Marangoni bubble motion in zero gravity
It was shown experimentally that the Marangoni phenomenon is a primary mechanism for the movement of a gas bubble in a nonisothermal liquid in a low gravity environment. A mathematical model consisting of the Navier-Stokes and thermal energy equations, together with the appropriate boundary conditions for both media, is presented. Parameter perturbation theory is used to solve this boundary value problem; the expansion parameter is the Marangoni number. The zeroth, first, and second order approximations for the velocity, temperature and pressure distributions in the liquid and in the bubble, and the deformation and terminal velocity of the bubble are determined. Experimental zero gravity data for a nitrogen bubble in ethylene glycol, ethanol, and silicone oil subjected to a linear temperature gradient were obtained using the NASA Lewis zero gravity drop tower. Comparison of the zeroth order analytical results for the bubble terminal velocity showed good agreement with the experimental measurements. The first and second order solutions for the bubble deformation and bubble terminal velocity are valid for liquids having Prandtl numbers on the order of one, but there is a lack of appropriate data to test the theory fully
A Morphological Approach to the Pulsed Emission from Soft Gamma Repeaters
We present a geometrical methodology to interpret the periodical light curves
of Soft Gamma Repeaters based on the magnetar model and the numerical
arithmetic of the three-dimensional magnetosphere model for the young pulsars.
The hot plasma released by the star quake is trapped in the magnetosphere and
photons are emitted tangent to the local magnetic field lines. The variety of
radiation morphologies in the burst tails and the persistent stages could be
well explained by the trapped fireballs on different sites inside the closed
field lines. Furthermore, our numerical results suggests that the pulse profile
evolution of SGR 1806-20 during the 27 December 2004 giant flare is due to a
lateral drift of the emitting region in the magnetosphere.Comment: 7 figures, accepted by Ap

Open cell fire-resistant foam
Candidate polyphosphazene polymers were investigated to develop a fire-resistant, thermally stable and flexible open cell foam. The copolymers were prepared in several mole ratios of the substituent side chains and a (nominal) 40:60 derivative was selected for formulation studies. Synthesis of the polymers involved solution by polymerization of hexachlorophosphazene to soluble high molecular weight poly(dichlorophosphazene), followed by derivatization of the resultant polymer in a normal fashion to give polymers in high yield and high molecular weight. Small amounts of a cure site were incorporated into the polymer for vulcanization purposes. The poly(aryloxyphosphazenes) exhibited good thermal stability and the first polymer mentioned above exhibited the best thermal behavior of all the candidate polymers studied
