    Self-assembly of hydrofluorinated Janus graphene monolayer:a versatile route for designing novel Janus nanoscrolls

    With remarkably interesting surface activities, two-dimensional Janus materials arouse intensive interests recently in many fields. We demonstrate by molecular dynamic simulations that hydrofluorinated Janus graphene (J-GN) can self-assemble into Janus nanoscroll (J-NS) at room temperature. The van der Waals (vdW) interaction and the coupling of C-H/π/C-F interaction and π/π interaction are proven to offer the continuous driving force of self-assembly of J-GN. The results show that J-GN can self-assemble into various J-NSs structures, including arcs, multi-wall J-NS and arm-chair-like J-NS by manipulating its original geometry (size and aspect ratio). Moreover, we also investigated self-assembly of hydrofluorinated J-GN and Fe nanowires (NWs), suggesting that Fe NW is a good alternative to activate J-GN to form J-NS. Differently, the strong vdW interaction between J-GN and Fe NW provides the main driving force of the self-assembly. Finally, we studied the hydrogen sorption over the formed J-NS with a considerable interlayer spacing, which reaches the US DOE target, indicating that J-NS is a promising candidate for hydrogen storage by controlling the temperature of system. Our theoretical results firstly provide a versatile route for designing novel J-NS from 2D Janus nanomaterials, which has a great potential application in the realm of hydrogen storage/separation

    Eriodictyol protects skin cells from UVA irradiation-induced photodamage by inhibition of the MAPK signaling pathway

    Solar UVA irradiation-generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) induces the expression of matrix metalloproteinase 1 (MMP-1), leading to photoaging, however the molecular mechanism remains unclear. In the present study, we found that eriodictyol remarkably reduces UVA-mediated ROS generation and protects the skin cells from oxidative damage and the ensuing cell death. Moreover eriodictyol pretreatment significantly down-regulates the UVA-induced MMP-1 expression, and lowers the inflammatory responses within the skin cells. Pretreatment with eriodictyol upregulates the expression of tissue inhibitory metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP-1) and collagen-I (COL-1) at the transcriptional level in a dose-dependent manner. UVA-induced phosphorylation levels of c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and p38 leading to increased MMP-1 expression are significantly reduced in eriodictyol-treated skin cells. In addition, eriodictyol pretreatment significantly suppresses inflammatory cytokines and inhibits the activation of MAPK signaling cascades in skin cells. Taken together, our results demonstrate that eriodictyol has both potent anti-inflammatory and anti-photoaging effects.</p

    Cardioprotective Effect of Betulinic Acid on Myocardial Ischemia Reperfusion Injury in Rats

    Objectives. This study aims to investigate the effect of betulinic acid (BA) on myocardial ischemia reperfusion/injury in an open-chest anesthetized rat model. Methods. The model was induced by 30 minutes left anterior descending occlusion followed by 2 hours reperfusion. There are six groups in our present study: sham operation group, ischemia/reperfusion group, low-dosage BA group, medium-dosage BA group, high-dosage BA group, and fosinopril sodium group. Rats in the latter four groups were administrated with BA (50, 100, and 200 mg/kg, i.g.) or fosinopril sodium (10 mg/kg, i.g.) once a day for 7 days before operation, respectively. Rats in the former two groups were given the same volume of vehicle (0.5% CMC-Na, i.g.). During the operation, cardiac function was continuously monitored. Serum LDH and CK were measured with colorimetric assays. The expression of Bcl-2 and Bax and the apoptosis of cardiomyocytes were investigated with western blot and TUNEL assay, respectively. Results. Pretreatment with BA improved cardiac function and attenuated LDH and CK activities compared with IR group. Further investigation demonstrated that the expression of Bcl-2 and Bax and TUNEL assay was in line with the above results. Conclusion. BA may reduce the release of LDH and CK, prevent cardiomyocytes apoptosis, and eventually alleviate the extent of the myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury

    Quantitative characterization of the disturbance of groundwater system in typical coal seam mining in contiguous area of Inner Mongolia and Shaanxi

    High-intensity mining of coal mines in ecologically fragile areas disturbs the groundwater system and causes water resources loss. The typical shallow and deep mining mines in the middle section of the Yellow River basin are selected as the research objects, and the development height of the water-conducting fracture zone in the shallow composite coal seam mining and the deep single coal seam mining is comprehensively determined by using the theoretical analysis, numerical simulation of overburden damage and the underground measurement, and the comparison with surrounding mines with similar conditions. According to the spatial location relationship between the water-conducting fracture zone and the main roof aquifer/aquiclude, the water filling model of Zhiluo Formation - Zhidan Group aquifer in shallow coal seam mining and that of Zhiluo Formation aquifer in deep coal seam mining are divided; By generalizing the groundwater flow system of different aquifer water filling modes, the three-dimensional unsteady flow mathematical model of groundwater in typical coal seam mining is constructed, and the numerical model of groundwater flow in two working conditions is established by using Visual Modflow software. The quantitative prediction of groundwater flow field and water resource loss in the mining of the continuous working face is carried out, and the results show that the groundwater from Zhidan Group and Zhiluo Formation aquifers in the disturbed aquifer is converging towards the goaf at the same time, the flow field also gradually recovers with the formation of the secondary stable structure of the roof after mining. Around the goaf, the groundwater flow field shows a local high hydraulic gradient phenomenon; In addition, the average annual water loss of the two coal mining conditions in the continuous period is more than 2 million m3 and 7.3 million m3 respectively. The research results provide a reference for the advanced fine control of regional water resources loss and the utilization of mine water resources

    BNT162b2 or CoronaVac Vaccinations Are Associated With a Lower Risk of Myocardial Infarction and Stroke After SARS‐CoV‐2 Infection Among Patients With Cardiovascular Disease

    Background: COVID‐19 vaccines have demonstrated effectiveness against SARS‐CoV‐2 infection, hospitalization, and mortality. The association between vaccination and risk of cardiovascular complications shortly after SARS‐CoV‐2 infection among patients with cardiovascular disease remains unknown. Methods and Results: A case–control study was conducted with cases defined as patients who had myocardial infarction or stroke within 28 days after SARS‐CoV‐2 infection between January 1, 2022 and August 15, 2022. Controls were defined as all other patients who attended any health services and were not cases. Individuals without history of cardiovascular disease were excluded. Each case was randomly matched with 10 controls according to sex, age, Charlson comorbidity index, and date of hospital admission. Adjusted odds ratio with 95% CI was estimated using conditional logistic regression. We identified 808 cases matched with 7771 controls among all patients with cardiovascular disease. Results showed that vaccination with BNT162b2 or CoronaVac was associated with a lower risk of myocardial infarction or stroke after SARS‐CoV‐2 infection with a dose–response relationship. For BNT162b2, risk decreased from 0.49 (95% CI, 0.29–0.84) to 0.30 (95% CI, 0.20–0.44) and 0.17 (95% CI, 0.08–0.34) from 1 to 3 doses, respectively. Similar trends were observed for CoronaVac, with risk decreased from 0.69 (95% CI, 0.57–0.85) to 0.42 (95% CI, 0.34–0.52) and 0.32 (95% CI, 0.21–0.49) from 1 to 3 doses, respectively. Conclusions: Vaccination with BNT162b2 or CoronaVac is associated with a lower risk of myocardial infarction or stroke after SARS‐CoV‐2 infection among patients with cardiovascular disease

    Safety of BNT162b2 or CoronaVac COVID-19 vaccines in patients with heart failure: A self-controlled case series study

    BACKGROUND: COVID-19 vaccines are important for patients with heart failure (HF) to prevent severe outcomes but the safety concerns could lead to vaccine hesitancy. This study aimed to investigate the safety of two COVID-19 vaccines, BNT162b2 and CoronaVac, in patients with HF. METHODS: We conducted a self-controlled case series analysis using the data from the Hong Kong Hospital Authority and the Department of Health. The primary outcome was hospitalization for HF and the secondary outcomes were major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and all hospitalization. We identified patients with a history of HF before February 23, 2021 and developed the outcome event between February 23, 2021 and March 31, 2022 in Hong Kong. Incidence rate ratios (IRR) were estimated using conditional Poisson regression to evaluate the risks following the first three doses of BNT162b2 or CoronaVac. FINDINGS: We identified 32,490 patients with HF, of which 3035 were vaccinated and had a hospitalization for HF during the observation period (BNT162b2 = 755; CoronaVac = 2280). There were no increased risks during the 0–13 days (IRR 0.64 [95% confidence interval 0.33–1.26]; 0.94 [0.50–1.78]; 0.82 [0.17–3.98]) and 14–27 days (0.73 [0.35–1.52]; 0.95 [0.49–1.84]; 0.60 [0.06–5.76]) after the first, second and third doses of BNT162b2. No increased risks were observed for CoronaVac during the 0–13 days (IRR 0.60 [0.41–0.88]; 0.71 [0.45–1.12]; 1.64 [0.40–6.77]) and 14–27 days (0.91 [0.63–1.32]; 0.79 [0.46–1.35]; 1.71 [0.44–6.62]) after the first, second and third doses. We also found no increased risk of MACE or all hospitalization after vaccination. INTERPRETATION: Our results showed no increased risk of hospitalization for HF, MACE or all hospitalization after receiving BNT162b2 or CoronaVac vaccines in patients with HF.
