Paper Session I-B - Laser Communications Utilizing Molniya Satellite

    Get PDF
The telecommunications evolution has advanced to level where bandwidth is now a limiting factor for data transmission. The use of laser communications with satellites is not a new idea and has been proven ,Ref [3], in certain configurations using geostationary orbits. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the use of laser technology for land based terminals above the 80-degree latitude. After establishing an understanding of the nature of the mathematical model for the turbulent effects on laser beams, the investigation will utilize the Molniya satellite orbit characteristics with the goal of eliminating or reducing the tracking complexity

Using A Two Treatment Factorial Design To Analyze The First Day Percent Change In Price For Initial Public Offerings

    Get PDF
An area of considerable interest in finance is the behavior of IPO stock prices on the first day of issue.  This paper uses a sample of 282 IPOs from 2002 through 2007 to investigate the performance of the first day percent change in price (FDPCP) of these stocks.  A two treatment factorial design is utilized to determine if two factors impact the mean value of this variable.  The first factor, or treatment, is the relationship between the final offer price and the price range found in the prospectus associated with SEC Form S-1, also known as the "red herring."  The second treatment is the state of the market at the time of issue, bull or bear.  This experimental design allows for the testing of three hypotheses.  The first hypothesis looks at the relationship between the mean value of the FDPCP and the value of the final offer price relative to the filing range found in the initial prospectus.  The second hypothesis looks at the relationship between the mean value of the FDPCP and the state of the market at the time of issue, while the third hypothesis seeks to determine if there is an interaction between the two treatments

An Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of Turnitin.Com As A Tool For Reducing Plagiarism In Graduate Student Term Papers

    Get PDF
Plagiarism is a continual problem in academia. Plagiarism-detection tools like Turnitin have been used for nearly ten years to help university faculty and administration combat this form of cheating (turnitin.com). This paper evaluates the difference in plagiarism levels in graduate-student term papers when students are not provided access to Turnitin to evaluate their own work versus the level of plagiarism in student term papers when students have access to Turnitin to check their work as they are generating their papers. Descriptive statistics and a T-test comparison of the two groups are provided along with a brief literature review of plagiarism and academic integrity violations

One of the challenges for educators is composing well-written, specifically stated outcomes of student learning. Developmental teacher training is a program designed to improve the effectiveness of university instructors. The program focuses on improving course methodology by guiding instructors through the development of correctly written and structured course objectives, effective and efficient delivery methodology including implementation of technology as a delivery medium, and proper outcomes evaluation of course effectiveness measured against the course objectives. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of the training. The outline used in the training is included in the appendix

    Get PDF
This study is a comparative analysis of the objective writing skills of pre-service teachers to determine the efficacy of utilizing a master verb list based on Bloom’s Taxonomy. Students enrolled in a mid-size university were asked to create a set of objectives to measure Bloom’s Taxonomy learning outcomes. One group received a master list of verbs categorized through research appropriately into learning levels. The other group received a variety of lists with conflicting verbs in categories. Students who received the master list were better able than their counterparts to write precise, clear and accurate objectives
