Boss Mom: Why Texas Should Revise Its Legislation to Allow Gestational Surrogacy Contract Enforcement for Social Surrogacies

Career-driven women have consistently been forced to choose between their careers and creating a family. However, with the use of reproductive technology, this is no longer necessary. In recent years, fertile women have been looking to gestational surrogacy as a pregnancy alternative. These women are opting to use surrogates not be- cause they cannot bear a child but because being pregnant is not feasible for their careers. These surrogacies have been termed “social surrogacies.” However, surrogacy laws throughout the United States are diverse and complicated, and many do not allow for the enforcement of social surrogacy contracts. These states, particularly Texas, require that the intended mother be unable to bear a pregnancy without risk to herself or her fetus in order to have a legally enforceable gestational agreement. This Comment discusses the various surrogacy laws throughout the United States and analyzes the trend toward surrogacy acceptance. Specifically, this Comment argues that these surrogacy laws are unconstitutional and do not further any public policy goals by implementing a medical need requirement for intended parents. Thus, this Comment argues that Texas legislators should revise Texas’s surrogacy statutes and eliminate the medical need requirement, which in turn would allow enforcement of gestational surrogacy agreements for social surrogacies

Blending emerging technologies with the creative arts helped our faculty create a rich learning environment that combines the best features of traditional face-to-face and online teaching. Once technology was seen as a normal part of the learning process, ed-tech buzzwords lost relevance, students were simply learning. The roles of attachment and resilience in perceived stress in medical students

Background: Medical students are susceptible to high levels of psychological stress, while being equipped with lower levels of resilience, especially females. Adult attachment is a known risk factor for a broad range of mental health difficulties and poor coping. The purpose of this study is to examine relationship attachment style, perceived stress, and resilience in medical students.Methods: Data was collected via an online survey using self-report measures from University of Saskatchewan undergraduate medical students (n = 188). Attachment was assessed with the Relationship Questionnaire and Experiences in Close Relationships Scale. Resilience and stress were assessed with the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale and Perceived Stress Scale, respectively.Results: Approximately half of our sample endorsed secure attachment style (49.4%). Females reported significantly more attachment insecurity, higher attachment anxiety, higher perceived stress, and lower resilience compared to males, as expected. As predicted, attachment anxiety and avoidance were predictors of perceived stress. Mediation analyses supported the hypothesis that resilience acted as a partial mediator between attachment insecurity and perceived stress.Conclusion: These findings suggest attachment plays a role in perceived stress in medical students. In addition, the role of resiliency in protecting against this effect highlights potential areas for intervention to improve medical student well-being and provides a foundation for longitudinal follow-up.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal diversity and natural enemies promote coexistence of tropical tree species

Negative population feedbacks mediated by natural enemies can promote species coexistence at the community scale through disproportionate mortality of numerically dominant (common) tree species. Simultaneously, associations with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can result in positive effects on tree populations. Coupling data on seedling foliar damage from herbivores and pathogens and DNA sequencing of soil AMF diversity, we assessed the effects of these factors on tree seedling mortality at local (1 m2) and community (16 ha plot) scales in a tropical rainforest in Puerto Rico. At the local scale, AMF diversity in soil counteracted negative effects from foliar damage on seedling mortality. At the community scale, mortality of seedlings of common tree species increased with foliar damage while rare tree species benefited from soil AMF diversity. Together, the effects of foliar damage and soil AMF diversity on seedling mortality might foster tree species coexistence in this forest
