Géorgie-Ossétie-Russie.
This war, unleashed by the action of he Georgian president M. Saakashvili, was a consequence of a clash between contrasting geopolitical goals in Caucasus. This article adopts a multi-scale approach to explain the war, analyzing its various dimensions, starting with the Abkhazian and Ossetian separatisms and the Georgian policy, aimed at âunifyingâ and modernizing the country, but dealing as well with the complex relationship between Russia and Georgia and finally with the wider international geopolitical rivalries playing out in the Caucasus

The present article deals with the emigration of Russian speaking population from Central Asia after the collapse of the Soviet Union. It aims to analyze the determining factors of the post-soviet mobility (economic crisis, civil war, interethnic relations) and to put this process into the recent history of migrations. In so doing, this paper explores the repercussions of this massive flow on Central Asia, which represents a fundamental aspect of the post-soviet transformation
RĂ©activant notamment certaines pratiques soviĂ©tiques, ces marchands façonnent des routes commerciales qui, face au cloisonnement et Ă lâenclavement post-soviĂ©tiques, assurent des formes dâintĂ©gration rĂ©gionale et participent Ă la « mondialisation par le bas ».Independence of the Republics of Central Asia was characterized by the crisis of Soviet economic system and by the moving, in different ways, to the market economy. In this context, a new geography of trade, based on new emerging actors and on implementation of capitalistic strategies, appeared. Next to the official trade, merchant networks are organized from the international scale to the local one by numerous shuttle traders who supply the Central Asian bazaars. They revive some of the practices inherited from the Soviet time. In this way, these merchants shape trade roads that facilitate the regional integration and participate to âthe globalization from belowâ while the new countries are fragmented and land-locked.
Since the late 1990s, the territoriality of Central Asian populations of Uzbekistan is changing, due to the emergence of labour migrations. Facing this seasonal and temporary mobility, Uzbekistanis authorities adopted an ambiguous attitude, since the new territorial and social practices raise questions about the development model followed after independence. This unprecedented mobility is a part of global and post-colonial dynamics: the migratory space, which is structured by airline, train and bus networks, is stretching from East Asia to North America. Nevertheless, the main destinations of Uzbekistanis workers, who are mostly men, are Russia and, secondarily, Kazakhstan. Introducing new forms of dependency, these massive flows refer to the original trajectory pursued by Uzbekistan, from the âNorthâ to the âSouthâ.

International audienceSince the collapse of the Soviet Union, Central Asian oases are involved in a process of integration into the globalization, which varies from one country to another. In a context of strong demographic growth, the agricultural sector is transformed by the de-collectivization of former soviet farms, and by the reorientation of the production decided by authorities in order to satisfy internal demand. The emergence and increase of labor migration from Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan was also one of the most significant changes of Central Asian oases, during the post-soviet transition. In contrast with their soviet low mobility, oasis populations have adopted a new territoriality since the mid-1990s: nowadays, several millions migrants from Central Asia work abroad, particularly in Russia, the former metropolis, and in Kazakhstan. Based on field studies, this article analyzes this post-colonial mobility which contributes to the "thirdworldization" and to the "southernization" of Central Asia. It wants also to discuss the idea that the central Asian populations are less and less linked to the irrigated areas, from an economic and social point of view, because of the number of migrants and of the importance of their remittances
