Glipr1l) genes on mouse chromosome 10D1. GLIPR1L1 has two and GLIPR1L2 has five differentially spliced isoforms. Protein homology search revealed that hRTVP-1 gene cluster members share a high degree of identity and homology. GLIPR1L1 is testis-specific, whereas GLIPR1L2 is expressed in different types of tissues, including prostate and bladder. Like hRTVP-1, GLIPR1L1 and GLIPR1L2 are p53 target genes. The similarities of these novel p53 target gene cluster members in protein structure and their association with p53 suggest that these genes may have similar biological functions

    Early Stage Breast Cancer and Its Association with Diet and Exercise-Related Perceptions and Behaviors to Prevent Recurrence

    Background The favorable prognosis for early stage breast cancer survivors may be a reason for the minimal research regarding their quality of life. Prior research has observed more long-term weight gain among early stage survivors compared to cancer-free women of a similar age. It would be useful to study survivors’ perceptions and reported behaviors regarding diet and exercise to see if there is a correlation with previous studies. Methods A sample of 700 breast cancer survivors from Ohio and Michigan was randomly selected from the Northwest Ohio affiliate of the Susan G. Komen For the Cure mailing list and sent a survey for completion. Results 389 survivors completed the survey and among Stage 1 (50/197 = 25.4%) and Stage 2 survivors (24/105 = 22.9%), a small proportion had a positive correlation between self-reported dietary behaviors and their perceived benefits of eating fruits and vegetables. Similar correlations were observed between their self-reported exercise behaviors and their perceived benefits of exercise (Stage 1: 36/197 = 18.3%, Stage 2: 18/105 = 17.1%). Conclusions Regardless of stage, a small proportion of survivors’ self-reported dietary and exercise behaviors match their perceived benefits of diet and exercise. Factors such as access, motivation, and lack of co-morbidities among early stage survivors may prevent them from living healthier post-diagnosis. More thorough dietary and clinical measurements will provide greater certainty. Thus, innovative, sustainable programs must be accessible and provide motivation and social support from family, friends, and other survivors to truly improve quality of life
