Bactericidal Property of Oregano Oil Against Multidrug-Resistant Clinical Isolates
Development of non-antibiotic alternatives to treat infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) microbes represents one of the top priorities in healthcare and community settings, especially in the care of combat trauma-associated wound infections. Here, we investigate efficacy of oregano oil against pathogenic bacteria including MDR isolates from the combat casualties in vitro and in a mouse burn model. Oregano oil showed a significant anti-bacterial activity against 11 MDR clinical isolates including four Acinetobacter baumannii, three Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and four methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) obtained from combat casualties and two luminescent strains of PA01 and MRSA USA300, with a MIC ranging from 0.08 mg/ml to 0.64 mg/ml. Oregano oil also effectively eradicated biofilms formed by each of the 13 pathogens above at similar MICs. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that oregano oil damaged bacterial cells and altered the morphology of their biofilms. While efficiently inactivating bacteria, there was no evidence of resistance development after up to 20 consecutive passages of representative bacterial strains in the presence of sublethal doses of oregano oil. In vivo study using the third-degree burn wounds infected with PA01 or USA300 demonstrated that oregano oil, topically applied 24 h after bacterial inoculation, sufficiently reduced the bacterial load in the wounds by 3 log10 in 1 h, as measured by drastic reduction of bacterial bioluminescence. This bactericidal activity of oregano oil concurred with no significant side effect on the skin histologically or genotoxicity after three topical applications of oregano oil at 10 mg/ml for three consecutive days. The investigation suggests potentials of oregano oil as an alternative to antibiotics for the treatment of wound-associated infections regardless of antibiotic susceptibility
Toward the development of smart capabilities for understanding seafloor stretching morphology and biogeographic patterns via DenseNet from high-resolution multibeam bathymetric surveys for underwater vehicles
The increasing use of underwater vehicles facilitates deep-sea exploration at a wide range of depths and spatial scales. In this paper, we make an initial attempt to develop online computing strategies to identify seafloor categories and predict biogeographic patterns with a deep learning-based architecture, DenseNet, integrated with joint morphological cues, with the expectation of potentially developing its embedded smart capacities. We utilized high-resolution multibeam bathymetric measurements derived from MBES and denoted a collection of joint morphological cues to help with semantic mapping and localization. We systematically strengthened dominant feature propagation and promoted feature reuse via DenseNet by applying the channel attention module and spatial pyramid pooling. From our experiment results, the seafloor classification accuracy reached up to 89.87%, 82.01%, and 73.52% on average in terms of PA, MPA, and MIoU metrics, achieving comparable performances with the state-of-the-art deep learning frameworks. We made a preliminary study on potential biogeographic distribution statistics, which allowed us to delicately distinguish the functionality of probable submarine benthic habitats. This study demonstrates the premise of using underwater vehicles through unbiased means or pre-programmed path planning to quantify and estimate seafloor categories and the exhibited fine-scale biogeographic patterns
Psychiatric emergency department visits during the coronavirus disease-2019 pandemic
BackgroundPrevious research has demonstrated the negative impact of the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on mental health.AimsTo examine changes in the Chinese psychiatric emergency department (PED) visits for mental health crises that occurred during the pandemic.MethodsBefore and during the COVID-19 pandemic, PED visit counts from the largest psychiatric hospital in China between 2018 and 2020 were investigated. Electronic medical records of 2020 PED visits were extracted during the COVID-19 pandemic period and compared for the same period of 2018 and 2019.ResultsOverall, PED visits per year increased from 1,767 in 2018 to 2210 (an increase of 25.1%) in 2019 and 2,648 (an increase of 49.9%) in 2020. Compared with 2 years before the epidemic, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the proportion of PED visits among patients with stress disorders, sleep disorders, and anxiety disorders increased significantly. In terms of the distribution of demographic characteristics, age shows a younger trend, while the gender difference is not significant.ConclusionThese findings suggest that PED care-seeking increases during the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the need to integrate mental health services for patients with stress, sleep, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorders during public health crises
Broadband plasmonic-enhanced forward and backward multiplex coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering microscopy
Coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) microscopy is an attractive technique for label-free biochemical-specific characterization of biological specimens. However, it has very low sensitivity in monitoring and imaging molecules present in extremely low concentrations or at fast speeds. To improve this sensitivity, especially for multiplex CARS, the intensity of the pump beam and broadband Stokes beam should be enhanced simultaneously. Therefore, the gold shell particle and gold surface are demonstrated to enhance the forward and backward CARS, respectively. Results show that a signal enhancement factor of ∼25;000 can be achieved for the gold surface and an even higher enhancement factor can be achieved for the gold shell particles. Thus, we can obtain an enhanced CARS signal in a broad spectral range, which will substantially improve the detection sensitivity of hyperspectral CARS spectroscopy and imaging
Platinum-macrocycle co-catalyst for electro-oxidation of formic acid
In this work, a new promoter, tetrasulfophthalocyanine (FeTSPc), one kind of environmental friendly material, was found to be very effective in both inhibiting self-poisoning and improving the intrinsic catalysis activity, consequently enhancing the electro-oxidation current during the electro-oxidation of formic acid. The cyclic voltammograms test showed that the formic acid oxidation peak current density has been increased about 10 times compared with that of the Pt electrode without FeTSPc. The electrochemical double potential step chronoamperometry measurements revealed that the apparent activity energy decreases from 20.64 kJ mol−1 to 17.38 kJ mol−1 after Pt electrode promoted by FeTSPc. The promoting effect of FeTSPc may be owed to the specific structure and abundant electrons of FeTSPc resulting in both the steric hindrance of the formation of poisoning species (CO) and intrinsic kinetic enhancement. In the single cell test, the performance of DFAFC increased from 80 mW cm−2 mg−1 (Pt) to 130 mW cm−2 mg−1 after the anode electrode adsorbed FeTSPc. A novel hybrid based on carbon nanotubes and heteropolyanions as effective catalyst for hydrogen evolution
Heteropolyanions of tungstophosphoric acid (PWA) have been successfully hybridized with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by a severe mechanical milling. The obtained hybrid is electroactive for hydrogen evolution (HE) at potentials as positive as −0.16 V vs. Ag/AgCl in 0.2 M HClO4 aqueous solution and its electrocatalysis is up to the level of Pt/CNTs (20 wt% Pt) for HE, indicating a vigorous alternative to Pt group metals. The HE mechanism of the hybrid was also studied and it was found that the tungsten oxycarbides are the electroactive components for HE. The real role of carbon in Pt/C catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction
A new electrocatalysis of carbon materials for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on Pt/C catalysts was discovered. It was found that there exist two kinds of electroactive sites on these supports of carbon materials, which can effectively electrocatalyze the reduction of peroxide intermediated from oxygen reduction on Pt, as this provides continuous driving force to move the equilibrium toward the production of peroxide from ORR.
