    The construction of ethnic minority identity: A discursive psychological approach to ethnic self-definition in action

    The present article intends to examine how ethnic minority group members account for their ethnic identity as part of a series of interviews with young Mapuches on what it means to be Mapuche in contemporary Chilean society. The focus is on the actual accomplishment and display of ethnic self-definition and group identification. We draw on insights from discursive psychology to explore some features of common-sense practical reasoning that ethnic minority group members use to negotiate, self-ascribe or resist a particular sense of identity, and to produce observable and reportable identities. We have a particular interest in illustrating how ethnic self-definition can be seen as the contingent outcome of a practical and interpretive issue for members of society, with a special focus on how ethnic minority identity is constructed through the flexible use of group-defining attributes and characteristics, categories and common-sense categorial knowledge. We suggest that understanding the complex significance and meaning of ethnic self-definition for minority group members is dependent on engaging closely with its occasioned context of production and treating social identities as a feature of how people describe themselves. It is argued that this view of ethnic minority self-definition as a practical and interpretive issue and as a discursive product in action can provide a further contribution to literature of both discursive and intercultural studies of ethnic identification of minority groups, intercultural and interethnic relations. © The Author(s) 2011

    Everyday cosmopolitanism in representations of Europe among young Romanians in Britain

    The paper presents an analysis of everyday cosmopolitanism in constructions of Europe among young Romanian nationals living in Britain. Adopting a social representations approach, cosmopolitanism is understood as a cultural symbolic resource that is part of everyday knowledge. Through a discursively-oriented analysis of focus group data, we explore the ways in which notions of cosmopolitanism intersect with images of Europeanness in the accounts of participants. We show that, for our participants, representations of Europe are anchored in an Orientalist schema of West-vs.-East, whereby the West is seen as epitomising European values of modernity and progress, while the East is seen as backward and traditional. Our findings further show that representations of cosmopolitanism reinforce this East/West dichotomy, within a discourse of ‘Occidental cosmopolitanism’. The paper concludes with a critical discussion of the diverse and complex ideological foundations of these constructions of European cosmopolitanism and their implications

    What a discursive understanding of interprofessional team meetings might reveal: an exploration of intellectual (learning) disability managers' performances.

    Clinical and academic understandings of interprofessional working are focused mainly on individual factors such as knowledge about different professional roles, and organisational opportunities for interprofessional working (IPW). Less research has examined what happens between people at an interactional level, that is, how interprofessional working is conducted in everyday face-to-face interactions in clinical practice. The current paper proposes a discursive framework for understanding what constitutes IPW in interprofessional meetings at this interactional level. Clinical effectiveness meetings held in intellectual (learning) disability services were used as an example site for IPW. The analysis explored how agenda change points were negotiated, appropriate as agenda change points require collaboration (or agreement) between practitioners to progress to the next point The study found changes in agenda points were accomplished by practitioners conjointly through using discursive strategies including closing questions, and resources such as professional identity and laughter. The agenda provided a frame for the institutional order of the meetings, invoking a trajectory towards timely completion. However, this institutional order was at times subordinated to an 'order of concern', which seemed to enable challenges by managers to the meeting Chair and the agenda that demonstrated adherence not only to the procedural nature of the meetings, but also to the needs of service users and the services discussed. We suggest discursive strategies, resources, and both institutional orders, and order of concerns might provide a framework for developing future training and research, that is able to illuminate how IPW might be enacted in face-to-face team meetings

    The emergence and prevalence of systemic extortion depends on particular institutional arrangements, produced as adaptive responses of the interaction between different social actors. The following typology characterises these arrangements in six categories, involving three main social actors: criminal organisations, state and civil society. While the six categories focus on institutional arrangements that foster systemic extortion, the typology could be loosely described as presenting two categories focusing on each of the three main social actors. The predominant social actor in each category derives from the relative importance of that actor for the specific aspect of the institutional arrangements addressed by each category. The major contribution of this typology is the acknowledgement that extortion rackets cannot be understood without looking at the dimensions of the political environment they exist in (i.e. state) and the social environment (i.e. civil society, which comprises potential and actual victims). Following the six categories, the main factors allowing for the emergence and persistence of systemic extortion are grouped into socio-spatial, socio-normative and socio-cognitive factors
