Crystal size and oxygen segregation for polycrystalline GaN
The grain size for polycrystallineGaN,grown in low-temperature gallium-rich conditions, is shown to be correlated to the oxygen content of the films. Films with lower oxygen content were observed to have larger crystals with an increased tendency to a single-preferred crystal orientation.Elastic recoil detection analysis with heavy ions (i.e., 200 MeV ¹⁹⁷Au ions) was used to determine the composition of the GaN films grown for the study, including the hydrogen, carbon, gallium, nitrogen, and oxygen content. Atomic force microscopy and x-ray diffraction were used to study the sample morphology. From these measurements, the available surface area of the films was found to be sufficient for a significant proportion of the oxygen present in the films to segregate at the grain boundaries. This interpretation is consistent with earlier theoretical studies of the formation and segregation of the VGa-(ON)₃defect complex at dislocation sites in gallium-rich GaN. For this work, however, the defect complex is believed to segregate at the grain boundary of the polycrystallineGaN.The authors would like to acknowledge the support of a

Dynamic study on fusion reactions for Ca+Zr around Coulomb barrier
By using the updated improved Quantum Molecular Dynamics model in which a
surface-symmetry potential term has been introduced for the first time, the
excitation functions for fusion reactions of Ca+Zr at
energies around the Coulomb barrier have been studied. The experimental data of
the fusion cross sections for Ca+Zr have been reproduced
remarkably well without introducing any new parameters. The fusion cross
sections for the neutron-rich fusion reactions of Ca+Zr around
the Coulomb barrier are predicted to be enhanced compared with a
non-neutron-rich fusion reaction. In order to clarify the mechanism of the
enhancement of the fusion cross sections for neutron-rich nuclear fusions, we
pay a great attention to study the dynamic lowering of the Coulomb barrier
during a neck formation. The isospin effect on the barrier lowering is
investigated. It is interesting that the effect of the projectile and target
nuclear structure on fusion dynamics can be revealed to a certain extent in our
approach. The time evolution of the N/Z ratio at the neck region has been
firstly illustrated. A large enhancement of the N/Z ratio at neck region for
neutron-rich nuclear fusion reactions is found.Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures,3 table

Balancing of Histone H3K4 Methylation States by the Kdm5c/SMCX Histone Demethylase Modulates Promoter and Enhancer Function
The functional organization of eukaryotic genomes correlates with specific patterns of histone methylations. Regulatory regions in genomes such as enhancers and promoters differ in their extent of methylation of histone H3 at lysine-4 (H3K4), but it is largely unknown how the different methylation states are specified and controlled. Here, we show that the Kdm5c/Jarid1c/SMCX member of the Kdm5 family of H3K4 demethylases can be recruited to both enhancer and promoter elements in mouse embryonic stem cells and in neuronal progenitor cells. Knockdown of Kdm5c deregulates transcription via local increases in H3K4me3. Our data indicate that by restricting H3K4me3 modification at core promoters, Kdm5c dampens transcription, but at enhancers Kdm5c stimulates their activity. Remarkably, an impaired enhancer function activates the intrinsic promoter activity of Kdm5c-bound distal elements. Our results demonstrate that the Kdm5c demethylase plays a crucial and dynamic role in the functional discrimination between enhancers and core promoters
Coupled-channels analysis of the O+Pb fusion barrier distribution
Analyses using simplified coupled-channels models have been unable to
describe the shape of the previously measured fusion barrier distribution for
the doubly magic O+Pb system. This problem was investigated by
re-measuring the fission excitation function for O+Pb with
improved accuracy and performing more exact coupled-channels calculations,
avoiding the constant-coupling and first-order coupling approximations often
used in simplified analyses. Couplings to the single- and 2-phonon states of
Pb, correctly taking into account the excitation energy and the phonon
character of these states, particle transfers, and the effects of varying the
diffuseness of the nuclear potential, were all explored. However, in contrast
to other recent analyses of precise fusion data, no satisfactory simultaneous
description of the shape of the experimental barrier distribution and the
fusion cross-sections for O+Pb was obtained.Comment: RevTex, 29 pages, 7 postscript figures, to appear in PR
Clinicoradiological manifestations of paraganglioma syndromes associated with succinyl dehydrogenase enzyme mutation
BACKGROUND: Paragangliomas are rare tumours derived from the autonomic nervous system that have increasingly been recognised to have a genetic predisposition. Mutations of the enzyme succinyl dehydrogenase (SDH) have proven to result in paraganglioma formation. There are four subunits (A through D) that form the enzyme complex and are associated with different genophenotypic expressions of disease. SDHB and SDHD mutations are more common, whereas SDHA and SDHC mutations are rare. Patients with SDHB mutations are prone to extra-adrenal pheochromocytomas, malignant disease and extra-paraganglial neoplasia, whereas SDHD mutations have a greater propensity for multiple, benign head and neck paragangliomas. METHODS: Diagnosis of a sporadic paraganglioma or pheochromocytoma should lead to a full genetic workup of the patient and family if SDH mutations are found. RESULTS: Further annual screening will be required depending on the mutation, which can have a significant impact on radiologists and the resources of the radiology department. CONCLUSION: We present our imaging experience with a series of patients with proven SDH mutations resulting in paragangliomas with a review of the literature
Generic Business Model Types for Enterprise Mashup Intermediaries
The huge demand for situational and ad-hoc applications desired by the mass of business end users led to a new kind of Web applications, well-known as Enterprise Mashups. Users with no or limited programming skills are empowered to leverage in a collaborative manner existing Mashup components by combining and reusing company internal and external resources within minutes to new value added applications. Thereby, Enterprise Mashup environments interact as intermediaries to match the supply of providers and demand of consumers. By following the design science approach, we propose an interaction phase model artefact based on market transaction phases to structure required intermediary features. By means of five case studies, we demonstrate the application of the designed model and identify three generic business model types for Enterprise Mashups intermediaries (directory, broker, and marketplace). So far, intermediaries following a real marketplace business model don’t exist in context of Enterprise Mashups and require further research for this emerging paradigm
