The strength of the radial-breathing mode in single-walled carbon nanotubes
We show by ab initio calculations that the electron-phonon coupling matrix
element M of the radial breathing mode in single-walled carbon nanotubes
depends strongly on tube chirality. For nanotubes of the same diameter the
coupling strength |M|^2 is up to one order of magnitude stronger for zig-zag
than for armchair tubes. For (n,m) tubes M depends on the value of (n-m) mod 3,
which allows to discriminate semiconducting nano tubes with similar diameter by
their Raman scattering intensity. We show measured resonance Raman profiles of
the radial breathing mode which support our theoretical predictions
Pure-state quantum trajectories for general non-Markovian systems do not exist
Since the first derivation of non-Markovian stochastic Schr\"odinger
equations, their interpretation has been contentious. In a recent Letter [Phys.
Rev. Lett. 100, 080401 (2008)], Di\'osi claimed to prove that they generate
"true single system trajectories [conditioned on] continuous measurement". In
this Letter we show that his proof is fundamentally flawed: the solution to his
non-Markovian stochastic Schr\"odinger equation at any particular time can be
interpreted as a conditioned state, but joining up these solutions as a
trajectory creates a fiction.Comment: 4 page
Discrimination of the Healthy and Sick Cardiac Autonomic Nervous System by a New Wavelet Analysis of Heartbeat Intervals
We demonstrate that it is possible to distinguish with a complete certainty
between healthy subjects and patients with various dysfunctions of the cardiac
nervous system by way of multiresolutional wavelet transform of RR intervals.
We repeated the study of Thurner et al on different ensemble of subjects. We
show that reconstructed series using a filter which discards wavelet
coefficients related with higher scales enables one to classify individuals for
which the method otherwise is inconclusive. We suggest a delimiting diagnostic
value of the standard deviation of the filtered, reconstructed RR interval time
series in the range of (for the above mentioned filter), below

Expression and autoregulation of transforming growth factor beta receptor mRNA in small-cell lung cancer cell lines.
In small-cell lung cancer cell lines resistance to growth inhibition by transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta 1, was previously shown to correlate with lack of TGF-beta receptor I (RI) and II (RII) proteins. To further investigate the role of these receptors, the expression of mRNA for RI, RII and beta-glycan (RIII) was examined. The results showed that loss of RII mRNA correlated with TGF-beta 1 resistance. In contrast, RI-and beta-glycan mRNA was expressed by all cell lines, including those lacking expression of these proteins. According to Southern blot analysis, the loss of type II mRNA was not due to gross structural changes in the gene. The effect of TGF-beta 1 on expression of TGF-beta receptor mRNA (receptor autoregulation) was examined by quantitative Northern blotting in four cell lines with different expression of TGF-beta receptor proteins. In two cell lines expressing all three TGF-beta receptor proteins beta-glycan mRNA was rapidly down-regulated and this effect was sustained throughout the 24 h observation period. RI and RII mRNAs were slightly increased 24 h after treatment. In one cell line sensitive to growth inhibition by TGF-beta, 1 but lacking beta-glycan expression, and one cell line expressing only beta-glycan and thus TGF-beta 1 -resistant, no autoregulation of mRNA of either TGF-beta receptor was demonstrated. The results suggest that TGF-beta 1 regulates the expression of its receptors, in particular beta-glycan, and that this effect is dependent on co-expression of beta-glycan, RI and RII
Toward an Energy Efficient Language and Compiler for (Partially) Reversible Algorithms
We introduce a new programming language for expressing reversibility,
Energy-Efficient Language (Eel), geared toward algorithm design and
implementation. Eel is the first language to take advantage of a partially
reversible computation model, where programs can be composed of both reversible
and irreversible operations. In this model, irreversible operations cost energy
for every bit of information created or destroyed. To handle programs of
varying degrees of reversibility, Eel supports a log stack to automatically
trade energy costs for space costs, and introduces many powerful control logic
operators including protected conditional, general conditional, protected
loops, and general loops. In this paper, we present the design and compiler for
the three language levels of Eel along with an interpreter to simulate and

BioConcens: Biomass and bioenergy production agriculture – consequences for soil fertility, environment, spread of animal parasites and socio-economy
The research programme called “international research cooperation and organic integrity” was commenced for a period 2006-2010. It is coordinated by DARCOF (The Danish Research Centre for Organic Farming). The whole programme, with acronym DARCOF III, consists of 15 projects (http://www.darcof.dk/research/darcofiii/index.html). One of them is BIOCONCENS - Biomass and bioenergy production in organic farming – consequences for soil fertility, environment, spread of animal parasites and socio-economy (http://www.bioconcens.elr.dk/uk/). The production of bioenergy in organic agriculture (OA) can reduce its dependency of fossil fuels and decrease green house gasses emission; consequently it will increase sustainability of organic farms. Biorefinery concept based on co-production of biogas, bioethanol and protein fodder in organic farming will be developed within the BIOCONCENS project and the background for the project and the different work packages will be presented in this paper
