    Dethinning Extensive Air Shower Simulations

    We describe a method for restoring information lost during statistical thinning in extensive air shower simulations. By converting weighted particles from thinned simulations to swarms of particles with similar characteristics, we obtain a result that is essentially identical to the thinned shower, and which is very similar to non-thinned simulations of showers. We call this method dethinning. Using non-thinned showers on a large scale is impossible because of unrealistic CPU time requirements, but with thinned showers that have been dethinned, it is possible to carry out large-scale simulation studies of the detector response for ultra-high energy cosmic ray surface arrays. The dethinning method is described in detail and comparisons are presented with parent thinned showers and with non-thinned showers

    Antibiotic susceptibilities of Haemophilus influenzae in central Scotland

    ObjectiveTo ascertain the incidence of antibiotic resistance in Haemophilus influenzae in central Scotland and the β-lactamases produced by these isolates.MethodsA total of 213 H. influenzae isolates from four medical lefts in Scotland [Aberdeen (n = 58), Edinburgh (n = 55), Glasgow (n = 64) and Dundee (n = 36)] were tested for susceptibility to a range of antimicrobials including β-lactams, β-lactam/β-lactamase-inhibitor combinations, and a representative 4-quinolone, antifolate and macrolide. Susceptibility testing of the β-lactam/β-lactamase-inhibitor combination amoxicillin plus clavulanic acid was conducted at both 2:1 and 4:1 ratios and with clavulanic acid fixed at a concentration of 2 mg/L. Each strain was further investigated for the presence of β-lactamase activity.ResultsAlthough the incidence of resistance to amoxicillin was 15%, in the presence of clavulanic acid, this resistance was reduced to 4.2%, 5.6% and 4.2% with the 2:1 ratio, 4:1 ratio and 2 mg/L fixed concentration, respectively. Sixteen percent of the isolates demonstrated immediate β-lactamase production. Isoelectric focusing showed that 77.4%, 16.1% and 6.5% of the β-lactamase-positive strains were found to contain TEM-1, VAT-1 and both TEM-1 and VAT-1 β-lactamases, respectively. A further 29% of the strains were recognized as being β-lactamase-positive after prolonged incubation with nitrocephin.ConclusionsThis study suggests that current testing for β-lactamases may underestimate the prevalence of β-lactamase production in H. influenzae

    Influence of intensive melt shearing on the microstructure and mechanical properties of an Al-Mg alloy with high added impurity content

    The official published version can be accessed from the link below - Copyright @ The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society and ASM International 2011We have investigated the influence of melt conditioning by intensive shearing on the mechanical behavior and microstructure of Al-Mg-Mn-Fe-Cu-Si alloy sheet produced from a small book mold ingot with high added impurity content. The melt conditioned ingot has fine grains throughout its cross section, whereas a conventionally cast ingot, without melt shearing, has coarser grains and shows a wider variation of grain size. Both needle-shaped and coarse Chinese script iron bearing intermetallic particles are found in the microstructure at the center of the conventionally processed ingot, but for the melt conditioned ingot, only fine Chinese script intermetallic particles are observed. In addition to the iron bearing intermetallics, Mg2Si particles are also observed. The ingots were rolled to thin sheet and solution heat treated (SHT). During rolling, the iron-based intermetallics and Mg2Si particles are broken and aligned along the rolling direction. Yield strength (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS), and elongation of the intensively melt sheared and processed sheet are all improved compared to the conventionally cast and processed sheet. Fractographic analysis of the tensile fracture surfaces shows that the clustered and coarse iron bearing intermetallic particles are responsible for the observed reduction in mechanical properties of the conventionally cast sheet. We have shown that by refining the initial microstructure of the ingot by intensive shear melt conditioning, it is possible to achieve improved mechanical properties at the final sheet gage of an AlMgMn alloy with a high content of impurities.This study is under the Technology Strategy Board funded REALCAR projec

    Diffusive propagation of cosmic rays from supernova remnants in the Galaxy. I: spectrum and chemical composition

    In this paper we investigate the effect of stochasticity in the spatial and temporal distribution of supernova remnants on the spectrum and chemical composition of cosmic rays observed at Earth. The calculations are carried out for different choices of the diffusion coefficient D(E) experienced by cosmic rays during propagation in the Galaxy. In particular, at high energies we assume that D(E)\sim E^{\delta}, with δ=1/3\delta=1/3 and δ=0.6\delta=0.6 being the reference scenarios. The large scale distribution of supernova remnants in the Galaxy is modeled following the distribution of pulsars, with and without accounting for the spiral structure of the Galaxy. We find that the stochastic fluctuations induced by the spatial and temporal distribution of supernovae, together with the effect of spallation of nuclei, lead to mild but sensible violations of the simple, leaky-box-inspired rule that the spectrum observed at Earth is N(E)EαN(E)\propto E^{-\alpha} with α=γ+δ\alpha=\gamma+\delta, where γ\gamma is the slope of the cosmic ray injection spectrum at the sources. Spallation of nuclei, even with the small rates appropriate for He, may account for slight differences in spectral slopes between different nuclei, providing a possible explanation for the recent CREAM observations. For δ=1/3\delta=1/3 we find that the slope of the proton and helium spectra are 2.67\sim 2.67 and 2.6\sim 2.6 respectively at energies above 1 TeV (to be compared with the measured values of 2.66±0.022.66\pm 0.02 and 2.58±0.022.58\pm 0.02). For δ=0.6\delta=0.6 the hardening of the He spectra is not observed. We also comment on the effect of time dependence of the escape of cosmic rays from supernova remnants, and of a possible clustering of the sources in superbubbles.     A Measurement of Time-Averaged Aerosol Optical Depth using Air-Showers Observed in Stereo by HiRes

    Air fluorescence measurements of cosmic ray energy must be corrected for attenuation of the atmosphere. In this paper we show that the air-showers themselves can yield a measurement of the aerosol attenuation in terms of optical depth, time-averaged over extended periods. Although the technique lacks statistical power to make the critical hourly measurements that only specialized active instruments can achieve, we note the technique does not depend on absolute calibration of the detector hardware, and requires no additional equipment beyond the fluorescence detectors that observe the air showers. This paper describes the technique, and presents results based on analysis of 1258 air-showers observed in stereo by the High Resolution Fly's Eye over a four year span.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication by Astroparticle Physics Journa

    Several proposed source models for Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs) consist of dipole distributions oriented towards major astrophysical landmarks such as the galactic center, M87, or Centaurus A. We use a comparison between real data and simulated data to show that the HiRes-I monocular data for energies above 10^{18.5} eV is, in fact, consistent with an isotropic source model. We then explore methods to quantify our sensitivity to dipole source models oriented towards the Galactic Center, M87, and Centaurus A.Comment: 17 pages, 31 figure

    Impact of long-term erythromycin therapy on the oropharyngeal microbiome and resistance gene reservoir in non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis

    Published 18 April 2018Long-term macrolide therapy reduces rates of pulmonary exacerbation in bronchiectasis. However, little is known about the potential for macrolide therapy to alter the composition and function of the oropharyngeal commensal microbiota or to increase the carriage of transmissible antimicrobial resistance. We assessed the effect of long-term erythromycin on oropharyngeal microbiota composition and the carriage of transmissible macrolide resistance genes in 84 adults with bronchiectasis, enrolled in the Bronchiectasis and Low-dose Erythromycin Study (BLESS) 48-week placebo-controlled trial of twice-daily erythromycin ethylsuccinate (400 mg). Oropharyngeal microbiota composition and macrolide resistance gene carriage were determined by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and quantitative PCR, respectively. Long-term erythromycin treatment was associated with a significant increase in the relative abundance of oropharyngeal Haemophilus parainfluenzae (P = 0.041) and with significant decreases in the relative abundances of Streptococcus pseudopneumoniae (P = 0.024) and Actinomyces odontolyticus (P = 0.027). Validation of the sequencing results by quantitative PCR confirmed a significant decrease in the abundance of Actinomyces spp. (P = 0.046). Erythromycin treatment did not result in a significant increase in the number of subjects who carried erm(A), erm(B), erm(C), erm(F), mef(A/E), and msrA macrolide resistance genes. However, the abundance of erm(B) and mef(A/E) gene copies within carriers who had received erythromycin increased significantly (P < 0.05). Our findings indicate that changes in oropharyngeal microbiota composition resulting from long-term erythromycin treatment are modest and are limited to a discrete group of taxa. Associated increases in levels of transmissible antibiotic resistance genes within the oropharyngeal microbiota highlight the potential for this microbial system to act as a reservoir for resistance.IMPORTANCE Recent demonstrations that long-term macrolide therapy can prevent exacerbations in chronic airways diseases have led to a dramatic increase in their use. However, little is known about the wider, potentially adverse impacts of these treatments. Substantial disruption of the upper airway commensal microbiota might reduce its contribution to host defense and local immune regulation, while increases in macrolide resistance carriage would represent a serious public health concern. Using samples from a randomized controlled trial, we show that low-dose erythromycin given over 48 weeks influences the composition of the oropharyngeal commensal microbiota. We report that macrolide therapy is associated with significant changes in the relative abundances of members of the Actinomyces genus and with significant increases in the carriage of transmissible macrolide resistance. Determining the clinical significance of these changes, relative to treatment benefit, now represents a research priority.Jocelyn M. Choo, Guy C. J.     Observation of the Ankle and Evidence for a High-Energy Break in the Cosmic Ray Spectrum

    We have measured the cosmic ray spectrum at energies above 101710^{17} eV using the two air fluorescence detectors of the High Resolution Fly's Eye experiment operating in monocular mode. We describe the detector, PMT and atmospheric calibrations, and the analysis techniques for the two detectors. We fit the spectrum to models describing galactic and extragalactic sources. Our measured spectrum gives an observation of a feature known as the ``ankle'' near 3×10183\times 10^{18} eV, and strong evidence for a suppression near 6×10196\times 10^{19} eV.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures.
