    On the Spatial Distribution of Hard X-Rays from Solar Flare Loops

    The aim of this paper is to investigate the spatial structure of the impulsive phase hard X-ray emission from solar flares. This work is motivated by the YOHKOH and the forthcoming HESSI observations. Summarizing past results, it is shown that the transport effects can account for the observations by inhomogeneous loops where there is a strong field convergence and/or density enhancement at the top of the flaring loop. Scattering by plasma turbulence at the acceleration site or pancake type pitch angle distribution of the accelerated electrons can also give rise to enhanced emission at the loop tops. These could be a natural consequence of acceleration by plasma waves. This paper considers a general case of stochastic scattering and acceleration that leads to an isotropic pitch angle distribution and an enhanced emission from the loop tops or the acceleration site. Following the formalism developed in earlier papers the strength and the spectrum of the radiation expected from the acceleration site and the foot points are evaluated and their dependence on the parameters describing the acceleration process and the flare plasma are determined. The theoretical ratio of these two intensities and relative values of their spectral indices are compared with the YOHKOH observations, demonstrating that the above mentioned parameters can be constrained with such observations. It is shown that future high spatial and spectral resolution observations, for example those expected from HESSI, can begin to distinguish between different models and constrain their parameters.Comment: 37 pages with 20 figures.     Resin treatment of free edges to aid certification of through thickness laminate strength

    Large aerospace parts are typically certified by testing narrow specimens, such as curved laminates, which have exposed free edges. These edges (not present in the production part) have been found to reduce the 3D strength of curved laminates by over 20%, showing this certification method is unreasonably conservative. The free edges also create a singularity, such that finite element (FE) modelling is challenging, which is typically approximated using non-linear analysis of cohesive interlaminar zones. A new treatment process is developed whereby a layer of resin is applied to the free edges of curved laminates. This significantly reduces the edge effect and delays failure. The resin edge treatment increases the strength of the curved laminate test specimens by 16%. The treatment also simplifies FE modelling by allowing for non-zero stresses normal to the laminate edge, removing the singularity. This enables use of linear FE models, which converge at the laminate edge. A linear FE method developed in this paper is conservative and predicts the strength of treated curved laminates to within 5% of the average test value. Hence it is shown that the resin edge treatment can be used to improve reliability of both certification tests and FE models

    An Untriggered Search for Optical Bursts

    We present an untriggered search for optical bursts with the ROTSE-I telephoto array. Observations were taken which monitor an effective 256 square degree field continuously over 125 hours to m_{ROTSE}=15.7. The uniquely large field, moderate limiting magnitude and fast cadence of \sim10 minutes permits transient searches in a new region of sensitivity. Our search reveals no candidate events. To quantify this result, we simulate potential optical bursts with peak magnitude, m_{p}, at t=10 s, which fade as f=(\frac{t}{t_{0}}) ^{\alpha_{t}}, where \alpha_t < 0. Simple estimates based on observational evidence indicate that a search of this sensitivity begins to probe the possible region occupied by GRB orphan afterglows. Our observing protocol and image sensitivity result in a broad region of high detection efficiency for light curves to the bright and slowly varying side of a boundary running from [\alpha_{t},m_{p}]=[-2.0,6.0] to [-0.3,13.2]. Within this region, the integrated rate of brief optical bursts is less than 1.1\times 10^{-8} {\rm s}^{-1} {\rm deg}^{-2}. At \sim22 times the observed GRB rate from BATSE, this suggests a limit on \frac{\theta_{opt}}{\theta_{\gamma}}\lesssim 5 where \theta_{opt} and \theta_{\gamma} are the optical and gamma-ray collimation angles, respectively. Several effects might explain the absence of optical bursts, and a search of the kind described here but more sensitive by about 4 magnitudes should offer a more definitive probe.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, 1 tabl

    Efficacy of Losartan in Hospitalized Patients With COVID-19-Induced Lung Injury: A Randomized Clinical Trial

    Importance: SARS-CoV-2 viral entry may disrupt angiotensin II (AII) homeostasis, contributing to COVID-19 induced lung injury. AII type 1 receptor blockade mitigates lung injury in preclinical models, although data in humans with COVID-19 remain mixed. Objective: To test the efficacy of losartan to reduce lung injury in hospitalized patients with COVID-19. Design, Setting, and Participants: This blinded, placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial was conducted in 13 hospitals in the United States from April 2020 to February 2021. Hospitalized patients with COVID-19 and a respiratory sequential organ failure assessment score of at least 1 and not already using a renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) inhibitor were eligible for participation. Data were analyzed from April 19 to August 24, 2021. Interventions: Losartan 50 mg orally twice daily vs equivalent placebo for 10 days or until hospital discharge. Main Outcomes and Measures: The primary outcome was the imputed arterial partial pressure of oxygen to fraction of inspired oxygen (Pao2:Fio2) ratio at 7 days. Secondary outcomes included ordinal COVID-19 severity; days without supplemental o2, ventilation, or vasopressors; and mortality. Losartan pharmacokinetics and RAAS components (AII, angiotensin-[1-7] and angiotensin-converting enzymes 1 and 2)] were measured in a subgroup of participants. Results: A total of 205 participants (mean [SD] age, 55.2 [15.7] years; 123 [60.0%] men) were randomized, with 101 participants assigned to losartan and 104 participants assigned to placebo. Compared with placebo, losartan did not significantly affect Pao2:Fio2 ratio at 7 days (difference, -24.8 [95%, -55.6 to 6.1]; P = .12). Compared with placebo, losartan did not improve any secondary clinical outcomes and led to fewer vasopressor-free days than placebo (median [IQR], 9.4 [9.1-9.8] vasopressor-free days vs 8.7 [8.2-9.3] vasopressor-free days). Conclusions and Relevance: This randomized clinical trial found that initiation of orally administered losartan to hospitalized patients with COVID-19 and acute lung injury did not improve Pao2:Fio2 ratio at 7 days.     Frightened of giants : fear responses to elephants approach that of predators

    DATA ACCESSIBILITY : Data and code to reproduce the analyses provided in the electronic supplementary material [46].Animals are faced with a variety of dangers or threats, which are increasing in frequency with ongoing environmental change. While our understanding of fearfulness of such dangers is growing in the context of predation and parasitism risk, the extent to which non-trophic, interspecific dangers elicit fear in animals remains less appreciated. We provide an experimental test for fear responses of savannah ungulates to a dominant and aggressive megaherbivore, the African bush elephant (Loxodonta africana), and contrast responses to an apex predator known to elicit fear in this system. Using an automated behavioural response system, we contrast vigilance and run responses of ungulates to elephant, leopard (Panthera pardus), and control (red-chested cuckoo Cuculus solitarius) vocalizations. Overall, we find that ungulates responded to elephant calls, both in terms of an increase in run and vigilance responses relative to controls. The magnitude of most behavioural responses (four of six considered) to elephant vocalizations were not significantly different than responses to leopards. These results suggest that megaherbivores can elicit strong non-trophic fear responses by ungulates and call to broaden frameworks on fear to consider dominant species, such as megaherbivores, as key modifiers of fear-induced interactions.The National Science Foundation.https://royalsocietypublishing.org/journal/rsblam2024Mammal Research InstituteZoology and EntomologySDG-15:Life on lan
