Librarian and Faculty Collaborative Instruction: A Phenomenological Self-Study

Several models of librarian and faculty collaboration are found in the professional librarian literature. The literature on collaborative self-study research in higher education settings indicates collaborative self-study research can improve interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches to teaching and research and facilitate the transfer of knowledge. A research librarian and assistant professor of special education conducted a phenomenological self-study to examine their multiple roles as researchers, collaborators, and educators who collaborated to develop, implement, and evaluate distance-delivered instructional services for public school teachers who live and work in remote, rural, and Native communities throughout the state of Alaska. Several themes emerged from this study, including: (a) the authors’ interdisciplinary and collaborative efforts resulted in increased opportunities to team teach and conduct future collaborative research; (b) the authors struggled to communicate effectively with students via audio-conference; and (c) the beliefs and practices of both authors were transformed by their participation in this self-study. The study suggests implications for further and improved interdisciplinary collaboration between librarians and faculty. The authors believe this collaborative approach to self-study research facilitates reflective and authentic teaching and research for academic librarians working in collaboration with teaching faculty.Ye

A Conjoint Analysis of Public Preferences for Agricultural Land Preservation

Public preferences for the nonmarket services of permanently preserved agricultural land are measured and compared using conjoint analysis. The results from a survey of 199 Delawareans suggest environmental and nonmarket-agricultural services are the most important preserved-land attributes. Results also suggest that open space associated with wetlands on farms is neither an amenity nor a disamenity. On the margin, preserved parcels with agricultural and environmental attributes provide net benefits, which may exceed $1,000,000 for a 1,000-acre parcel. Visualization of toner ink adsorption at bubble surfaces

Flotation deinking involves interactions between inks particles and bubbles surfaces. These interactions are very difficult to observe directly or to quantify in bench-scale experiments or mill operations, making it difficult to evaluate effects of process conditions such as bubble size and solution chemistry on deinking efficiency. This paper presents images and measurements of toner ink interactions with bubble surfaces in laboratory-scale flotation processes. Stable adsorption of toner ink was observed at surfaces of stationary and suspended bubbles for several system chemistries. Interactions of toner particles and bubbles were quantified by high magnification and high temporal resolution digital videos obtained in bubble flow facilities creating both stationary and flowing bubbles. Large (>200 micron), flat toner particles adsorbed to bubble surfaces by single contact points. Smaller toner particles formed very stable complexes in fatty acid chemistries. Desorption of toner ink from bubble surfaces was not observed, even for vigorous flows. Bubbles were observed to be fully covered with toner after 4 minutes of residence time in the suspending bubble flow facility. While we commonly ask alums to judge at tournaments or maybe even speak at a year-end banquet they don’t get many opportunities to address the entire forensics community. Through our “Alumni Challenges” Speaker & Gavel offers our alumni an opportunity to speak to the forensic community.
